Road trip - Cottontop will form after flowering

A Cotton-top Tamarin at Disney Animal Kingdom

I know my little corner of flickr says "wildlife" but I moved to a new town and the Brevard Zoo is close by. I wanted to test my new camera body and these endangered monkeys look pretty cool.

The scaled quail, also commonly called blue quail or cottontop, is found in the arid regions of the Southwestern United States to Central Mexico. This bird is named for the scaly appearance of its breast and back feathers. When disturbed, it prefers to run rather than fly. Scaled quail inhabit dry, open valleys, plains, foothills, rocky slopes, draws, gullies, and canyons that have a mixture of bare ground, low herbaceous growth, and scattered brushy cover. Scaled quail are popular gamebirds.

Cotton-Top Tamarin "The tiny cotton-top, which weighs less than a pound, is named for the shock of white hair that sits atop its head. The monkeys, nicknamed the cutest in South America, entertain researchers with their endless antics.

However, cotton-top tamarins are among the most endangered primates in the world. They are found only in northwestern Colombia, and their tropical forest habitat is being destroyed for roads, agriculture, food and housing. Cotton-tops are also captured and illegally sold as pets." I have always been amazed at the photographic opportunities in California's Alabama Hills. I like to walk around in the morning and evening to see what might catch my eye. I love to photograph cactus and other flora found next to the distinctive rocks of this area. I found this cottontop cactus along the Arch Loop Trail of the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California. This photo is from our March 2018 visit to Lone Pine.

Life bird #3 for my AZ trip! With help of my good friend Sam, after several attempts over the years, I was able to photograph these beautiful quail in Southeast AZ. Thanks Sam.

The Alabama Hills in Lone Pine California are one of my favorite locations to photograph. I enjoy the contrasts to be found: like this example of the soft yellow rabbit bush versus the sharp spiked needles of the cottontop cactus. I discovered this pair on the Arch Loop Trail at sunset. As the sun dropped below the Sierra, it produced a nice soft light ... excellent for this type of photography.

Here is a grouping of Cottontop Cacti overlooking the granite field of the Alabama Hills and California’s Sierra Nevada range. I just wish the stupid rainbow wasn’t blocking the view of the mountains.

Anyway, if you’re interested in learning how I (a idiot) create my images, you can head to www.ryandyar.com for information. ¡Ahora con subtítulos en español!

Can you hear it? The virgin silence is only broken and interrupted by the sounds of bullfrogs, birds overhead (and in the fields), and the low grumbling tones of the alligator's mating calls. There's nothing like it...natural beauty and the sounds of nature. I enjoy this three mile walk at least twice a week, and there is always something new to see and explore. Sometimes deer! Even the skies are always different with the changing seasons. Thanks for enjoying it with me.

Up on a sage brush on the West Rim of the Rio Grande Gorge. A new bird for my life list, although I have hunted these birds in Texas. I didn't keep a list back then and when I began I did't go back and add birds I'd seen previously.

Has the nickname of "Cotton Top" for obvious reasons. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

For my ongoing bird-a-day project for 2017. Thanks all!

Happy Furday

Cotton-Top TAMARIN

Saguinus oedipus

* Cotton-top tamarins are found only in rain forests and open woodlands of Colombia.

* They are named for the white hairs that seem to stand on end atop their thinly furred face.

* Jumping from tree to tree, they feed on fruit, nectar, nuts, tree sap and gum, insects, and other animals.

* Tamarin populations have been negatively impacted by hunting, illegal pet trade, use as laboratory specimens, and habitat destruction
