Swans are known for their grace and beauty but they do have a dark side - it’s not all tutus and Tchaikovsky. The first thing we saw upon our arrival at the Abbotsbury Swannery was a really vicious fight between two males competing for the attention of a female. A member of staff told us that when the swans go to war they use their wings to try to beat and drown each other.
This photograph was taken when they were congregating for their evening feed. As you might expect, it wasn't long before tempers started to wear thin (EM120764)
White-backed vultures have a high survival rate. Individual adults have the highest survival rate, while 2 year old birds have the lowest survival rate. Across all ages, the survival rate is estimated to be 90.7%. This means that the deaths of adult vultures will lead to rapid population declines. IUCN

Male western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) named "Frank". Born September 4, 2008 at the San Diego Zoo to Azizi (mom) and Paul Donn (dad), Frank now lives at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Conservation status: Critically Endangered
Indigo Macaws - this is a critically endangered species resident of interior northeastern Brazil. These macaws are metallic blue throughout with a slight green tinge and have yellow on the bare orbital ring and in a semi-circular patch at the base of its lower mandible. These beautiful birds inhabit caatinga thorn scrub vegetation with stands of licurí palm (Syagrus coronata) and pastures near sandstone cliffs which they use for nesting and roosting. Although this species had been known to science through traded birds, a wild population wasn't discovered until 1978. Since then, several smaller populations have been discovered, with a final population estimate of 140 birds being made in 1994. The Indigo Macaw may have never been common, but wide scale clearing or licurí palm stands and hunting for meat and for the pet trade have decimated populations of this bird. Drastic measures are needed to save this bird from following the same path as the similar, and now presumed extinct, Glaucous Macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus). doi.org/10.2173/bow.indmac1.01

Amu Leopard Cub is VERY TOUGH GUY!!!111 RAWR!
Amur Leopards are critically endangered with less than 200 in the world remaining, so it is a joy when two cubs were born at Brookfield Zoo on April 18, 2018.
Today Jilin and Samson came down and were very active - the two cubs playing rambunctiously with each other. Wrestling, tackling, hunting - very fun and cute.

The Trinidad piping guan (Pipile pipile) locally known as the pawi, is a bird in the chachalaca, guan and curassow family Cracidae, endemic to the island of Trinidad. It is a large bird, somewhat resembling a turkey in appearance, and research has shown that its nearest living relative is the blue-throated piping guan from South America. It is a mainly arboreal species feeding mostly on fruit, but also on flowers and leaves. At one time abundant, it has declined in numbers and been extirpated from much of its natural range and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated the bird as "critically endangered". When I run out of energy for human interaction, I go to places like this. To be left alone. I've yet to find someone who knows how to STFU and leave me alone, while still keeping me company. That is an art.

One way to find the CG point ie. Center of Gravity of a vehicle longitudinal axis is to drive it over the edge of a scarp so that the front and rear wheels are in the air while the bottom of the vehicle between the front and rear wheels leans on the ground. If the rear wheels sits on the ground, CG is further to the aft and you may push the vehicle forward. If the vehicle tips over the edge, then CG was closer to the front. Should it so happen, get another vehicle and try again...

The unseasonably warm weather in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States has delayed the peak autumn color change. Despite this, I was able to document some of the change during a trip through Ricketts Glen State Park in rural Pennsylvania, this weekend. Before today this region has had very little rainfall, so the falls are not roaring at their full grandeur, but I was quite pleased with what I was able to capture.
Inside the walls of The Old Joliet Prison is the hospital erected in 1895. I have framed the facade of the building with a broken out glass block window from close by. I'm sure many of the inmates felt they were framed, too. You can see the decay, but you can't smell how bad it was inside that building!!!
Stay well friends. You don't want to have to go to the hospital.
