Herder groups in Must Soum, Mongolia, are collectively developing their own land use plans and best practices for wild life protection, water and food management which can be reproduced nationwide. UNDP supports herder groups to improve their economic activities, while reorienting grazing, forest use, tourism and sport hunting to protect biodiversity.

News coverage of Afghanistan has focused almost entirely on the war, leaving much of the country’s population – particularly women and girls – out of the headlines. The news isn’t good: Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world; girls on their way to school risk being assaulted; and youth face persistent low-level violence in cities and the countryside. Bringing together experts from a diversity of disciplines and policy areas, this half-day conference examined how women and youth have fared during a decade of conflict, and the challenges and opportunities that they face in Afghanistan’s uncertain future.

The Ocean Lakes-Cox match-up was filled with emotions.
On one side, Ocean Lakes running back Khalan Laborn was playing against his former team.
On the other side, the Falcons were playing for their coach, Bill Stachelski, who was suspended by Principal Randi Riesbeck for the rest of the season Thursday for reasons that have not been disclosed.
The Falcons gave a valiant effort and kept it close early. But the nationally ranked Dolphins, led by Laborn, pulled away in the second half to roll to a 49-7 victory. The Dolphins have now won 40 games in a row against Beach District foes.
Laborn, who transferred to Ocean Lakes in March, said there were no hard feelings against his former teammates.
But there was nothing friendly about Laborn's running. He got the Dolphins on the scoreboard first with a 28-yard touchdown run to put them up 7-0.
Ocean Lakes (9-0) added to its lead five minutes later on quarterback Tyler DeSue's 67-yard pass to Tahj Capehart that made it 14-0.
But the Falcons put together an 11-play, 60-yard drive that was finished by Matt DeMasi's 5-yard touchdown run. The extra point cut the deficit to 14-7.
The Falcons (6-3) had several opportunities to tie the game in the second quarter, but couldn't capitalize. Twice, Cox stopped Ocean Lakes deep in Dolphins territory, but the Falcons came away empty on a missed field goal and a fumble.
Laborn made the Falcons pay as he went 37 yards to give Ocean Lakes a 21-7 lead with 1:39 left in the first half.
Still, Cox had another chance. This time, the Falcons drove to the Ocean Lakes' 10. But Dolphins defensive back Anthony Womack intercepted Cox quarterback Cole Johnson as time ran out.
The second half was all Laborn and the Dolphins. Laborn, who leads South Hampton Roads in rushing yards and touchdowns, added to his total with a 50-yard score to begin the third quarter.
The defense was led by freshman Jake Low. He finished with nine tackles, a sack and fumble recovery.

I don't think I am overly sentimental about historical events. However, even though I have more or less successfully avoided coverage of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, my thoughts returned often to that day and to the 10 years that have passed since then.
Today my wife and I visited the Carrizo Plain in Central California. Though we lived in Santa Barbara for over 5 years, we never made it there. Today we were nearby and couldn't pass on the opportunity - it was a place we had always wanted to visit.
Even in Summer, with the air hazy from nearby lightening-lit fires over the past two days, the Carrizo Plain is teaming with the promise of life. We saw numerous fence lizards - their speed over ground into sheltering holes was astounding. A large garter snake greeted us at the San Andreas Fault’s meeting with Wallace Creek. And the birds… Ravens were numerous and ever-present - two harassed a Golden Eagle in the distance. Overhead, a family of Red-tailed Hawks played and called to one another. Kestrels sallied from fence post to fence post. And we saw our first ever Prairie Falcons (2 of them).
At the center of it all, Carrizo’s most distinguishing feature: Soda Lake. Soda Lake is a large (7 miles long) seasonal lake. During the Summer, it completely dries out, leaving the legacy of its waters’ salinity. A stratum of salt covers the lake bottom – the desolation of the lake amplified by the crunch of salt underfoot. And yet, I know of the life that this area supports. I can hear the Meadowlarks sing in the brush on the shore. I see the Ravens and Hawks patrolling the sky above my head. And I know, in a few months, rains will sweep down the Temblor and Caliente Ranges encompassing the Carrizo Valley, careen into creeks and washes below their slopes, and fill Soda Lake. And in the Winter and Spring, Soda Lake will be reborn. Majestic Sandhill Cranes will migrate to the lake and forage on the new life within its waters. Ferruginous Hawks, Merlins, and Northern Harriers will join their fellow raptors in flight over the last refuge of native Californian Grasslands. And shorebirds such as American Avocets, Mountain Plovers, Killdeer, and Long-billed Curlews will wade into the Lake in search of the numerous invertebrates that appear with the arrival of water.
Soda Lake will live again. The changing of the seasons will impel the cycle of life in the Carrizo Plain. Today we celebrated life by glancing through a window at a day in the life of the Carrizo Plain; seeing a snapshot of its ever-changing state. I know that tomorrow will not be like today, and that January 11th will not be like September 11th. Processes continue on. Life continues on. Today, in my own way, I celebrated my life, my wife’s life, and the life that is around me, by trying to take it all in, trying to be in the moment, and knowing, while our lives and the lives of the plants and creatures we witnessed today are short compared to the timeline of geological events like the Pacific Plate slipping against the North American Plate, and galactic events like the collision of stars, our lives are not insignificant, and they are something to be treasured each and every day.
