Filtres NISI: GND Reverse 3 stops + CPL True colors

A kind of funny story....I had my CPL filter and 10 stop filter on my lens when I took this shot. They are both made by Breakthrough Photography, so fit together well. Too well, apparently. When I tried to unscrew them and take them apart, they came off together. Nothing I did could get them apart. Finally, I went to my local camera store, and they couldn't get them apart either. I asked if they had a filter wrench, and no, they did not. They recommended I take the filters to a camera repair store about 30 minutes away. I thanked them, took the filters back, and immediately, they just slid apart. We all had to laugh, and the camera store guy said, "That will be $75!" :) Go figure!

Do any of you have a special technique for when filters get stuck to each other?

Lake Offensee is a very nice lake in the mountains of Upper Austria. It is very easy to reach by car and there is a very nice hiking trail around the lake that invites you to walk for hours and enjoy the wonderful view across the lake into the mountains.

A West bound NS freight train with a GE C44-9W leader at Portage, PA before those Color Position Lights went off for good.

NS 4077 leads an eastbound intermodal past the east CPL at Dogwood about an hour after sunrise.

The Cincinnati Scenic’s GP30 1776 leads the passenger special into the Barber Jct station, passing the N&W CPL signal on site at NCTM

CSX CM44AC 7232 is heading southbound on the Toledo Sub as it passes former B&O CPL signals in Deshler, OH.

WNYP 630 leads a Port Allegany bound train by the dead PRR era CPLs at North Eldred, Pennsylvania during a heavy downpour on August 7, 2019.

The sun is setting on another day along the former N&W Pocahontas Division as Norfolk Southern SD70ACe #1187 grinds upgrade in Notch 8 outside of Elkhorn, WV during the late afternoon of March 21, 2021. The fencing you see to the right is to protect the tracks against falling rocks. While I do not know if this same system is in place, during the N&W days if a large rock(s) were to fall and break through the slide fencing a relay was tripped which would change the nearest east and westbound facing CPL to a "stop" indication.

Having guided train movements for almost a century, the tired B&O CPL intermediate signals light up for a nighttime eastbound at Nebraska, IN. Around 30 hours later, they would be deactivated and removed on 8/20/2025.

Or it could be Station Saturday. Southbound SIRI is passing the Dubois depot and the ex B&O CPL at the south end of the siding on a nice fall day. Replacement GE's were already on the property so this was a swan song for solid sets of ex CR SD60's on the B&P.

Q313, the daily Russell, KY- Cincinnati, OH manifest twists around the impressive elevated stretch of railroad that starts across the river in Covington. The CPL's are still out en masse here at CT down to KC Jct, but north of Cincinnati the signal gang has been making "progress" and it's only a matter of time before this scene is ruined.

Amazing to see this every time we can. Had a nice later afternoon and sunset here on this trip. Liked the shadows and light at this time captured with the CPL filter.

Coal loads roll east out of Bluefield on the NS former N&W at Ingleside, West Virginia just after dawn and before the sunlight could reach into the valley, passing classic CPL's that were on short time before replacement - October 1, 2014.

A pair of former Conrail EMD SD80 MACs lead an eastbound coal drag 592 through the form Pennsy CPLs at MP 198 in Mill Creek, PA on NS's Pittsburgh Line. The heavy morning fog on the cool fall morning is quickly burning off at this point as the sun starts to rise over the nearby hillsides.

I’m sure I’m not the only one whose emotions are influenced by the weather. During the winter of cold days, rain, wind and early evenings, it’s hard to be joyful, upbeat and positive. And then as Summer comes we’re outside more, warmer, and generally happier.

This is a spot in the Little Lakes Valley of the Sierra Nevadas, and this particular area is around 11,000ft in elevation. Air is really thin, and there are only a few months of the year where it’s accessible with no snow. I took this in early October last year and they got their first major snow storm the week after. But the sun will always come out eventually. Patience. Summer is less than three months away. And San Diego is less than three hours away, and we all know who is in San Diego right?

Hearing some rumblings that the B&O CPL signals on the Toledo Sub might be replaced I spend some time on the sub on March 11, 2024, starting here in Deshler where we see train M559 coming around the connection to start the trip south. M559 is a Willard to Queensgate 'local' that works Lima and Hamilton en route. The B&O CPL signals were designed in the 1920's to replace the functions of the mechanical semaphores that preceded them. They improved on other position light variants by adding color and having dwarf signals that exactly mimicked the signal mast versions. I found one reference claiming that the first ones installed were on the B&O around Deshler. All the mainline signals at Deshler were replaced years ago but there are still quite a few on the Toledo Sub south of town.

Both times I headed to the beach side of Point Mugu, I was treated with cloudy skies, varying winds and different sunsets. When I use the 10 stop filter during the day at the ocean, I seem to slightly underexpose the shot, regardless of exposure time. This isn't always intentional but helps me keep details in the sky I might otherwise lose.

I still play around with the 10 stop using both a circular polarizer on the end or without and while it's tougher to color correct when I use both (actually, I have trouble with color correction on a lot of the longer exposure water shots), I think the results are often interesting.

On this trip, the waves were smaller and the tide a bit lower so I shot much closer to the sea than I originally intended. When I returned the second time, this rock was getting battered by waves and I most likely would've been washed off it along with my gear had a lifeguard not told me to stay a bit farther back than I was when she first found me.

There is still one area I haven't climbed down to yet and perhaps next time I'll finally make my way there. The cove that's visible in a few previous posts is the area and as long as the tide level is manageable, I intend to do it.

CSX train M452-1 begins its climb out of the Muscatatuck River valley east of Nebraska, IN.

As an afternoon thunderstorm rolls in, northbound 12Z enters the picturesque location of Arcadia, VA on a hot June day. The ancient N&W CPLs serve as a cherry on top to this scene. Unfortunately, as of today (12/03/24), they have fallen in favor of the new safetran installations. While the scene at Arcadia will always be enjoyable, it will not be the same without the Norfolk and Western sentinels.
