A big thank you to Bruce Lawson (seen here explaining he's mislaid the html5 spec) & Henny Swan, for sending me a very nice Moleskin notebook and even a High Standards t-shirt! (For my work on the first standards.next design.)

Incidentally, Standards.next is still looking for a new design, highlighting amongst others canvas & svg, instead of just css3 like mine did.

So attentive, even after a good 1and a half hours.

Well done John for keeping them interested.

No one in the second room. I'm sure it'll come to good use seeing that we can now do the event 'DUAL SCREEN'

including kinda old obsolete-ish references.. With the idea that the older, more out of date stuff is more out of focus.

Some of it's kinda funny.. cause transcending css is really quite about about structure and the notion of the semantic web.

Some how the semantic web seems to keep coming in and out of focus.. or it's perceived importances seems to fluctuate.. now...

Now, with the rise of this responsive web design business.. the issue type stuff seems to be increasing.

In many ways I feel like we are that this fascinating turning point in the history of the web design discipline..

I mean.. between HTML5, CSS3, and the evolution of web browsers.. and then you have this whole mobile web, and all it's issues... and the sorta impact on SEO issues of site load times... and the implications of that on design...

Well... its getting more complex I guess?

This is an example of using the Advanced Column layout specified in the W3C CSS3 specification.

The areas shaded in gray are specified as being @ (meaning that content not allocated to a position will go here) and then the top middle is labelled a, and then the ones below are labeled b and c going from left to right.

The problem at present with this specification though is that where does content go that is flowing through the boxes labelled @ but runs out of space? Is it truncated? Or is it put somewhere else?

There is also no way of changing the width or the height of the individual boxes making it even more inflexible.

This is a problem I realised and brought up at the recent "Transcending CSS: Modern Techniques For Designing A Beautiful Web" workshop run by Andy Clarke of Stuff and Nonsense. It's one of those things that will have been noticed by someone before no doubt - but one of the many things that the W3C need to be made aware of so they fix it!

Another question I have is whether it's possible to specify which order the @'s get used in.

Article on this will be published on New Earth Online (http://www.newearthonline.co.uk) shortly.
