The Castle was built as a summerhouse in 1754 for Randle Wilbraham I of Rode Hall. It was built to look like part of a castle of a bygone era, and would have enhanced the view of the newly constructed Rode Hall some 3 miles away on the Cheshire side of the hill. Mr. Wilbraham employed local stonemasons John and Ralph Harding. It is said they were paid 1 shilling a day, and one of the members of the family lost a hand while constructing the castle. The Wilbraham family used the summerhouse for picnics and entertaining friends on days out.

It's not a castle or a house, or even a ruin. It's the southernmost outcrop in Cheshire of hard sandstone grit, rising 355m above sea level. At its highest point stands a mock tower that was built as a summer house in 1754 by Randle Wilbraham, the local Lord of the Manor. This tower is visible for miles around and is a major landmark visited throughout the year. Interestingly, it was the location for the first Primitive Methodist service in 1807.
It's a bit of a strange place with people going up there at all times of the day or night in all conditions, some for the most bizarre reasons. Drinks, drugs, weddings, prayers, sightseeing, sun and moon worship, it has been the setting for a few of my adventures in the past too. See my Mow Cop album!
Anyhow, this shot was a dud. Something has gone wildly wrong in my processing factory!!! Possibly caused by too much booze.
This is a local folly, which we always referred to as 'Mow Cop Castle' when I was a child. Local rumour tells how it was built by a man who wanted to look out of his window and see castle ruins. It's situated in Staffordshire and has a beautiful view of the Cheshire Plain and Jodrell Bank. I took Louisa and a friend here last night for photography practice. They have just started an A level in the subject and I think I'll be enjoying it as much as they do.
Mow Cop
Mow Cop Castle is a folly in the civil parish of Odd Rode in Cheshire. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It sits on a ridge which forms the boundary between the counties of Cheshire and Staffordshire. Traces of a prehistoric settlement have been found here.
In 1754 a man called Randle Wilbraham of nearby Rode Hall, a Georgian Country Manor House, built this elaborate summerhouse to look like a medieval fortress with a round tower.
The area around the castle was nationally famous for the quarrying of high-quality millstones or querns, for use in water mills. Excavations have found querns dating back to the Iron Age.
The Castle was given to the National Trust in 1937.
The round windows in the tower look like eyes to me, gazing out across the countryside.

As you can see, there was a storm brewing over the Cheshire Plain and heading towards Mow Cop Castle. The blue skies are fast disappearing. I'm standing in sunny Staffordshire looking out over the county of Cheshire.
Wild flowers and a host of butterflies now greet you as you climb the hill to the top. Skippers, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers and Small Whites today. The wild Thyme is out, smells gorgeous too...and the Bilberrys are growing nicely. I did a small walk up through the top of the village following the Gritstone Trail to the base of the castle. Got back to my car just as the heavens opened and it poured down. 2 hours later and we were back to sunshine again...oh we just love our English summers! :))))
Zoom in and you can plainly see (just to the left of the castle) the white dish of the famous Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank.
The most striking feature of the Lovell Telescope is the huge white bowl that can be seen for many miles around. This bowl, fashioned in the shape of a paraboloid, is the part of the telescope that gathers incoming radio waves and since 1957 it has been quietly probing the depths of space.
