Description of the District

The Durand-Markland Heritage Conservation District runs along Markland Street and includes Park Street and MacNab Street between Markland Street and Herkimer. Chilton Place is also included.

The Durand-Markland Heritage Conservation District is found in the City of Hamilton and consists of 51 residential properties.

Cultural Heritage Value of the District

The Heritage Conservation District Plan describes the heritage character as:

“Although a few residents were built in the 1850s and 1860s, the Durand-Markland study area is characterized by a predominance of late nineteenth century to early twentieth century building construction. There is a range and diversity of structures from small, vernacular worker’s cottages to large classically detailed houses of the upper middle class.

The most prominent architectural styles are nineteenth century Italianate (1850-1900), and Queen Anne (1880-1910), and twentieth century Tudor Revival (1900-1930s) Examples of such architectural styles as Second Empire (1860-1880), Colonial Revival (1900-present), Edwardian Classicism (1900-1930), and four-square (1900-1930) are also represented in the district ”.

It goes on to state:

“The distinctive architectural features of the area are its scale, mass, decorative detailing and building sitting. Remarkably few individual buildings and properties have been extensively altered or subdivided over time due to changing tastes, economics and fashion The overall nineteenth century residential character coupled with a distinctive treeline and canopied streetscapes have generally been retained and occasionally enhanced”.

Designation of the District

The designation of Durand-Markland was initiated by local residents. Unterman McPhail Cumming Associates Heritage Conservation and Planning Consultants and Wendy Shearer Landscape Architect Limited completed the plan in 1994 for the City of Hamilton.

The Durand-Markland Heritage Conservation District is protected by By-law 94-184, which was passed in 1994 by the City of Hamilton.

NAHLIN seen at Sandon Dock Liverpool after whilst up for sale following her repatriation from Romania.

At the time the yacht brokers were very unhappy about photographs being taken of the vessel and myself and other enthusiasts were chased away despite holding Photographic Passes issued by the dock company.

Fortunately on August 08, 2003 members of the Merseyside Branch of the World Ship Society were taken on a cruise around Liverpool Docks on board the pollution control vessel POLGARTH from which this photograph was taken and with water between us and the resident security!

Click here for more photographs of the NAHLIN: www.jhluxton.com/Shipping/Historic-Ships/NAHLIN

NAHLIN is one of the last three large steam yachts to be constructed in the UK. Built for Lady Yule [Annie Henrietta] a jute millionairess and widow the NAHLIN carried a crew of 58. Her first appearance was at Cowes Week, August 1930. She had been designed by G.L. Watson & Company and built by John Brown & Company of Glasgow.

The vessel was originally furnished with six en-suite staterooms for guests, ladies sitting room with sea views on three sides and a library.

In 1936 NAHLIN was chartered by the "Duke of Lancaster" who was King Edward VIII and used by him in the company of Mrs. Wallace Simpson during their love affair.

NAHLIN was purchased by the Romanian government in 1937 for the sum of £120,000. The yacht was renamed LUCEAFARUL [The Evening Star] by King Carol who also had the vessel’s gymnasium replaced by a stateroom.

Following King Carol's abdication, she remained the property of the Romanian Government and survived the years of Communist rule serving as a passenger ship and latterly as a restaurant on the River Danube. The ship was renamed LIBERTATEA [Freedom] in 1948.

In the latter part of 1999, the yacht was shipped to the UK aboard the Dockwise Heavy Lift Ship SWIFT.

When LIBERTATEA arrived in the UK she was laid up at DML's Devonport Dockyard and remained there until the end of April 2000. She was brought to Liverpool and arrived on May 3, 2003, being berthed at the then Cammell Laird owned Clarence Dry Docks adjacent to Stanley Dock where she was expected to undergo the initial phase of what was expected to be a $35million dollar restoration.

In October 2000 G.L. Watson & Company the yacht's original designers were appointed as special consultants to the restoration being supervised by Yachtworks Ltd.

LIBERTATEA was removed from the Clarence Dry Docks around July 23, 2001, to a berth in Sandon Dock. Since her arrival G.L. Watson's sister company, Yachtworks, have removed over 450 tones of asbestos insulation, heavy fuel oil and debris and the interior surveyed. The ship was given her original name NAHLIN and port of registry – Glasgow whilst at Liverpool.

