Under the influence of recently televised events
I’ve begun to think about artichokes and our life
together as artichoke farmers, that happy band
of people we know nothing about except what’s
written in the ancient texts. And now I’ve grown
tired of thinking about that. Instead I’ll relay this:
Where we stayed there was a couple who arrived
in a black car, a large Mercedes Benz. They were
in their thirties but he already had a small pot belly
and she had an odd manner—her body seemed
to be operated by wires and pulleys being manipulated
offstage somewhere. Something in the way she
flung her arms around when she talked. They spent
a lot of time hanging around outside their car.
One or the other would be inside the car while
the other walked around outside the car, talking
and gesturing or just looking out at the water.
Sometimes they would be on their cell phones, one
or the other or both at the same time. The man
carried his phone on a lanyard around his neck
and would occasionally swing it in a half arc
while the woman talked to him or to someone
on her phone. The man then left. He walked
around toward the front of the building, carrying
a black briefcase he’d removed from the car’s boot.
They exchanged a few words before he disappeared,
the woman jerking in her special manner. She then
strolled down to the gazebo that was near the beach.
She sat on the rail and seemed to be trying to find
a comfortable position. She took out her cell phone,
looked at it, then put it back inside her small bag.
About half an hour elapsed before the man returned.
He used his phone to make a call. The woman
answered her phone, then left the gazebo and rejoined
the man near the car. They talked a few minutes as
they moved in and out of the car’s shadow, as if
performing some precisely choreographed dance.
They then disappeared into one of the lower rooms
of the motel. A few minutes later they both emerged
carrying large and small parcels: a suitcase, several
plastic bags, an old-fashioned cosmetics case of good
leather and a few more plastic and paper bags. A violin
or viola case. Now they both got inside the car. I waited
for them to drive away. Soon we’d be leaving, too.
But they just sat in the car. I carried things to our
car. We checked out and started the drive home.
They would drive all night into the southern most
part of the state, where the highway ends. More
cell phone conversations. Rest stops. Their special
dance around the black car. Moments alone staring
at their reflection in the mirrors of motels and gas
stations. Stops to buy some of the good and inexpensive
fruit you can get down there.
I really like this particular image. It's one of those pictures that you know could tell a great story. Photobooth.

This couple jumped in front of one of the military's pipes and drum bands which were participating in the commemoration parade for the 200th anniversary for the Battle of York (now Toronto). I couldn't tell if the couple were legit or were taking part in a promotional shoot.

There was something very nice about this couple sitting along side this beautiful scene.
This year these trees were stunning!
Golden temples, markets, amazing beaches, yellow curry noodles, balloon pants, and many more amazing sights, in Chiang Mai, Koh Phangan, and Bangkok. This is Thailand!
