This image is of a NASA snow coverage map using satellite imaging. It has collected data from March 2000 to October 2018. After researching, I believe my first two questions are correlated. I asked “Why is there no snow cover recorded on the oceans at all?” and “Why does the North Pole snow cover change but the South Pole doesn’t?” There is no recorded snow cover on this map for the North Pole because NASA uses Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The MODIS relies on visible light to assess snow cover. Since the highest latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere have no sunlight during the winter, the sensor is not able to capture data says the NASA website. Additionally, the National Snow & Ice Data Center explains that the Arctic is a semi-enclosed ocean, almost completely surrounded by land. Because of this, precipitation is relatively rare. However, Antarctica is surrounded by mostly ocean. This means moisture is more readily available. The Antarctic ice tends to be covered by thicker snow which may push the ice below sea level. The NOAA states that warmer temperatures are shortening the amount of time snow is on the ground in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperature increases have also lead to decreased snow and ice coverage in many areas of the Arctic during parts of the year. This effects how much water is in rivers and reservoirs as well as the length of the growing season. Ocean Blue Project states there is evidence that snow falls over large bodies of water. It even credits NOAA with capturing imagery of white snow bands collecting on the surface of the ocean. It’s still unclear as to why the map from NASA does not capture this snow cover.
My final question was “Why does the upper part of India (Nepal) snow all year round?” Due to the high altitude of the landscape it maintains some amount of snow almost all year says NASA. Around the same latitude is the Tibetan Plateau. Tibet is one of the highest altitude areas in the world. One city, Lhasa is 11,500 feet above sea level. Because of this is it has it’s own pattern of snow. The higher the altitude the less pressure the Earth’s atmosphere feels, which causes it to expand. The Naked Scientist blog states “When the gas expands it does some work. And and if it's doing work, it must be losing some energy; and if it loses energy, its temperature must drop because we define temperature as the average energy of the particles. Therefore, if the energy of the particles is lower, the temperature must be lower.” Since there is water vapor surrounding the area, it accumulated in the atmosphere and creates precipitation which is snow most of the year. Because of the elevation, there is not much that effects the climate.

A row of four trees was removed by the city 3 or 4 years ago, with no replacement planting. Result is full sun exposure in that section of the block.
