Too bad I hate tequila. Yep, you heard that right--Texas girl who won't even sniff a Margarita. A story you don't want to know.

had some matrix experiments from a while back--forgot I had made it, of course, and found it in a box today while I was looking for something else.

This matrix has a lot of crystal inclusions, and wasn't certain that it would survive the cure temps; but apparently it does.

Cool beans.

Custom brooch project we did for my cousin Marcella. We took 22k gold

from a cherished family heirloom and turned it into gold granule

"dew-drop" accents on the leaves. We had two steel straight screw-back

pins laser welded onto the back. This pin will be used on my cousin's

leather motorcycle jacket, making a very sturdy ...pin backing necessary.

The opal GLOWS... Mark did an excellent job cutting the opal!

Sterling silver pierced overlay, 22k accents & 22k

bezel set solid Australian crystal opal.

Founded in 1989 by John Bernard, Opal Minded grew out of a family tradition of opal mining. John continues this tradition operating Opal Minded’s own opal mines in Jundah personally.

In ancient times, opals were believed to bring extreme good luck to anyone possession of one.

The best quality opals per carat are more valuable than the best quality diamonds.

This piece is not particularly big, but it sure makes up for it fire. I craved this piece out of the wall very carefully. It turned out to make a good show piece as the opal was very easy to see. I think it was the end of larger piece of opal my sister pulled out.

This is what else you can find at the mines. In all the clay you come across a good bit of wood. The "petrified" wood is rather odd. Its like half way between petrified in plain wood. It flaked and had the same color as modern day wood. Most common woods was Redwood, ginkgo, and cypress. The brown wood in the picture is red wood. The large long piece still has parts where it was burned from the ash of a volcanic eruption.

This piece is rather nice. The vein of opal goes all the way to the other side. Its a combination of black opal, contraluz (clear opal), and various shades of black opal.

October is the opal month. Happy birthday to all whose birth stone is opal.

Looks like rat turd I know. But its a small pine cone where the inside has been replaced with contraluz or opal. I didn't see any fire in this one. Larger examples sell for a good deal of money.

One of the guys we meet while at the mines, craved this very big and long piece of black opal out of the wall. It was one of the best finds we saw the entire time we were there. It is basically a branch from a tree that has opalized. The glassy part at the end is the start of the opal. It was advised to leave opal like this until you took it home and could clean it better. The piece is about 12-14 inches long and about 2-3 wide.

This is a very good picture showing the clay layer (where opal is found) and the puff balls above it. A puff ball was once a flaming ball of ash that deposited above the ground. It served to direct water and minerals to a concentrated spot where opal would form. The water would flow around the sides of the puff ball. If you find one of these there is usually opal below it.

When I saw this picture after I took it, it reminded me of those nebulas in space you see from the Hubble Telescope. Really beautiful.
