The way the light has illuminated the top bud kind of reminds me of one of these human chakra diagrams where the crown chakra of enlightenment - the Sahasrara, is lit up. It is normally depicted with a lotus flower, but I think this one does a nice impression. Perhaps on some level, the fact it has thorns adds rather than detracts.....

It's a bit of a stretch I know, I was tempted to put a star burst onit but managed some self restraint, not bad for an old fool on this day.

Tangara xanthocephala

(Saffron-crowned Tanager / Tángara coronada)

Saffron-crowned Tanager is a brightly colored tanager with a distinctive yellow head. This species occurs through the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia, and occupies humid montane forests and secondary woodlands.

Due to human destruction of habitat, it is hypothesized that the population numbers are decreasing. Like most Tangara tanagers, the Saffron-crowned is sexually monomorphic.

I was at the Botanic Garden with my wife, who was doing an extended bird survey of the Garden with three of her fellow docents. It was a pleasant spring morning weather. This handsome male was preening himself extensively on a branch by the pond, displaying the largest ruby crown that any of us had ever seen (not quite captured in this picture). He was also vocalizing and calling actively now and then.

Early spring arrival to Southern Ontario. These are restless, acrobatic birds that move quickly through foliage, typically at lower and middle levels. They flick their wings almost constantly as they go. This makes them very difficult to photograph. (Cornell Lab)

Well, autumn is almost over, so we're a bit late with our autumn upload. Here are some nicely arranged autumn leaves, just like a crown.

I love these little sweeties with their lovely delicate singing. Never remaining still definitely makes them not easy to photograph.

Thank you for all views, faves, and comments.

Saw this Ruby-crowned kinglet in with a flock of bushtits in a bush next to me. The first I've seen one of these beauties in quite some time!

My last photo from the Berlin government district (which you can find in the first comment) was taken from the Kronprinzenbrücke (Crown Prince Bridge); in that image, you could only see one of the rusty fenders of that bridge; since I'd also uploaded two other images before where you can only see a small part of the Crown Prince Bridge (please check the album, if you like), I thought it's about time to upload a photo of the bridge itself. I have two different versions, taken from both sides of the Spree, which differ quite considerably in their "look and feel", although the bridge itself looks pretty much the same, of course, so it was difficult to choose which I'd upload first. This photo is the more harmonious version because there isn't so much going on in the background – the buildings you can see here are the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (on the left), and the building of the Bundespressekonferenz (Federal Press Conference; on the right) –, while in the other photo of the Crown Prince Bridge which I'd taken four days before this there are the more well-known governmental buildings plus a "slice" of the berlin cube in the background, and there are also nice drama clouds.

So stay tuned for the "drama version" of the Crown Pince Bridge which is even more of a slider than this one; you will see it on one of the future Slider Sundays :)

This final image is an HDR made from exposure bracketing consisting of three single images which I've combined in HDR Efex, and which I've sliderified in Lightroom with the masking tool, and in Color Efex Pro with various filters.

The Crown Prince Bridge was designed by famous Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava. His style is unique and the design of his buildings is so distinctive that I think you will always easily recognize a Calatrava design once you've seen one of his constructions. To me, his constructions often have a distinctive sci-fi touch, and they also remind me of alien or futuristic exoskeletons, but that's probably just me ;) The origins of the Crown Prince Bridge date back to 1709, when a simple wooden bascule bridge, the "Thiergartenbrücke", was erected across the Spree. Much later, from 1877 to 1879, a new wrought-iron bridge was built in the current location, and that bridge was named "Kronprinzenbrücke" in honour of Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (Frederick III) who later was German Emperor for 99 days until his death in 1888. That bridge was heavily damaged in WWII. Since it connected the Berlin boroughs of Tiergarten (West-Berlin) and Mitte (East-Berlin), it was finally torn down in 1961 after the Berlin Wall had been erected. The new Crown Prince Bridge which was opened in 1996 was the first new bridge construction that (re-)connected the former Western and Eastern sectors after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Happy Sliders Sunday, and have a nice week ahead, dear Flickr friends!

The White-crowned Sparrow is a large sparrow with a small bill and a long tail. The head can look distinctly peaked or smooth and flat, depending on the bird’s attitude.

They have a highly audible song for such a small bird. It took several minutes before I could locate him as he sang a few phrases from one place, and then started again in another location. Luckily for me, he flew down to an open perch very close where he sang and raised his crown.

It was a bright overcast backlight situation. I was close enough to get detail though, and I really like the way those red crown feathers were lighted from behind.

If you have never heard its song, Check the link below.

The white-crowned sparrow is a species of passerine bird native to North America. A medium-sized member of the American sparrow family, this species is marked by a grey face and black and white streaking on the upper head.

We had a ton of snow last night... what a wonderful decor we had today but I was so busy, I have not had a chance to look at antyhing I captured,,,, so tired after hours with the birds, walk with the dogs who crazy love the snow (just like myself ) ... and snow shoveling (do not like that part of the deal :)) ... I am just ready to go to bed and it is not even 8:00 pm yet... maybe in the next few days I will process some snow pictures... meanwhile we have our usual greenish / brownish west coast decor :)

Ruby-crowned Kinglets right now in this area are plentiful and singing their energetic, upbeat song. It's always great to see them with their crest showing.

One of only a couple shots I got off this day. We heard a lot more.

Scientists interested in movement and energetics have discovered that White-crowned Sparrows can run on a treadmill at a pace of about one-third of a mile an hour without tiring out. I'd like to know how they got a sparrow to do this???

"A migrating White-crowned Sparrow was once tracked moving 300 miles in a single night. Alaskan White-crowned Sparrows migrate about 2,600 miles to winter in Southern California."
