On December 21st, 2013, a very large icestorm struck Ontario. By the morining of the 22nd, hundreds of thousands were without power.

I was one of those. 55+ hours later, power was restored and I took pictures in my backyard. The icestorm sucked, but it was very pretty

There is a blackout happening right now in the city. The west end is pitch black, except for my building, which apparently still has power.

Written in the twelfth century by Jayadeva, a Bengali poet , the Gita Govinda, or Song of Govind, is an erotic poem with an underlying theme of bhakti (devotion to and love for God). The poet celebrates the passionate physical love between Radha and Krishna, but their exploits can also be understood as allegories representing the tortuous path of the individual's quest for union with the Unlimited. The poem consists of dramatic lyrics intended to be sung with specified ragas or raginis (musical scales). This painting and its companion to the left are numbers 24 and 22 from the same set. The text illustrated by this painting is written on the back of each in Sanskrit.Krishna's messenger persuades Radha to come to Krishna's bower. The poetry is to be sung to Gujari Ragini.Seeing Radha in her retreat of vines,Powerless to leave, impassioned too long,Her friend described her stateWhile Krishna lay helpless with love.In her loneliness she sees you everywhereDrinking springflower honey from other lips. Lord Hari, Radha suffers in her retreat.Rushing in her haste to meet you,She stumbles after a few steps and falls. Lord Hari, Radha suffers in her retreat.Weaving bracelets from supple lotus shootsAs symbols of your skillful love, she keps alive. Lord Hari, Radha suffers in her retreat.Staring at her ornaments' natural grace,She fancies, I am Krishna, Madhu's foe. Lord Hari, Radha suffers in her retreat. Two lovers meeting in darknessEmbrace and kissAnd claw as desire risesTo dizzying heights of love. When familiar voices reveal That they ventured into the darkTo betray each other,The mood is mixed with shame. As you cast your frightened glanceOn the dark path,As you stop at every tree,Measuring your steps slowly,As you secretly moveWith love surging through your limbs.Krishna is watching you, Radha!Let him celebrate your coming!"""

#darkTO is the Twitter hashtag for power outages in Toronto. Yes, Toronto has had a few but never for this long (~90 hours and counting, less for the lucky ones) and not when temps are plummeting well below zero. The pre-Christmas ice storm broke trees and downed power lines. House interiors are frozen, their water lines drained, their shivering denizens fleeing to warm refuges at community centres or friends and family.

Toronto got a rare white Christmas (look at that prayed-for snow falling thickly!), but a powerless one where over 170,000 people want a hydro crew in their neighbourhood more than Santa down their chimney. Some who got their power back lost it again on Christmas Day. Full restoration has no firm ETA. And our Mayor, the redoubtable Rob Ford, declares it an inconvenience not an emergency. Oh Toronto!

CEO of Toronto Hydro Anthony Haines becomes emotional as he tears up while thanking ALL Toronto and Visiting Power Workers for their hard work. At FINAL Ice Storm 2013 update, 8 a.m. in Members Lounge, Toronto City Hall.

"Been a long haul over the last 12 hours," Haines said. Employees are removing brush using spikes on shoes, climbing poles.

Haines said anyone with power out can call 416-542-8000

Haines said there might be a breaker inside the home that is causing the power not to get through.

Haines tears up a bit. "We'd like to thank our employees who worked around the clock. We're very tired."

"It's a relief. We're very proud of everyone." Lots of people from Manitoba going home tonight, Haines said. Hydro One still helping.

Backyard construction is where wires are going down over fences. Makes big heavy equipment access tedious.

"Toronto Hydro wants to work with The Canadian Electric Association for post-mortem and perhaps another group from Florida.
