Love it or hate it, maar als autofanaat kan het je niet ontgaan zijn. Twee weken terug deed 's werelds bekendste rally onze hoofdstad Amsterdam aan: de Gumball 3000. 's Avonds besloot ik toch maar richting het Leidseplein te reizen en daar kreeg ik geen spijt van. Wat een gekkenhuis. Complete chaos. Bizar. Verkeersregels werden compleet aan de laars gelapt en de politie was haast niet (zichtbaar) te bekennen. De Gumball was gearriveerd.
Startpunt dit jaar was een paar dagen eerder in Edinburgh. Vanaf daar reden de deelnemers in hun peperdure bolides via Londen, Brugge, Amsterdam, de Zwitserse Alpen, Venetië, Ljubljana, Boedapest en Split naar de eindbestemming Porto Montenegro.
De man die hier in de deuropening van een rijdende Aventador staat is Damon Fryer, de Canadese oprichter van het YouTube-kanaal DailyDrivenExotics (DDE). Nu moet ik eerlijk bekennen nog nooit een video van hem gezien te hebben, maar 3,65 miljoen andere mensen zijn wel fan (en abonnee). Ook op Instagram doet Damon het aardig goed met ruim één miljoen volgers. De enorme menigte in Amsterdam rende er als een kip zonder kop achteraan. Besef even dat er niks afgesloten was voor dit evenement en dit op de doorgaande weg was, waar ook gewoon de rest van het verkeer, de trams en alle scooters en fietsers zich doorheen wurmden. Zoals ik al zei, gekkenhuis! Maar wel enorm gaaf om mee te maken.
Correctie: deze man blijkt niet Damon Fryer te zijn (hij zat achter het stuur), maar zijn bijrijder David Coulter.

Love it or hate it, but as a car fanatic you can't have missed it. Two weeks ago, the world's most famous rally visited our capital Amsterdam: the Gumball 3000. In the evening I decided to travel to Leidseplein and I didn't regret it. What a madhouse. Full chaos. Bizarre. Traffic rules were completely ignored and the police were hardly (visible) to be seen. The Gumball had arrived.
This year's starting point was a few days earlier in Edinburgh. From there, the participants drove their very expensive cars via London, Bruges, Amsterdam, the Swiss Alps, Venice, Ljubljana, Budapest and Split to the final destination Porto Montenegro.
The man standing in the doorway of a moving Aventador is Damon Fryer, the Canadian founder of the DailyDrivenExotics (DDE) YouTube channel. Now I have to admit that I never seen a video of him, but 3.65 million other people are fan (and subscribers). Damon is also doing pretty well on Instagram with over one million followers. The huge crowd in Amsterdam ran after it like a headless chicken. Realize that no roads were closed for this event and that this was on the main road, where the rest of the traffic, trams and all scooters and cyclists squeezed through. Like I said, madhouse! But very cool to see in real life.
Correction: this man turns out not to be Damon Fryer (he was behind the wheel), but his co-driver David Coulter.
