The image today was taken this afternoon in the Brewhouse Yard area of the City Centre of Nottingham. The view is of the outside of 'Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem'. This historic building lays claim to being the oldest Inn in England. It has a long a rich history as both a Brewery and as an Inn. This unique building is built into the sandstone rock that The World Famous Nottingham Castle (think Robin Hood) is built on. Originally the caves were carved out of the rocks when the Castle was built (about 1068 AD). These included the Ground floor caves which now form some of the rooms of the Inn. There are also a network of caves under the 'Trip' (as it known locally) these stretch from the sandstone rock up into the Castle and then much further into Nottingham City Centre itself. The date of 1189 and name of the Inn or Pub is reported to refer to the time of the Crusades under King Richard I (Richard the Loinheart). Knights world stop off to rest at Nottingham Castle on the way to their 'Trip to Jerusalem' (hence the current name of the pub). The original name of the Inn was called the 'Pilgrim'. The current building dates back to about 1650, although records have only been kept regarding the landlords of the pub from 1751. It is a strong matter of debate on whether this is actually the oldest Inn in England but it is without a doubt one of the oldest.

The building remained empty for some years until about four year ago when it was converted into it's current use as a Bar / Grill House. Part of the old features of the court have been restored including, the cells of the court. These have been transformed into a dining area. The judge’s seat and the crown crest along with the viewing gallery and the dock also survive. One of the more notable cases was in the year 1849. This was the case of Mary Ball. Next I used DistressedFX to add the Stirred overlay and the Lade texture. Finally I used PhotoToaster to add the Recover Highlights preset and a Medium Dark Vignette. I then applied the Old Paper texture and the Leather frame.
Today's photo was taken this morning in the Town of Warwick. The view is of part of the historic Warwick Castle. The main part of the view is of Caesars Tower as seen from the bottom of Mill Street. Caesars Tower is highest of the defensive towers of the castle. It stands at just under 45 meters high and was built in the 14th century for Thomas Beauchamp the 11th Earl of Warwick.

The original photo was taken today in the small North Warwickshire village of Astley. This is an image of Astley Castle. Although not actually a Castle, this Fortified Manor House originally dates back to the 12th Century where it is recorded that the Astley family held the Manor. The manor passed to the Grey family, through marriage during the 1420's. It is during this time that the First of Three English Queens lived in the Manor House. Elizabeth Woodville first lived in the House as wife of Sir John Grey. After he died during one of the battles of the War of the Roses, Elizabeth caught the eye of Edward IV who was about to be crowned King of England. The second Queen to live in the Manor House was Elizabeth of York (Daughter of Edward IV and the now Queen Elizabeth). Elizabeth of York went on to marry King Henry VII. The final Queen to live at Astley Castle was Lady Jane Grey (the famously ill fated Nine Day Queen of England). Even with all of it's history the Manor House fell into disrepair and was put onto the Building at Risk register after it was damaged by fire in 1978. By 2007 after vandalism and partial collapse the Castle was classed as One of the Sixteen most endangered historical sites in Britain by English Heritage. The Landmark Trust have since taken over and restored the Castle with a mixture of luxury modern accommodation while maintaining and restoring the shell of the ruins. Astley Castle is a Grade II* listed building as well as being a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Up to 8 People can now book and stay in the Castle / Manor House in complete luxury and maybe experience some of the history that comes with it.

As always, a photo each day for 365 days. All shot and edited using Apps on my iPhone 5.
The photo was taken using the camera App Cortex Camera for iPhone. The original image can be found below.
First of all I used the app ShockMyPic to edit the image making some of the details a bit more artistic. After that I used an app called LensFlare to apply lighting to the image. Finally I used Distressed FX to add extra texture to the image using the Egret overlay and the Sentiment Texture.
The original photo was taken this morning in Baginton, a village on the outskirts of Coventry. The image is of Lunt Roman Fort. The site is a rebuilt Roman fort that would have originally been in use nearly 2000 years ago. The main part of the image is of the reconstructed Gatehouse. While next to it on the left side is the Gyrus which may have been used as the cavalry training arena. The site was rediscovered and reconstructed upon the original foundations during the 1960's and 1970's.
The site is classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is number 7 on my list of 10 Scheduled Ancient Monument's in the Coventry area that I hope to photograph.
The image today was taken this afternoon in the Historic Spon Street area of Coventry City Centre. The view is of number 20-21 Spon Street. Currently empty this fine old building of two halves was originally the Green Dragon Inn located in Much Park Street, a different part of Coventry. The oldest part of this building is the rear section. This dates back to about 1450 and was used as the Hall of the Inn along with guest chambers. The front part of the building dates back to about the year 1500 and was a newer addition, built on the site of an earlier Hall house. The whole building was dismantled from its original location in 1972. It was rebuilt here in Spon Street in 1981-1982 as part of the ambitious Historic Townscape scheme for Spon Street.
The photo was taken using the app Cortex Camera on my iPhone 6.
First I used the app Handy Photo to edit the photo. I used the retouch feature to delete a couple of commercial bins from the side of the building, along with the TV aerial on the roof and a couple of alarm boxes and lights from the front of the building. I also used the same app to apply the Polarised filter to the image. Next I used the app Stackables to apply the formula called Seasons. I then used the app DistressedFX to add the Stirred overlay and the Lade texture. Finally I used PhotoToaster to add the Recover Highlights preset, the Drama FX and a Medium Dark Vignette. I then applied the Old Paper texture and the Antique frame.
The image today was taken this evening in the Warwickshire town of Kenilworth. The view is of Leicester's Gatehouse which is part of Kenilworth Castle. This building dates back to 1571 and was constructed by Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester. The purpose of this building was to give access to the Hunting park which Dudley had made for one of the visits by Queen Elizabeth I. It is well known that Dudley was one of the Queen's favourites, that is probably why she visited and stayed at Kenilworth Castle on four separate occasions during her reign.

Next I used the app Lens Distortions to apply the Fog number 5 layer, I moved the effect to the lower part of the image to help give a misty look to the picture. Very impressive!
Notice that the app crops the shot slightly, also changing the dimension from 2592 x 1936 [iPad original size] to 4088 x 3064. File size goes from 2.1 MB to 2.8 MB.
Apparently, a similar technology is used in Sony cameras when using the HHT settings:
"In the clever Hand-held Twilight and Anti Motion Blur scene modes, the A7 takes six shots in a rapid sequence, typically at a high sensitivity setting and a (relatively) fast shutter speed, and then combines them into a single image that has somewhat less noise than a single shot taken at the same ISO and exposure settings. In our experience, the difference between the two modes is that in Anti Motion Blur mode, the camera is more willing to pick a really high ISO setting like ISO 6400 to maintain a fast shutter speed, whereas in Hand-held Twilight mode, it will only go as high as absolutely necessary to avoid camera shake at the chosen focal length. If light levels are truly low, however, the A7 will pick a high ISO speed even in this mode."
from Sony A7 Review, Photography Blog
There is really no excuse, except for inferior camera processors, that this kind of Noise Reduction technology and HDR, Aperture Blending should be lacking in any new semi-pro camera.
Shot with Cortex Camera on the iPhone 5 and edited in VSCOcam. Unfortunately VSCOcam stripped all of the EXIF data (which is fairly limited in Cortex Camera.)
