Looking back after my short 15 minute visit to Spirit Island, which is right behind on the left. The island is special but it's those peaks that surround it on the southern end that make it iconic.

Following a map obtained from Samson Beaver, Mary explored the valley and lake and later wrote about her adventures, making the area a popular tourist attraction in years to follow. Antarctic cruise aboard Marco Polo. This shot was taken from a Zodiac during one of the excursions. Canon 10D was the first serious digital camera for the layman. This photo still looks great after nearly 2 decades against all the new kids on the block today!

The blue heron settled briefly on one shore, then flew across to where it did the little dance, trying to earn a fish from the fisherman on the dock. Ended up having to do its own fishing.
