All the while I spent observing and photographing a spider, this character crept closer and closer in a fashion only mantis can do...until finally we were eyeballing each other.

I heard on the radio yesterday that last month was our hottest July across the whole country since records began, we really have had no winter at all. And it's been evident out and about through insect activity.

A peacock still strides confidently along the shore of the lake. The correct description should of course be "male peafowl", the female being a peahen, but let us not get too obsessed with technicalities !

It is only in display that the male erects his extensive tail coverts with with their iridescent ocelli -- and they are coverts, they are not the tail itself. It was Darwin himself who wondered why this huge encumbrance (in this individual not yet fully developed) was not selected against in the process of natural selection. He concluded that it was selected FOR by females who mated with those males with the most impressive train. This theory is not universally accepted however.

The species is a member of the pheasant family endemic to the Indian subcontinent including Sri Lanka. It is also the national bird of India.

The black bulbul is 24–25 cm in length, with a long tail. The body plumage ranges from slate grey to shimmering black, depending on the race. The beak, legs, and feet are all orange and the head has a black fluffy crest. Sexes are similar in plumage, but young birds lack the crest, have whitish underparts with a grey breast band, and have a brown tint to the upperparts. They have a black streak behind the eye and on the ear coverts.

Eastern Bluebird.

A 7 inch bird with bright blue above and on the wings and tail with a rusty throat and breast having a white belly and undertail coverts. The female is similarly colored but duller.

It inhabits open woodlands and farmlands with scattered trees.

An eastern bird, they range east of the Rockies in southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They can also be found in the mountains in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. They winter in the southern part of their range.

Covert Arch is a rarely visited treat in the Arches back country. As you walk across the sandstone canyon rim, you may find yourself unexpectedly standing on top of it and then having to backtrack to get a peek at its impressive scale.

Small finchlike bird with large range from Colombia to Argentina. Primarily found at high elevations in the Andes, but occurs lower towards the southern part of its range. Male is gray overall with stout yellow bill, rufous undertail coverts, and small white mark on wing. Look for white in tail in flight. Female is brownish and streaky with dingy bill. Look for pairs or flocks in open habitats including disturbed agricultural areas and dry grasslands.

Okay. A lazy, lazy day for me. Quick shot and processing of my PC keyboard... worn from a great deal of typing... but I don't need to know which letters are where. Good thing. They almost look like chocolate caramels... now I want some candy... 😄

View from the Icknield Way, Aston Clinton.

Most of my woodland scenes are taken from the inside looking out. Here is part of Wendover Woods from the outside.

I noticed this beautiful valley for the first time while held up at roadworks. I finally took a chance and blocked the farm drive for a few minutes to take some photos.

There are the beginnings of a major earthwork to the left of the picture - so far I can’t find out what exactly it is. There is archeology supporting settlement within a 2 mile radius from here. Finds date from the Bronze Age through to Saxon times with a Saxon burial site about a mile up the road, and an Iron Age Hill Fort nearby. The photograph is taken from the Upper Icknield Way so I guess Roman Soldiers were treated to this view - whether they enjoyed it or not we’ll never know.

Notes and Key facts

Scientific name: Carduelis spinus

Status: Resident breeding species and winter visitor

Breeding birds: 410,000 pairs

Conservation status: Green

Length: 11 – 12 cm

Wingspan: 20 – 23 cm

Weight: 12 – 18 g

Description

Siskins are yellow-green finches with dark streets on its belly. They have bright yellow rumps, wing bars and tail edges.

Male siskins have a black cap and black bib. Females have more streaks and juveniles have brown upper parts and more streaks than females.

Nesting

Female siskins build nests usually high up in conifer trees. The nest is small and made from twigs, heather, grass, moss and cobwebs lined with hair, fur and feathers.

Siskins lay 2-6 eggs which are smooth and glossy and pale blue with pink or light purple spots.

The eggs are incubated for 11-14 days by the female and the chicks fledge at 13-15 days.

Feeding

Siskins are seed eaters and are particularly dependent on spruce during breeding season as well as alders and birch. They will supplement their diet with insects.

Siskins will visit gardens in winter for food if seed crops have been poor.

Siskin

Where to see them

Siskins can be seen during breeding season across Scotland and Wales.

During the winter they are also seen in England.

Did you know?

There is a German legend which says that siskins guard a magic stone in their nests that makes them invisible because they become so elusive during breeding season.

Birdspot Notes.

Near intersection of Bethal Ridge Road and 1304 Road, Yakima County, Washington. Found in mixed forest, in Ponderosa pine zone with some understory where there are seeps. Nearby open grassland but mostly forest.

Expert birders have suggested that this is a Hammond's and another expert has identified this bird as a Dusky Flycatcher. I have listed this bird as Hammond's after initially listing as Hammond's/Dusky at ebird. I uploaded several photos of the same bird.

I thought this was a flycatcher when I saw and photographed it but the hooked bill doesn't seem right for a flycatcher. Resembles Hammond's or Dusky Flycatcher except for the hooked bill. Update: Maybe what I think is a hooked bill is an insect? Any suggestions?

I will update after I get positive id. I originally thought this was a flycatcher but no longer believe that is the case.

Note hooked bill, orange lower mandible, messy whitish/grayish eye ring more distinct behind eye, white lores, black triangle behind eye. Gray breast, pale yellow underside and untertail coverts.See additional photos.
