After a disappointing stay in Grand Staircase Escalante, and a decent sunset/sunrise in Monument Valley, I convinced Bill McIntosh to make a mad dash over to Arches National Park which is a location he had never had a chance to visit in the hopes of redeeming myself. We stopped here at Park Avenue and scouted around to check and see where the Milky Way would be and take a few photos. That's Bill down in the lower corner walking the trail which I have included in the scene for a sense of scale.

I chose this title based on a TV show that I used to watch as a kid. 10 Points if you can figure out the show. Hehe.

“…when you are convinced that all the exits are blocked, either you take to believing in miracles or you stand still like the hummingbird. The miracle is that the honey is always there, right under your nose, only you were too busy searching elsewhere to realize it. The worst is not death but being blind, blind to the fact that everything about life is in the nature of the miraculous.”

happy sliderssunday everyone!

This juvenile Great Blue Heron looked to be singing the "throw me a fish song" as I walked by. If I’d had a fish, he probably would have convinced me to oblige.

Whether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps.

They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher.

Despite their impressive size, Great Blue Herons weigh only 5 to 6 pounds thanks in part to their hollow bones—a feature all birds share.

Great Blue Herons in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada have benefited from the recovery of beaver populations, which have created a patchwork of swamps and meadows well-suited to foraging and nesting.

Along the Pacific coast, it’s not unusual to see a Great Blue Heron poised atop a floating bed of kelp waiting for a meal to swim by.

Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this “powder down” with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. Applying the powder to their underparts protects their feathers against the slime and oils of swamps.

Great Blue Herons can hunt day and night thanks to a high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes that improve their night vision.

Great Blue Herons congregate at fish hatcheries, creating potential problems for the fish farmers. A study found that herons ate mostly diseased fish that would have died shortly anyway. Sick fish spent more time near the surface of the water where they were more vulnerable to the herons.

Thanks to specially shaped neck vertebrae, Great Blue Herons can quickly strike prey at a distance.

The oldest recorded Great Blue Heron was found in Texas when it was at least 24 years, 6 months old.

Hello my amazing friends !

Few years ago, we were living in Algeria and there was this guy ( all the Polish community in Algeria was calling him Dziad) buying used stuff from foreigners and selling it to local people. Usually we would go see him once a year, bringing our stuff (and our neighbors stuff) to sell. Dziad was living near the desert and it was always an awesome trip that I was very excited to on go each year… One particular year, my Dad was asked by a friend to bring « something » to sell… since the favour was asked during a Polish party all my Dad could remember was the name of his friend but he could not remember what exactly the item to sell was. It was all wrapped in a huge plastic bag so only by touching it my Dad was convinced it was a huge tent. Of course, being a man he didn’t want to ask his friend and so we went to sell a huge tent. No need to tell that the « huge tent » was a huge selling success and my Dad got a very good price for it. Returning home, my Dad gave his friend the money telling him how his huge tent was an awesome item to sell… My Dad’s friend was very surprised since it wasn’t a tent at all but an inflatable boat… Since this day, I can’t stop thinking about a Touareg man sleeping in a desert, under a very starry sky in his inflatable boat….

Mucho, mucho amor for you all !!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well.

'Deep Inside I'm Convinced That He Loves Me' is a, abstract macro photograph of a daisy.

Not convinced by this one..... but it took a lot of messing around on wet grass so I think it deserves to be shown to the world ;)

Thank you everyone for all your lovely comments & faves on my last upload..... you definitely love a macro :)

Happy Tuesday All

If you’re convinced you’ll never be able to learn bird calls, start with the Gray Catbird. Once you’ve heard its catty mew you won’t forget it. Follow the sound into thickets and vine tangles and you’ll be rewarded by a somber gray bird with a black cap and bright rusty feathers under the tail. Gray Catbirds are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song.

……Well hopefully the photograph is! The headstock Scroll on this Contrabass has no function so in my book it is a carved decorative artistic adornment. There - Ive convinced myself it will qualify for this weeks theme for ‘Smile on Saturday’ - “Carved Artpieces”…….. Music mostly makes me smile so hopefully this mother & son duet will make YOU smile too - youtu.be/IlbloNUSBJ0 - Now they are true Artists!!!! If you don’t have time now then I urge you to listen later. Have a smily W/End, stay locked down and cosy to stay safe and to keep EVERYONE else safe too! A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the key workers who are carrying on to benefit the rest of us - we applaud you all. Alan;-)👏👏👏👏👏

I took this photo last year in early fall. We had a drought for most of the summer so the river was running dry but a full day of heavy rain convinced me to visit this place the next day. The fall is located right in front of an old Mill which was converted into luxury apartments and the path here is private property but it was the best view of the fall so I took a chance , what’s the worst thing that could happen, some jail time maybe 🤔? Since I laugh in the face of danger I decided to chance it. It was very windy so I knew I wasn’t going to get the trees in focus so I focused directly on the fall. I used an 8 stop ND filter and a CPL since the light was so harsh and I wouldn’t be able to go too long in the exposure but I got the effect I wanted. You’ll have to zoom in to see the misty details. I've passed the site of this shack along California's Hwy 395 several times, but the light and fresh snow on the mountains finally convinced me to spend some time there with the camera.

