Looking down into Dante's inferno as viscous fragments of lava, some the the size of refrigerators, are are thrown up towards the crater rim. Mt Tanna. Vanuatu.

The northbound deadhead Santa Train passes the classic Clinchfield era signals at Dante en route to Shelby, KY for the following days Santa run.
Deep in the hollers of Southwestern Virginia, cool mountain air and heavy fog set the scene as CSXT 544 South awakes the small mining community of Dante just before sunrise.
Seen here splitting the signals at N.E. Dante, C406-20 fights wet rail and the steep 1.8% descent down Sandy Ridge with 14,730 tons of coal for the Cliffside Steam Plant in Brice, Nc.
With word getting out that the Kingsport Subdivision is soon to be receving more signal upgrades, You can’t help but wonder how many battles with gravity the US&S P-5’s here will get to see.

. . . Could this be the Dante's Ninth Circle of Hell or is it just a normal everyday scene inside Norris Geyser basin in Yellowstone NP?
I did not see any rejected souls here but it was cool to imagine seeing things here, and watch the steam rise on a cold winter's day.

One couldn’t ask for a more beautiful afternoon in coal country as L201-26 descends the 1.8% Sandy Ridge grade through Dante, Va with a block of Eastman traffic.
Looking down into Death Valley, near Badwater Basin, from Dante's View on Black Mountain. From this elevation the salt water flowing slowly through the basin can be seen, as well as a small pond. Standing at ground level none of this was visible.
The long lost ancient sea that deposited all the sediment and salt appears to be roiling again.
