Spring has officially come to Utah!
Taken with further practice on an Olympus Tough TG-6.
While I certainly wouldn't trade in my DSLR for the "grand" landscapes I seriously prefer shooting the most, there have been gaps in my ability to do photography I've been meaning to fill. Having a durable point and shoot I can practically carry on a trail run is one example. Also, anyone who has followed me for some time knows I sometimes travel in challenging terrain where a heavy, bulky camera could be dangerous under certain conditions. Finally, I have wanted to respond a little more quickly at times to wildlife, though granted that isn't usually my top emphasis. But hey: When it's good it's good! ;-) I'm learning a bit about this right now, and just having some fun too... This time of year it feels like all sorts of opportunities are ahead. I could do anything anytime!

As soon as I saw this image, the idea of black/white popped quickly into my head. So here it is out of my head. For those colorists, the original is in comments. So easy to change anything nowadays, no?

Did you enjoy the snow? I know it can be frustrating being around this much snow but it can also be very interesting. We spent last few days running around chasing snow and I got exhausted, so much that I needed 2 days to get back in the mood to edit some of these images. What do you think?
This shot was done by using a plastic holder for remote controllers, placed it side way against a glass table, place the audio cable in it, shone a LED light on the top to create that flare on table.
End result not that bad with reflections that added some interestingness in the shot.
In a valley flanked by towering mountains in northeastern Turkey stand the majestic ruins of the tenth-century Georgian monastery of Oshki. One of the most important monastic churches of the period and region, it was built during the reign of David III Kuropalates, the ruler of Tao-Klarjeti and an ally of the Byzantine Emperor. The church follows a Latin cross plan, with triconch ends on three arms, and is crowned by a high conical dome. Its monumentality speaks to the flourishing of medieval Georgia at the time of its erection, and its remains serve as a chronicle of history: the exterior of the building is covered with inscriptions about the patrons and builders of the church. In the sixteenth century this region was absorbed by the Ottoman Empire and its many monasteries were forsaken. For a time, Oshki was used as a mosque after the conversion of the local population to Islam, but was eventually abandoned. This 1,000-year-old monument has suffered heavily from prolonged neglect. Over time, large areas of the vaults have collapsed, and today many parts of the monument are in an alarming condition.
Following negotiations between the Turkish and Georgian sides, it was decided that the Oshki Cathedral will be restored. Turkey has begun the restoration process, surrounded the temple with a fence, but currently the restoration work has been stopped.

Seeing a sign for a cemetery, and wanting to get out and stretch my legs, I turned down a dirt lane. It was a bit further than planned, but eventually I came upon an old church with a nearby graveyard. More on this to come.

The early morning winter's sun illuminates the boats on the Looe River as well as the houses on the riverside at West Looe in Cornwall. This was once a separate town based around the bottom of West Looe Hill, but is now part of Looe itself. The main settlement of East Looe is on the opposite bank of the river and was formerly an important port for the export of tin and copper ore and the importing of coal, limestone and general goods. But by the end of the 19th century the mining industry was in decline and with the building of a new railway station and the conversion of a goods line to take passengers Looe became a popular seaside resort. The old 19th century warehouses have now been converted into residential and retail premises.
A trio of widecabs bring 203 south right on the heels on 11R. The DC-to-AC conversions were in their infancy at this time, so Dash 9s in their original paint were still ubiquitous out here.

There is always a risk involved when you convert your camera. I must say that my attempt to turn this old Leica into a Safari Camera had rather mixed results. True, it looks good, but it is terribly difficult to convince the elephants to keep still. Perhaps I should have just painted camera body and lens green? Disclaimer: this image has been sponsored by CSVPG (Common Sense Versus Photographic Gimmicks). Fuji X-Pro1 plus Samyang telephoto lens (mirror) fixed at F6.3.
Due to the rather monochrome appearence, I tried black and white conversion via the channel mixer in Photoshop too but finally found the coloured version to be more convincing. Enhancement of contrast was additionaly done via an individual gradation curve in a layer.

A conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used a Titanium Toner and the worked with color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image on this overcast and rainy day.

Nick, a friend of many years, runs a fishing holiday business in a South Devon village.
He has just purchased a disused chapel next to his house and made a magnificent job of converting it into a fishing lodge. This is the living/dining area . Quite stunning!!
"Búðakirkja is a small wooden church located on the south side of Snæfellsnes Peninsula- Iceland.
It is a local parish church that was first established in 1703 but the current church was built in1848.
The church is known for its beauty, both the building itself and in contact with the surrounding area.
The church is still used to this day, both for traditional church events for the parish, but also for other events like destination weddings, music events, and storytelling to name a few."
It was locked when we were there. Many original estates have their own churches so they pop up all over the countryside , not just in the towns.
The history of how Christianity was brought to Iceland in 999 is very interesting as was the conversion, with only a little bloodshed, from Catholicism to Lutheranism, also. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Christianity_in_Iceland
At this stage at the start of my tour I was starting to feel a bit sick with what turned out to be a sore throat and cough which plagued me whilst in Iceland.
One of the wonderful things about having a tour guide is that they can have a wonderful store of stories and understanding of the culture. Our Guide, Heidrun was born in Iceland and understood the culture, sagas, legends and landform intimately. She was an excellent guide.
