Vibes.

For about five miles past Dapp, the Westlock Subdivision is paralleled by backroads. This made it quite easy to not only catch up to the head end but also pace them for a while. Although the temperatures were hovering around the -30°C range, I couldn't pass up grabbing a few exposures out the window.

With a variety pack leading 418 and a good day for chasing trains ahead, I made the trip to Dapp, Alberta to find them. Upon arrival, the fresh snow was completely untouched, and I spent a good while trudging through the waist-deep snow trying to find a good angle to shoot the relatively new, 67-year-old grain elevator. In the end, me and Easton decided the road was still the best shot, and soon, 418's headlight appeared down the line right as the morning sun broke through the clouds.

I was setting out early on February 4, 2024 to see what CN had to offer running around Edmonton that would be of interest. I got word from a friend that 418 was heading south on the Westlock Sub with BCOL 4649 on point, I was first able to intercept 418 here at Dapp, AB.

Still frozen from the pacing action near Dapp, I ventured down to a crossing south of Westlock where I often see trackside wildlife. At first, I didn't see any, until something caught my eye. While it wasn't the wildlife I was looking for, an unlucky moose is what I ended up shooting, with its scavenged remains still sitting beside the railroad where it met its fate. Turns out, things could always be worse than frozen fingers!

First Day of Summer - 21 June 2020

After catching BC Rail 4653 leading A419 through Flatbush, and BC Rail 4646 leading A418 through Dapp, I stopped at this iconic spot just north of Westlock, Alberta, where the old Northern Alberta Railway telegraph lines steal the show. Although the whole subdivision is lined with them, this particular stretch is always my favourite.
