The theme of the 30th Afri Famine Walk in Co Mayo (Doolough to Louisburgh) on 20th May 2017 was “From hunger and war...to a home and a welcome?” linking Ireland’s experience of forced migration with the ‘welcome’ received by refugees today, and particularly calling for an end to the cruelty of the Direct Provision system in Ireland.
In addition to the speakers who were Joe Murray of Afri, Danny Cusack, and Donnah Vuma, music was provided by Joe Black.
There was also the launch of an 18-track CD, “Music from a dark lake”, ‘a collection of music and song remembering An Gorta Mór’, including some pieces specifically created for the Afri Famine Walk commemoration of the original 1849 Louisburgh-Delphi Lodge-Louisburgh famine walk when starving men, women and children sought assistance and were refused, many dying on the way. www.afri.ie