The body is about 1cm/half inch long. This picture reminds me I need to have a stern word with my window cleaner. The company is called 'Divine Shine' after the owner got religion. I think it was the miracle of being able to clean the windows of an entire street with just half a bucket of water that convinced him. The results are evident....

-----

I can truly say it is one of the most photographed trains of the first half of 2022 ;-) But it is really special to see these old diesels almost every day during a couple of weeks, espcially because every time train photographers are convinced it will be the last year that they will run on Belgian tracks. Wait and see...

I had a litttle trouble getting this shot as a security guard was deliberately blocking my view with his car. I finally convinced him that I'm not a terrorist!

He was convinced I was trying to steal his soul. I had to convince him I was only borrowing it for a fraction of a second (1/800th of a second to be exact) to preserve it for posterity, thus giving him a type of immortality. He finally agreed, albeit with some trepidation.

San José Renaissance Fair.

I almost convinced myself not to get out and shoot yesterday but I knew I would regret it if I didn't try. The sky was a on fire to the east but I couldn't find a comp to take advantage of it. I have missed so many sunrises this year but I am glad to add this to my small 2020 collection.

Apprarently Linus convinced Santa that he was a nice boy because he received some presents for Christmas. His favourite at the moment is his new mouse. The mouse came with a Santa hat and I was quite sure that Linus would remove it soon but so far it is still where it belongs. I don't think that THE BIRDS were very interested in his new toy but Linus knows them better than I do.

Another image from the Almenara wetland in Castellón, Spain. I was hesitant about uploading it since I wasn't convinced about its aesthetic quality, I think is a bit over saturated.

Convinced my daughter to take a rainy afternoon walk with me while visiting her in Seattle.

hmmm... I think im not totally convinced with the composition on this shot, but i wanted to catch the sky too and with the lenses i got with me this is the first idea on my mind, because if i go a little bit back then there is a bridge appearing in the top side

this one convinced me to stop shooting in "raw" on my phone. Can't really beat the automatic settings, regardless of the larger file size

I'm not convinced Daisy needed to wash in the basin, or use the soap. Notice she wasn't looking at me, she knew she wasn't allowed there. Happy Caturday.

(I only noticed after posting - when I took the photo, she still had bare patches where her fur was shaved for tests when she was first ill last year.)

Judy is convinced that this hydrangea, which lives in a pot on our patio, originally had white flowers. And our white climbing roses seem to be turning pink. How very strange.

Being honest I'm not 100% convinced about this image. It was a cold misty morning that was not what the forecast said it should be! But you make the best of the situation don't you and I used a 6 stop ND to smooth out the water. The shorter exposure version I took I didn't like as the foreground water was messy. But the long exposure and the moving mist over the lake of the long exposure softens the clarity a bit. Im just not 100% sure about it but I'd like to open it up to your thoughts... please I welcome any constructive criticism!

** Off we go into another Lockdown I am not convinced its the correct action but I do see the real concerns. The Tories could have dealt with this health crisis much better than they have, there have been too many empty promises and their communication with the public is poor. The death toll is too high and that is as much about the inequalities in our society as the virus itself.

This being said it would be stupid not to accept that all governments have a very difficult job trying to fight the effects of the virus, manage the economy and mitigate the other psychological and medical issues that are not being dealt with whilst the health agencies are so focused on Covid . I do have some sympathy for those people who have to make the difficult decisions.

It could be even worse at least they are not pretending Covid will just disappear magically, claiming miracle cures and accusing Doctors of exaggerating the numbers of deaths because they get more money . It looks like immunity for many will be relatively short lived and while vaccinations may well make a big difference its not all going back to normal anytime soon; I only wish it was . Keep as safe as you can wear a mask and try to look after your spirit as well as your body

The walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door is one of the most spectacular walks along the English coastline . The small beach at Durdle Door can be very crowded at peak times but on this pleasant September morning was quite peaceful . I decided to keep the people in the image to give it a bit of scale

The form of the coastline around Durdle Door is controlled by its geology—both by the contrasting hardnesses of the rocks, and by the local patterns of faults and folds. The arch has formed on a concordant coastline where bands of rock run parallel to the shoreline. The rock strata are almost vertical, and the bands of rock are quite narrow. Originally a band of resistant Portland limestone ran along the shore, the same band that appears one mile along the coast forming the narrow entrance to Lulworth Cove. Behind this is a 390 ft band of weaker, easily eroded rocks, and behind this is a stronger and much thicker band of chalk, which forms the Purbeck Hills. These steeply dipping rocks are part of the Lulworth crumple, itself part of the broader Purbeck Monocline, produced by the building of the Alps during the mid-Cenozoic.

