made this little bouquet myself at the farmers market for a grand total of $2.50. This will be a new Saturday routine for me, for sure.

Between the farmers market, the found film, and the quality time with my two loves, the weekend was great! I found a one hour photo place here too and will be taking some 35mm over asap to see how they do.

In bigger news, the new Mortal Muses has been launched! Go check it out!

This 1953 addition to the Palmer Park apartment community was part of the Modernist wave in post WW II America. Covington Arms was designed by Paul Tilds as a co-operative building, with each of its sixteen units custom-designed for its owner..

8151 S. East End was built in 1939 on a shallow, trapezoidal lot a stone's throw from the eventual site of the Chicago Skyway in the Avalon Park neighborhood. Its neighbors were generally built either in the 1920s (such as the bungalow partially visible to the right) or the 1950s and early 1960s (such as the houses that back up to it from diagonal Anthony Avenue, visible in the background).

The house itself is somewhat typical of those built in Chicago in the late 1930s and 1940s. Moderne influences are clear, with minimal ornament, simple massing, and those corner casement windows which I love! The style telegraphs an efficient use of building materials, which would have been a requirement given the economic circumstances of the era. Even the metal awning is a later addition, a concession to providing some shelter beyond the immediate and severe walls of the house. [blogged]

950 Whitmore was designed by Robert West. I have been unable to locate much biographical information on him, but he designed several apartment buildings in the Palmer Park area. This one is noted for its corner windows.

San Jose, California.

These are two Moderne efforts by local architect Robert West. Very similar in size and scale, the primary differences are the window layouts and the corner windows on the building at left (The Balmoral Apartments, at 361 Covington Drive) and the asymmetrical facade of the building on the right (The Fairlane Apartments). Both were built in 1937and are contributing properties to the Palmer Park Apartment Buildings Historic District (Boundary Increase), listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Uninterrupted horizontal lines, bands, brows, rails, and ledges make for a wonderful repetition of the floorplate up into a modestly sized tower. The few vertical elements articulate the main entrance with the height of the central tower flanked with spears of glass block. This stately little Streamline Moderne structure is a nice study in horizontal versus vertical styling.

Campbell, California.

By the early 1950s, the era of ornate and exotic revival buildings in Palmer Park was long over, but tenants, or in the case of Covington Arms--owners, still wanted elegance and sophistication. Designed by Paul Tilds in the International style, Covington Arms consisted of units from 1800-2400 square feet, designed by the unit's owner and architect. In total, the owners spent over one million in cash to create this up-to-date co-op building. In 2005 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as part of the Palmer Park Apartment Buildings Historic District (Boundary Increase) ). The City of Detroit has now recognized the Palmer Park Apartment District as a local historic district, and 333 Covington is a contributing property.

The Balmoral Apartments were designed by noted local architect Robert West. The building was one of the first in the Palmer Park area to have corner casement windows.

This Moderne style building has contrasting bricks with horizontal stone trim at each of the corner windows. The roofline is edged with stone, as well. In the context of the eclecticism of most Palmer Park apartment buildings, the Balmoral is noted for its perfectly symmetrical facade.

The New York Times (November 28, 2010) declared casement windows are architects' "new darling...a tribute to pre-war architecture." This building should qualify as an "old darling" then.

Designed by Robert West and built before World War II, the Palmer Plaza retains its contemporary look into the 21st century.

Saratoga, California.

Palo Alto, California.

Although not the first in the area to have them, the corner windows in this Palmer Park building are stylish. Robert West was also the architect of this building. Another corner-windowed, Art Deco building by West is located at 361 Covington Drive (the Balmoral Apartments).

San Jose, California, by Wolfe & McKenzie, 1906.

The Balmoral was among the first buildings in Palmer Park to have corner windows. It is one of several in the Park area designed by Robert West.
