All elements of this are from photos taken by me.Texture is PS oil and Perfect Effects 4 to finish.For those among you who may be interested the building is at Rhyolite Ghost Town, the truck is in a fabulous museum in Beatty (nr Rhyolite) background moutains are Death Valley and the 'Critters' were in Bryce Canyon.
This very pretty Red-tailed Hawk was hunting rodents from it's perch in a seasonally-bare tree at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge last Friday. It repeatedly dove at critters in the weeds and then returned to this perch. Guess it was happy with it's perch!

Well, I had a long day.....It did not start out great (weather wise). I was finally able to get some hiking in on the Parkway. Here's a little critter I ran into.
This Redtailed Hawk nailed this gray squirrel in my backyard. My wife accidentally spooked the hawk as she came around the corner of the house with the dog. The hawk took off and didn't return to retrieve the squirrel until the next day . After he picked it up he landed on this tree stump and then departed shortly thereafter.

A friend asked me: "After all these Safaris you made, what are you looking for this time? What is it you like to snap this time?"
My answer was: "Honey Badger! We´v seen them often, but I never was able to get a clean shot of one of those guys. They always tend to disappear in the grass only allowing blurry butt shots."
As if someone had listened, luck was on our side and we had this lovely badger in hunting mode for several minutes. The critter never stood still but I was lucky enough to get some nice shots, at least.

I know this is grainy but it was taken from our Stealth Cam. It's amazing what happens when no humans are around!
Yes we have had more rain which means my paddocks resemble lakes rather than grassy yards :( The cats get so used to walking with wet feet they don't even avoid the puddles anymore.

Little mountain chipmunk poses for tourists - Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta, Canada.
I was going through some of the older photos and came across these little critters. Does anyone know what they are? I know I was in the village of Little Washington where there is a really large garden and I think these were probably not a welcome addition to the garden judging by the look of the leaf below them. Happy Sabbath to all, it's a wonderful, beautiful day here today. :)
While in the forest we checked out Fort Critter, it's been abandoned over summer and with all the rain we've been having I think we are in for repairs.....Once home I checked everyone for leeches and just as well I did......
I found this male, white-tailed deer walking through the wooded area of an urban park. Around the same time, there were a couple coyotes in the same area. One walked very close to this guy, but they seemed to ignore each other, acting casually. However, I'm sure they were very aware of what was going on. Couldn't manage a photo of the encounter due to it being deeper into the wooded area and the constant movement of the critters. Oh well, I still have memories.
I don’t like to commit myself about heaven and hell — you see, I have friends in both places.
So i tried a lil challenge to push myself, and who better than My lil sexy Star and my brain pain Parrot to practice on.
Last in the brief series of northern prairie reptiles is the Greater Short-horned Lizard. The only species of lizard found in Saskatchewan and Alberta, it is limited to about ten scattered locations and considered endangered in Canada, mostly due to human intrusion and industrial development (oil and gas). Thankfully, the population in Grasslands Park is fully protected.
I had not seen one for years, so it was very exciting to notice a sudden furtive movement at my feet while walking the rim of a coulee. And there it was!
They're small; this one was about 4 inches in length. Due to its girth, I think it's a female; males are more narrowly built, and tend to be shorter. Once again, I found myself on my belly with the macro lens, trying not to stick myself with nearby cactus thorns, trying to convince a reptile that I was a benign monster and not a predator. Haha, good luck with that! But it did pose nicely for about 100 shots before I left it in peace. Total time spent with this critter (according to EXIF data): 15 minutes.
This is an appropriate day to offer a shot of a lizard, not because it is the 147th anniversary of Custer's well-deserved defeat at the Little Bighorn, but because this morning I am going on a lizard walk with some friends and a local biologist. That's one advantage of living next to a national park: research and conservation projects are ongoing, and I get to meet experts in various scientific disciplines. I might even retain some of the information they so generously share.

These were just tiny figures decorating a corner of someone's front yard, but they looked so cute, I had to take a photo.
After a little hesitation, Critter decided that he really likes playing in the snow and stayed out all day.
Tomorrow, I'll buy him a sled.

The newest member of the outside cat family--this is Critter, he came for dinner once and now he controls the front porch.