Around this part of the coast nearly all of the limestone has been removed by sea erosion, whilst the remainder forms the small headland which includes the arch. UNESCO teams monitor the condition of both the arch and adjacent beach.

THANKS FOR YOUR VISITING BUT CAN I ASK YOU NOT TO FAVE AN IMAGE WITHOUT ALSO MAKING A COMMENT. MANY THANKS KEITH.

I’m convinced if I’d had my actual camera, they would have been inside. Today wasn’t bad, except for the wind and the storm that wi be here soon. Gorgeous horses.

I convinced Brad to stop and investigate the hint of brightness in the clouds, at a weigh station for trucks hence the bright field

I do quite like finishing work on Wednesday, knowing it's all downhill to the weekend.

I found this acrobatic wasp in Failford at the weekend.... currently trying to find an ID. It looks similar to one in my insect book (Protichneumon pisorius), but I'm not convinced.

Because I convinced myself not to invest on an IR converted camera, I am just creating it in Photoshop :) This is the third photo I processed to mimic an IR image. The image is a 30 second exposure with the use of a 10-stop ND filter.

MAGIC THEATER*

ENTRANCE NOT FOR EVERYBODY

I TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR, BUT THE HEAVY OLD LATCH WOULD NOT STIR. THE DISPLAY TOO WAS OVER. IT HAD SUDDENLY CEASED, SADLY CONVINCED OF ITS USELESSNESS.

I TOOK A FEW STEPS BACK, LANDING DEEP INTO THE MUD, BUT NO MORE LETTERS CAME.

THE DISPLAY WAS OVER. FOR A LONG TIME I STOOD WAITING IN THE MUD, BUT IN VAIN.

THEN, WHEN I HAD GIVEN UP AND GONE BACK TO THE ALLEY.

A FEW COLORED LETTERS WERE DROPPED HERE AND THERE,

REFLECTED ON THE ASPHALT IN FRONT OF ME.

The trouble with the maples

(And they're quite convinced they're right)

They say the oaks are just too lofty

And they grab up all the light

But the oaks can't help their feelings

If they like the way they're made

And they wonder why the maples

Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest

And the creatures all have fled

As the maples scream, "Oppression"

And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union

And demanded equal rights

They say, "The oaks are just too greedy

We will make them give us light"

Now there's no more oak oppression

For they passed a noble law

And the trees are all kept equal

By hatchet, axe, and saw

Switchers on Saturday. On the "Redbud" trip I convinced Marson and Short to take me to the Alexander RR. It was my 3rd attempt at getting a green unit as they also have a pair of dip black turds that of course they hurled my way the 1st two times I was here. After securing a few cups of Java in Taylorsville I was greatly relieved they had this unit pulled out of the enginehouse and idling. You see, during the drive here my two travel mates were laying it on pretty thick that they had already shot one of the two green units.

Here the crew has made a move on an empty box car coming out of the Pratt Industries spur and is heading back to the main. Pratt Industries is America’s 5th largest corrugated packaging company and the world’s largest, privately-held producer of 100% recycled containerboard. Alexander rosters four SW1500s with three of Southern Pacific origins and this here 11 was built for Weyerhauser Timber as their number 307.

"They" have convinced us that our life has a predetermined path

(by whom?) and and only one way to go…

A single path is not the default way

It is not the only one in front of us

Choosing it will take us elsewhere

There is no “the right” path

All paths are safe and unsafe

Choosing will change our destiny

Because once we have started the journey back we cannot

We can go back

But who can say wrong or right?

The Universe moves beyond us and with us...

After a day of sightseeing in Bukhara I convinced my wife to "take a break" and come and try our luck at catching a train on the outskirts of the city. 2 hours of waiting and a 2TE116 and a rather cute AS1A from the wrong way a glorious sound could be heard of something loud and heavy. A few minutes later we started seeing dark smoke coming along and then a couple of minutes later a lovely 2TE10M doing it's bit for the environment rolled into view. A good finish to a days sightseeing!

2TE10M-1151, which was formally 4TE10M-1151 heads west with a mixed freight. This line that the train is on has now been electrified however if it is energised I aren't sure. The line on the right breaks off just behind where I took the photo and heads down to Turkmenistan. From my understanding it's not a busy line however the tracks were silver suggesting maybe a few trains a week.

I was convinced that this owl would not fly when I approached for a perched shot with a prime lens, but he fooled me. I was too close for a shot with full wing extension but fortunately got this one.
