Moving to Kochi
I read all kinds of websites and got advice from people on what to do to prepare to move. In the craziness of moving and preparing to leave, I did not follow most of the advice I should have (or we should have). One thing I wish I had done was assure I knew the inventory that was leaving the house better than I did. There were last minute problems, after the stuff had left US and on it's way to India. Even, in fact once it reached India we realized that the inventory sheet made up by the moving company was missing a most important item (or items) - our two bikes. Of course the inventory sheet does not account for each piece of paper, but in general accounts for the bigger items or the more expensive and bulky stuff. Because the bikes were packed at the last day by the hurried workers in US who just wanted to get home, this was left off the inventory list. Fortunately, we realized it before it was too late and got it added. Well really it was too late, but the movers added it after we sent them photos of our bikes.
The moving company creates an inventory list on carbon papers. This is a very old fashioned method because we have to rely on the handwriting being legible and also the customer gets the bottom copy which is not clear. They should have it on a hand held device that can later be printed and signed off by the movers and the client. In fact, the moving company should not do this in haste. We felt it was all done in haste with us. Yes, they may do this work day in and day out but each client is unique and for many clients, like us, this was our first move and first time to use a shipping company. We were nervous and in hindight we were rushed through the process. Of course we also could have taken a different approach, but in the craziness of moving and the amount of money a client pays for this, the moving company should provide better more individualized service.

Moving to Kochi
There are no scanners like in the airport, as that would dramatically change this process, I suppose. They a team of like three men open up each and every box looking mostly for electronics. They did ask about other things that were new and pricey- furniture and appliances, etc. We did not have new furniture or new appliances. Since there is a voltage difference between US and India we did not bring a majority or electronic gadgets. One doesn't realize how many electronic gadgets one uses until you have to rid them or check their voltage! Though we have bought some small appliances, we did not bring most things including blenders, mixers, toasters, toaster ovens, microwave oven, washing machine and dryer, hair dryers, and one of our most prized possessions- well Krishna's a fancy iron! Essentially we ended up paying duty on a few items- DVD (not new) and TV (Vizio, new).
I think if there was a better way of taking inventory and the boxes were better and more clearly marked, the process may have been easier. Not really sure.

How come somethings are over wrapped and some are carelessly unwrapped? What a good question! Packing things in Rochester, New York was a three day affair, about 8 hours per day. Each of the three days a team of 3-6 men were in the house wrapping and packing things. But the last day, with all the coordination that could be done, they wanted to hurry and get 'the heck home' I guess and the last bits of things from our 'tv room' and garage were not packed in the house (at the site). We were told they would be packed at the warehouse. They bought the wrong truck to our house in US and had to repack the truck anyhow so they claimed in the repacking of the truck they would pack up the things that had not been packed at the house. All a bunch of hot air, because as you can see those last things were not wrapped and packed. That wooden stand was the tv stand and the orange handle you see there is a handle of a set of electric gardening tools. There were many other such things that were unpacked; as you will see in other photos- ladders, yard equipment and our bikes. All yet to be inspected for damage. Doesn't leave you with an easy feeling.
I don't really have an easy tip on how to prevent these things. Seems it's up to the whims and fancies of the movers (packers) of the moving company that is selected. With the 100 years of experience those 6 guys had, it surely doesn't show here!

Moving to Kochi
How things are piled and 'packed' doesn't make it easy to 'find anything'... and they do want you to find things especially that they want you to pay duty on! The workers can come through and sift through the things and haphazardly throw your boxes unless you tell them otherwise. They will say 'We do this all the time and it's no big deal. Nothing happens.'
This is a nice and pacifying remark! These are our valuables and others paw through them. Of course it is their job and they do it day in and out so I am sure there is some truth to what they say but it still doesn't make me feel good! This remark doesn't quite live up to the amazing remark made by our movers in Rochester, NY. When the team of five started haphazardly putting our stuff in the truck at the last minute and not caring for what is where especially when these items are all mixed matched like bikes, gardening tools, ladders (as this one you see in this photo), a TV, a Wii fit, and a futon that needed to be dismantled (hope we can find the parts to reassmble it!) and Krishna asked them to 'be careful', they said, "Don't worry between the five of us we have 100 years experience. We know what we are doing!" Now if that that isn't the most crazy thing to hear at a time like this, I don't know what is!! (Hearing this remark then in this context made me realize how it doesn't make any sense at all!).

The boxes continue like a sea and things as you can see are piled haphazardly. The condition is not at all suitable for a relaxing time. This coupled with the high temperatures, stuffiness of the place in general and the stress of the process = not a good time!!

The company is engaged in delivery and customs clearance of goods from China and Korea. We made a site. Through the administrative interface, you can not only manage the content, but also on request to inform the customers about the status of the consignment.
Moving to Kochi
When entering the warehouse we were surprised to find out they knew where our stuff was! There is no clear maker or boundary around each person's stuff. We could of course tell which is our stuff by the moving company's boxes and the logos on them. We also found out that some items are tagged with stickers. (Hopefully those stickers will come of and not leave anything behind on our furniture!). Anyhow, these are all the risks one has to take while moving abroad, especially for a permanent move and with your stuff! I kept trying to tell myself, "Everything will be OK." This was my mantra, yet going through it at the time is very stressful and overwhelming. This is our first experience moving abroad like this and don't know what it's like to move into other countries or other parts of India- if this is a typical scenerio or anything different than what happens at other ports around the world.
