AMD switched to the LGA (Land Grid Array) socket with its AM5 platform to accommodate the increased performance demands of modern CPUs, which require more pins for faster data transfer and higher power delivery. This is because LGA sockets allow for a higher pin density in a smaller space, making them more suitable for the growing number of connections on modern processors compared to AMD's previous PGA (Pin Grid Array) system where pins were on the CPU itself.

Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM): The AM5 socket uses a clamp and lever system to hold the CPU in place during installation. A lever is used to open and close the socket, securing the processor.
