“Oh my life! Is it raining again?” The curator peered out of the window at a grey and damp looking Trafalgar Square. We peered with him. A forest of umbrellas raced in all directions across the concourse. “I’m going to turn into a goldfish at this rate!” he continued. “It’s rained every day of the year so far where we come from,” I replied. He asked where. We told him. “But Cornwall’s nice!” he protested. “My wife wanted to go once, and six hours later I was still driving!” We laughed. Not the first time we'd heard this anecdote. Somehow we got onto the price of beer in London. “Go to Spoons,” he insisted. “It’s the only place that’s affordable around here.” This man spoke our language. We already knew there was a “Spoons” just around the corner on Leicester Square. Stuff like that is an essential part of the planning process for a trip like this you see. Walk into a random restaurant and end up with a three figure bill at the end of the meal? Not a chance! How do you think we managed to retire in our fifties? Chicken in a basket and a pint of very agreeable Belgian lager for not much more than a tenner in the centre of London. That's how.
You could quite easily spend a fortune in London. Reportedly one of the most expensive cities in the world, even the most comfortably furnished of wallets would be limp by Friday if you wanted to do the full on London thing. I’m glad if you do, because someone needs to keep the economy churning away nicely. But of course that’s not how Ali and I operate. We were booked into a humble Premier Inn, out by the Excel centre in zone three, away from the two hundred pounds per night equivalents in the city centre. Make proper use of the buffet breakfast and you won’t need to eat again until the early evening. Tap in, tap out on the tube and you’re in amongst the action soon enough. She refuses to buy theatre tickets until she’s hunted down every possible discount, rush notification and ten pound lottery entry. I’m not telling her how much I paid to watch Spurs play Newcastle later that night, but this was the exception to the rule. And of course, there’s that famous chain pub grub operation that our friend had mentioned for a very late lunch or an even earlier supper. Then it’s galleries and museums rather than big wheels and waxworks. Free to enter, and quite frankly more rewarding than many of the attractions you’d need to sell the family jewels to see.
At the moment we were in the National Gallery. I can’t visit the metropolis without coming here at least once to stand spellbound in front of the two hundred year old works of an old master of dodging and burning. There are plenty of magnificent and very famous paintings here of course, but I’ll always head straight for the Turners first. Many are the times when I’ve been out on the clifftops at home in terrible weather and wondered what he would have made of Godrevy Lighthouse, Holywell Bay or Wheal Coates on a wild afternoon. A moody masterpiece no doubt. And while we wandered through the rooms, stopping at the paintings that drew us in, we might grab a phone snap as we passed by, as many others were doing. Apart from some of our friends from Japan who were of course including themselves in front of their chosen artworks. It’s good to see that some things haven’t changed. But however we saw things, we were all gazing into the past, connecting with greatness and seeing through the eyes of men and women who were touched with genius. Without having to hand over a penny for the privilege.
There are lots of galleries and museums in the capital. So many that you can’t possibly see them all in one short visit. And each one has more than enough to hold your attention for hours. Eventually you have to retire, “all cultured out,” to stroll the streets and into the nearest Spoons for a pint that costs considerably less than it does in the supposedly authentic Dog and Duck that serves "genuine" British food on the other side of the road. We've got a chippy in Redruth that serves genuine British food, and it doesn't cost forty quid a head either. All of this is so cost effective that you probably can throw in the odd luxury item along the way, such as going to the Tower where consorts lost their heads and rightful heirs to the throne were imprisoned by their relatives, or taking in the views from the top of the Shard, or front row seats on Shaftesbury Avenue.
At the Tate Modern, standing here looking through the plate glass windows of the sixth floor restaurant, I almost wobbled from my perch of austerity. Ali was somewhere in the building, looking for the Hockneys and a Frida Kahlo that didn’t seem to be present at all, but she has far more patience than me here and I’d had my fill of Modern Art for one afternoon. I held my phone over the QR code at the table, examined the prices and decided that just this once I’d pay eight quid for a pint, only so I could sit and enjoy the view of St Paul’s and the Millennium Bridge. Eight quid very quickly became an almost Scandinavian nine as the online order added a “discretionary” service charge, and I quickly decided that was a pound too far. Nice view though, even if I had to remove a rain smudge or two. The joys of shooting through a sealed window. I’m sure there used to be a balcony somewhere at the top of this gallery.
But if economy is your thing, know that not so long ago, I splashed out an entire five quid to watch Henry the Sixth, Part One, just a few yards from this view at Shakespeare’s Globe, standing in the pit with the other cheapskates while the How Do You Do’s hobnobbed up in the gallery and out of spittle range from the cast. Well I had to choose one of the history plays to have half an idea of what was going on. You can spend big in London for sure, but if that’s really not your thing, you still don’t have to go home.

