"A Wordless Text, Light on Water"
by Louise LeBourgeois and Steven Carrelli
@louiselebourgeois
@stevencarrellipittore
This drawing was made collaboratively by a remarkable Chicago based artist couple. The drawing brings together their respective practices in a whimsical image that speak (for me) of the tenuous existence of someone like Temma (the indirect subject of all of the works in this project).
This is one of the 23 works in the upcoming enigmatic group exhibition titled "Deposition: Drawn" at North Park University. Opening reception on February 14 (Valentine's Day!) 4:30 - 6:30 and running through March 9.
This exhibition is an unusual mash-up of my work as curator (primarily as gallery director at @npuchicago ) and my work as an artist (particularly work that is related to my most frequent subject, my daughter Temma). I sent each of the participating artists a unique prompt which was for me somehow related to Temma. The participating artists then made a drawing related to their prompt. They also developed an accompanying text / title for the drawing. And then they sent that text to me along with a high resolution scan of their drawing.
Check out Louise's work here:
and Steve's work here:
The Mapmaker’s Song
The mapmaker downed his tools.
I’ve caught it, every alley, every street,
every fanlight and window-ledge,
the city fixed and framed.
Now I want everything else.
I want to be a historian of footsteps,
a cartographer of hemlines and eyelids,
I want to catch what the pavements say
when they sing to each other
in their deep laboratories, plotting
every journey since the place began.
I want the whole
unlosable database, the repeating place,
kings stalking the server farms,
tailbacks and looped alarms,
I want to be where
brushstrokes flicker on a bank of screens,
where graveyards tilt
and quiet populations crowd the air,
their quarters risen again
their furniture
smashing through the floors.
I want to stand at the centre
of a great clutter
mapping ashes, mapping bones,
archivist, enumerator, hanger-on
signing the returns
of an infinite census.
I want to be,
beyond everything I’ve reached or drawn,
not much at all, or all there is,
a geographer of breath,
a curator of hands.
I want to lie in the atrium
of the museum of the fingertip
and touch, touch, touch.

Curator's tour Der Schweizer Fotograf René Burri (*1933, Zürich, † 2014, Zürich) war einer der großen Bildjournalisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. The Swiss photographer René Burri (*1933, Zurich, † 2014, Zurich) was one of the great photojournalists of the 20th century. From 1955 (full member from 1959) until the end of the 1980s, the photographer, filmmaker and painter was a member of the renowned MAGNUM photo agency and travelled the world on behalf of renowned international magazines. At the centre of the exhibition is his most famous and perhaps most important cycle: "The Germans".
Originally, a polyptych was a religious piece on an alter which had four or more hinged panels. Each panel displayed a relief or painting. I've used this artistic technique to create a themed photographic sequence or a group of pictures of a particular part of buildings, monuments etc located in Barnsley.
Each composition consists of photographs taken in Barnsley, a town in South Yorkshire, England.
________
Worsbrough Mill is a complex of buildings including a seventeenth-century water-powered mill and a nineteenth-century steam-powered mill in Worsbrough, Barnsley, England. The mill is open to the public and takes its water from the River Dove.
Worsbrough Mill was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and the first Curator, [Rob Shorland-Ball – 1975 to 1979] researched the history and states that a "tenuous but continuous documentary record can be traced from then to 1625 which is the likely date for the building of the existing Old Mill. Whether the pre-1625 mill(s) were on the same site is not known. However, a mill was a very important part of the feudal pattern of life and settlement and thus tended to remain on the same site if that site was a satisfactory one".

In 2000 Stephen B Whatley had the pleasure and honour of meeting the new curator of the BBC art collection, Justin Phillips, who arranged the acquisition of his painting BBC Television Centre (1994); following the BBC's acquisition of his paintings of BBC Broadcasting House and Bush House (both painted on location in London1992) . On delivery of the painting to BBC Broadcasting House, Justin kindly gave Stephen a tour of the building; including showing him his painting hanging in the then Director-General, Greg Dyke's office. He then said that the BBC would like to commission him to paint two interiors within the BBC the following year.
Justin Phillips , a man of great heart and faith, suddenly died tragically the day after Christmas 2000 - a shock to all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In 2001, Justin's widow Gill contacted Stephen explaining that she would like to commission a painting of Justin's childhood home in Ealing, West London, UK; in his memory through their mutual admiration of the artist's work.
That year, Stephen was back at the BBC painting two interiors, one of the BBC Radio Theatre; the other of The Top Of The Pops Studio at BBC Television Centre - during filming. Just as Justin Phillips had proposed.
This photograph shows Stephen painting Gill Phillip's commission, from their family garden in West London, during an unusually hot April 2002.

With her extravagant aesthetic, the multidisciplinary artist Sasha Frolova not only created flashy inflatable latex costumes for the Grand Show, "FALLING IN LOVE" and its curator JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER, but also created breathtaking wow moments with fantastic scenographic design elements for the stage. She creates inflatable costumes and sculptures out of latex and other materials.
In 2009 she was a finalist at the Kandisky Prize in the "Young Artist. Project of the Year" category.
In 2013 she was a finalist at the ARTE LAGUNA 12.13 Prize and won a special prize in the "Personal Exhibition" category.
A year later she received the prize as "Alternative Miss World 2014".

