I AM MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS
No, you are made with SOME recycled material. Paper bags can be made from 100% recycled materials, and can use both post-consumer as well as post-industrial content. These plastic bags can't use post-consumer content, so discarded bags that litter the roadsides can not be recycled this way.
I REDUCE ROAD TRAFFIC
Who cares how many trucks it takes to carry bags? Since plastic bags are mostly made in China and paper bags are made in the USA, more total energy is going into transporting the plastic bags all the way to this country, regardless of their actual size. Also, trucks that deliver bags to grocery stores typically carry other goods as well, so the size difference of the bags is not likely to make any measurable difference in overall truck shipments.
I'M CLEANER
No, you're dirtier, because you trash our living environment.
While the pollutants from paper bag production {might} be higher on a per unit basis, discarded plastic bags cause more pollution in the environment then paper bags, which can biodegrade. Only some of these plastic bags can degrade on their own. Landfills are clogged with non-degradable plastic bags. Our oceans are literally "trashed" with floating plastic. Paper bags in landfills will biodegrade back to their basic elements.
Also take a look in any large town or city at all the plastic bags that have been blown up and snagged in trees. You don't hear the plastic bag industry demonstrating any leadership on this issue of environmental blight.
I USE LESS ENERGY
Again, while technically less energy may be used to produce one plastic bag, a paper bag is sturdier, and can be used more then once. Once you are done with it, paper can be more easily recycled or it will just biodegrade into the environment. Once you add up all the re-uses for paper, producing a plastic bag that will be used only once is the more wasteful option.
I HELP SAVE TREES
So what? Trees are a renewable resource. Petroleum, which plastic is made from, isn't. They can grow more trees. They can also recycle paper very easily. Every recycled paper bag also "saves" a tree. So no advantage for plastic here, either.
I HELP IN LANDFILLS
How? Do the plastic bags walk around and manually sort plastic into degradable and non-degradable piles? Guess not, huh?
It doesn't matter how much more space the paper bags take up in the landfill because 100% OF ALL PAPER BAGS WILL BIODEGRADE. No matter what the plastics industry says, the MAJORITY of plastic in landfills will either never bio-degrade, or will takes centuries to do it.
Why do you think landfills everywhere are running out of room? Too much plastic!!!
100% DEGRADABLE
Nice try, EPI-Global.com. (By the way, we love your little corporate logo with the flower in it. How "green" of you.) But nowhere on your oh-so-informative website does it guarantee that the plastic bags, even when treated with your magic ingredient, will 100% bio-degrade. Only under "certain conditions" will the plastic degrade into various components. And we bet those conditions will never exist in the bottom of a jam-packed urban landfill.
The plastics people tried this 'plastic will degrade' scam on us before with cornstarch added to plastic bags. You don't see that much anymore. Probably because they didn't. And there is no good reason to believe the EPI product will make them degrade either.
The only answer if you want to reduce waste in the landfills, and crappy plastic bags blowing up into trees, vacant lots, and people's yards, is to use paper bags, or use a re-usable canvas tote when you go to the store.
It's not a sexy high-tech solution to the problem, just a matter of John and Jane Public changing their buying habits.
