So, I just discovered free Adobe Stock photos. I didn't think Adobe had anything for free.
For a holiday, it's been pretty quiet around here. No fireworks or load parties. Not complaining
I didn't have a scanner at the time, so I'm guessing this is a DASAF or DALAF rolling into Hearne, TX in December 1988. The fact that I'm hanging out in the cab of the train waiting to depart demonstrates the kindness of the railroaders that worked the SP in Texas.
Behind the 8278 is semi-famous Hearne Depot, which housed a train order office and MoW forces. It has since been preserved and moved across Highway 6.
Leonard, that's Jerry and FM next to the cars parked to the right of the signal.
I almost threw away this file, then I thought I'd see what it looked like with a bit of tilt-shift, and voilĂ ... a whole different shot emerged. A new recent personal best, I think.

Burlington Northern train Nos. 103 and 13 trade crews at Burke, Illinois, on April 7, 1990. Train 103 with GP39M No. 2830 was in the siding at Burke after delays and picking up cars at Eola created some concern that the crew would not make it to the next crew change at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Instead of sending out a new crew to dog catch the train somewhere, a clever solution of exchanging crews was used where No. 103’s crew would trade places with the crew of a higher priority train. In this way, No. 103’s former crew, with fewer hours of service left to them, would step aboard the hotter train and make the crew change point before “going dead on the law.” The hot train’s crew, with more available hours, would slog along with their “new” train, but they too would make the crew change point before going dead. I’m not sure how the crews felt about the situation, but it was a great way to keep the railroad fluid.
A pair of intermodal trains departed Chicago every early afternoon—Nos. 3 and 13—somedays with train 13 shadowing 3 by a block or two. This day was no different as No. 3 pounded past the stopped freight without stopping. The exchange of crews was going to be with No. 13, which came into view only a few minutes later. After making the crew “exchange,” train 13 took off like a bat out of hell with the hours-short crew. Burke siding’s signal blinked from red to yellow to green, and once again No. 103 headed west, albeit not as fast as the trains in front of it. The dispatcher got two hot trains around a slow freight in single-track territory and prevented a crew from dying on the law, all in one well orchestrated move.
It didn't take long to reveal why IAIS 6988 stopped at the depot in Geneseo: crew change! But not just your standard crew change. It seems that none other than Henry Posner III, president and owner of the Iowa Interstate, was at the throttle of 6988 as it began its journey west toward Silvis. It pulled stopped to allow Mr. Posner to get some photos at the depot, and to allow the usual crew to take the helm to continue the rest of the journey. The train wasn't stopped for long, maybe 5-10 minutes, before it would continue on toward Silvis.

An observational capture of a crew I watched as they worked with precision and speed to get the flight ready. Was quite fascinating.
PS: I will catch up with all my friends and their great pictures & posts once I get back home.
Two different forms of transportation momentarily meet as the BHS heads lite to switch Odyssey. The MASSIVE Cargill terminal at the port sets the backdrop for this scene. This may or may not be what I've heard called the "100" Crew. I clearly have a lot to learn about this operation... but that's what makes things fun!

The 1995 Union Pacific special to Bend, Oregon pauses at The Dalles' modest depot to change crews. In the mid-1990s, UP was still running a tri-weekly local down the Oregon Trunk out of The Dalles - to Bend on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning to The Dalles the following day.

A new crew boards Amtrak SDP40F No. 631 on the head end of train 87 the Silver Meteor at Tampa Union Station on 23 April 1981. Curiously they will only take the run a short distance around the bay to its destination of St. Petersburg.
Lovin' the crew... lovin' the crew... lovin' the blue... <3
As the colour blue is taking over my Blythe family, I decided to split my January 2017 Perfect 10 photo into two... the blue crew and the sepia crew :D
More hair flying... I really must at least try to control this obsession.

I had a great night last night with Komeg and a bunch of cool folks doing an LP workshop in Chee Tor tunnel. This was for Redeye Manchester for whom we did a talk last year and they approached us to do a practical.
I grabbed this just before midnight as I hadn't got my shot for the day.
Everyone went home happy and fingers crossed those who attended continue to wave those lights around.
Happy days.

An old photograph that I found as I set up a RAID. Each yacht club around Strangford Lough hosts an open race regatta. Then all the crews pile ashore to be fed sandwiches cake and beer at the host club. This was one well fed crew untying and heading home on a very misty day.
9014 lights up the station on a crisp fall night at Jackman. 9014 gets short rest while the handoff of Job 1 takes place and the two crews have an exchange of words. It's 10:00 and soon both crews will board their new trains and head the respected ways.