"For Ben Russell, the Science Museum’s Doctor Who-like curator of mechanical engineering, robots are nothing like the existential menace they have been cracked up to be. They are magic tricks. They are ingeniously contrived fragments of the human mind and body, but nowhere close to mastering the fine motor skills or mental adaptability of a five-year-old. And their role in our society has barely changed in 500 years." - The Times, Feb 7 2017

Olivia (stranger 6).
Olivia is doing an internship with the curator of a gallery and she was lucky enough to be able to work during the Haute Photography in Rotterdam. Then you don't have to sit in the office in a boring way and she could welcome the visitors during the exhibition and give them an explanation. She asked if I knew the work of the photographer Gemmy Woud. She pointed out to me the details in the photos and the recurring theme in the exhibited works. As we talked, I noticed the similarity between the color of Olivia's eyes and the color of the picture hanging behind her. Of course I was allowed to take a picture of Olivia, standing in front of that portrait. At home I edited the photo and converted it to black and white (see photo 2), also beautiful. I still choose the color variant because of the color of Olivia's eyes. Thanks again Olivia.
This is the 6th photo of my 4th round of the 100strangers project. I like doing it, that's why it's already the 4th round.

Wawel Castle's immaculate arcaded Courtyard of great dimensions formed the ideal setting for tournaments and various court events over the centuries. This courtyard is regarded to be the largest and most beautiful Renaissance castle courtyard in Europe. The building surrounding the courtyard are the State Rooms, Royal Private Apartments and the Crown Treasury and Armory and have running three-story cloister, the lowest part are arcaded. In addition, there are carved portals, picturesque exterior stairwells and mural paintings.
The Wawel Royal Castle is a castle residency located in central Kraków, Poland, and the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. Built at the behest of King Casimir III the Great, it consists of a number of structures from different periods situated around the Italian-styled main courtyard. Wikipedia
The castle is part of a fortified architectural complex erected atop a limestone outcrop on the left bank of the Vistula River, at an altitude of 228 metres above sea level. The complex consists of numerous buildings of great historical and national importance, including the Wawel Cathedral where Polish monarchs were crowned and buried. Some of Wawel's oldest stone buildings can be traced back to 970 AD, in addition to the earliest examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Poland.[5][6] The current castle was built in the 14th-century, and expanded over the next hundreds of years. In 1978 Wawel was declared the first World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Centre of Kraków.
For centuries the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, Wawel Castle is now one of the country's premier art museums. Established in 1930, the museum encompasses ten curatorial departments responsible for collections of paintings, including an important collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, prints, sculpture, textiles, among them the Sigismund II Augustus tapestry collection, goldsmith's work, arms and armor, ceramics, Meissen porcelain, and period furniture. The museum's holdings in oriental art include the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. With seven specialized conservation studios, the museum is also an important center for the conservation of works of art.
Here is the Curator taking a nap at the museum in Naples, Italy. I couldn't pass taking this shot. I woke him up after I took this:) View in lightbox.
The curators of the British Museum, claim that the stolen marbles belong to the institution they run... Do they afraid that by returning the Parthenon treasures back, there where they belong, they will be jobless...??? All the artifacts excibited in British Museum are stolen from other countries with great heritage and history....

I have so many happy memories of Ollie, and know that the day will come when they stop making me so sad. This pile of toys still sits in the upstairs hallway. (I could easily believe that Ollie had more toys than any cat ever. Not only did he inherit many from those who came before him, he—just as Teddy did—really delighted in new ones. So when I found one I knew he’d like, I often couldn’t resist buying it.)
Ollie hand (paw:) picked most of this collection, carrying them upstairs himself. On my ‘out of the house’ workday, I’d come home to find the stick-like ones in a trail leading to my desk. He’d often scatter his toys at night, and I’d return them to the pile, again and again. And when he settled on ‘his’ bed each morning for a nap, I liked to give him a favorite (like the shark or banana, or the mousie with tail that didn’t make it in this shot) to bat around, lick or chew. Always just a kitten at heart :-)
At the moment in the main hall of our gallery the amazing exhibition 'Nightmare' by HeLa Lennie.

Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) Greedy feckers. There's a around 10 of em visit my garden, usually 4-5 at a time, the neighbours must think I've took up Pigeon Racing.
Wood Pigeon Eyes ????? They seem to have an irregular shape to the pupil of the eye. Is it known if there is a beneficial or other reason for this?
Hein van Grouw, Senior Curator, Bird Group at the Natural History Museum says,
"Wood pigeons seem to have non-circular pupils. The pupil, however is circular but due to a spot of dark pigment in the iris the pupil seems to be non-circular. I have no idea what the reason (advantage) is for this. What I do know is that several other (tropical) species, mainly Fruit Doves, have it too."
A pigeon's field of vision is even greater than a horse's, nearly 360 degrees, with a very narrow binocular portion in front. It processes what it sees faster than we can. Like horses, pigeons are very sensitive to any movement.
So though it might seem like birds with eyes on the side of their heads can’t see where they are going, they can see forward and sideways at the same time, and in fact can see much more than those with eyes facing forwards.
What is most familiar with the pigeon, though, is its cooing sound, which is somewhat distinct from other birds in the garden. In fact, there are just five notes in total, and they go like this: “ru-hoo ru ru-hoo.” Try counting the sounds next time you hear a Wood pigeon in your garden.
Another interesting feature about Wood pigeons is their size. They often come across as slightly overweight, and one consequence of their size is the manner in which they walk. It isn’t straight, but a waddle, which gives the impression that they possess over-sized bottoms. This isn’t the case, of course, and it is a fact that the total weight of all the feathers combined is greater in weight than the entire skeleton.
Wood pigeons prefer the privacy of wooded areas for nesting and producing young. Never do female Wood pigeons lay more than two eggs per clutch, although should those eggs be destroyed, eaten or stolen, further clutches will be produced within a season, allowing successive generations to continue the family line.
The nest itself is built by both mother and father, and is a co-ordinated mass of twigs located in either a tree or high up on a building. The eggs are incredibly smooth, glossy white and have a width and length of 30mm x 41mm.