The Swiss photographer René Burri (*1933, Zurich, † 2014, Zurich) was one of the great photojournalists of the 20th century. From 1955 (full member from 1959) until the end of the 1980s, the photographer, filmmaker and painter was a member of the renowned MAGNUM photo agency and travelled the world on behalf of renowned international magazines. At the centre of the exhibition is his most famous and perhaps most important cycle: "The Germans".

This steampunk luxury building features intricate metal and glass detailing, making it perfect for commercial spaces, nightclubs, speakeasies, museums, and art galleries. The exterior is a rectangular brick structure with a gabled roof, large windows, and a grand arched entrance. First comes the art and the artist's vision. Second comes the gallery, the curator, the purveyor of the exhibition, with his/her interpretation by using the context of the gallery. Third comes the public and the way they consume & interpret the art on display.
Between 5th-7th October, 2007, I asked various visitors to the Oslo Høstutstilling (Oslo's Autumn exhibition - a yearly avant garde arrangement) if they would pose for me in silhouette. Often understated and often the last part of the 'art communication', I decided to make the public at this art exhibition become art itself, not merely relegated to passive movers through the gallery space. These people I called the 'Exhibitionists' - the public on show amidst the exhibits, silent voices, shadows, silhouettes without whom art itself would have no meaning.
A big thanks to all who participated.

The museum's holdings in oriental art include the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. With over 1.79 million visitors in 2022, Wawel Castle is the most visited art museum in the country and the 22nd most visited art museum in the world.

One of Wawel's two artillery towers, Sandomierska Tower was built around 1460 to defend the castle against attack from the south. A small chamber on the third floor would have served as either a guard's lodging or a prison for nobles, whereas common criminals were held in the dungeons.

In his office, cluttered with all kinds of transport memorabilia, this is Gordon Murray, the enthusiastic curator of the Bulawayo Railway Museum. Born in what was then Rhodesia, he has spent a lifetime working on Zimbabwe Railways.

The 2014 Doddington Hall Sculpture Exhibition at Doddington Hall, a Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion complete with walled courtyards and a gabled gatehouse. In Doddington, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire.
The Sculpture Exhibitions are held every two years and feature carefully selected national and international sculptors to complement each area and to provide an eclectic exhibition to suit all tastes, styles and budgets.
Curator David Waghorne arranged the outdoor pieces taking full advantage of the Doddington Hall back drop and the large and varied gardens. Almost every piece on exhibition is for sale.

This SLOA charter on 26th May 1979, 'The Curator', originated at Euston and was Class 86 hauled to Manchester Piccadilly and Class 25 hauled to Guide Bridge. The onward section to York via the Hope Valley was steam hauled by MR Compound No. 1000 & LNER class V2 No. 4771 'Green Arrow'. I have so many happy memories of Ollie, and know that the day will come when they stop making me so sad. This pile of toys still sits in the upstairs hallway. (I could easily believe that Ollie had more toys than any cat ever. Not only did he inherit many from those who came before him, he—just as Teddy did—really delighted in new ones. So when I found one I knew he’d like, I often couldn’t resist buying it.)
Ollie hand (paw:) picked most of this collection, carrying them upstairs himself. On my ‘out of the house’ workday, I’d come home to find the stick-like ones in a trail leading to my desk. He’d often scatter his toys at night, and I’d return them to the pile, again and again. And when he settled on ‘his’ bed each morning for a nap, I liked to give him a favorite (like the shark or banana, or the mousie with tail that didn’t make it in this shot) to bat around, lick or chew. Always just a kitten at heart :-)