On July 27, 2005 NAHLIN was loaded aboard the heavy lift ship CONDOCK V at Liverpool and taken to Rendsburg it was reported she had be bought by German interests.

It later transpired the purchaser was businessman Anthony Bamford of JCB digger fame. Her refit was continued in Germany.

As refitted, she has berths for 14 passengers and up to 47 crew. She was then taken to Hamburg, where Blohm+Voss replaced her steam turbines with a new diesel-electric powertrain. MTU Friedrichshafen supplied a pair of 16-cylinder diesel engines, each of which is rated at 2,502 bhp (1,866 kW). They drive a pair of electric generators, which in turn drive a pair of electric motors, one powering each propeller. Each electric motor is rated at 2,000 kW (2,700 hp).

During restoration, the ship’s original mahogany-hulled 6.4 m (21 ft) ship-to-shore tender, believed lost for 60 years, was found in Scotland, having been fully restored by owner Willie McCullough. It has now been reunited with the yacht.

In 2006 Inventor and entrepreneur Sir James and Lady Dyson acquired the yacht from Anthony Bamford.

In 2010 NAHLIN returned to service.

Most people mistake professional business consultancy as a troubleshooting exercise that a company undertakes to manage crisis. Even the business owners, especially the small and relatively inexperienced ones, have similar notions and avail of their services only in cases where management looses control. However, services offered by professional consultants need not be bound by such limitations. Business consultants, in fact, are third party experts who influence how businesses, as well as governments and institutions make decisions.

Irish pubs feature prominently in James Joyce's "Ulysses", and it is true that wherever the Irish have gone in the world they have set up places of conviviality. The Irish impact on the colony of Van Diemen's Land came initially with the arrival of the convicts. Many of the Irish convicts were in fact political prisoners, and almost all of them were Catholics.

This Irish pub, which is now known as "The Irish" with the slogan "Drinking Consultants", was founded in 1835 as "The Hibernian" by freed convict Josiah Pitcher. Of course the current building, with its Art Deco influences, dates from around 100 years after that.

The Hong Kong Port connects to the HZMB from a site with approximately 130 hectares of reclaimed land. The port’s Passenger Clearance Building (PCB) is iconic, with aesthetically striking architecture. Its long span curved roof mimics the surrounding sea and offers unobstructed views. Its skylights filter natural light to minimize power usage for the whole building. Tree-like columns support the roof and provide an airy feel inside.

Given the project’s proximity to the airport, our team had to overcome airport height restrictions and limited space onsite, together with the mandate to complete the PCB in 30 months whilst the whole Port was to be completed in about four years. The design and construction of the PCB roof were the most notable innovations to meet these challenges.

Its key features include:

•The integration of BIM and 3D scanning. In 2014, the use of digitalization in civil engineering was still in its infancy in Hong Kong. By overlaying the complex roof design and as erected models, any out of tolerance areas could be readily identified and rectified.

•Pre-fabrication of a total of 81 roof segments, with all necessary fittings and building services including pre-installed MEP completed offsite, form the roof that stretches to the size of nine FIFA football pitches. The largest segment measures 61 meters x 25 meters and weighs 680 tons and remains the largest and heaviest spatial structural frame for a building as of 2022.

•First ever use of installation by vertical lifting and then horizontal jacking of this scale in Hong Kong. This not only overcame the space and height limitations but also allowed parallel construction of the concrete works below to accelerate project time. On-site safety was also enhanced by the subsequent reduction in the need for working at height.

Since then, innovative construction methods, including Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and MiMEP, inspired by Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) have become important elements in Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Sustainable features at the Port such as the District Cooling System, and the use of treated effluent from the onsite tertiary sewage treatment plant for toilet flushing helped earn the project two platinum and one gold BEAM Plus awards.

The port also contains other associated infrastructure and auxiliary facilities, such as:

•Cargo clearance facilities

•Road network

•Transit interchange

•Traffic control surveillance system

•Accommodations for frontline departments such as Immigration and Customs and Excise

Awards and Recognition:

•HKIE Grand Award 2023 – Grand Prize (Infrastructure Category)

•Hong Kong Green Building Council BEAM Plus Award 2020 – Platinum

•The Lighthouse Club Safety Leadership Awards 2016 – Gold (Architect-Consultant Category)

Abandoned Mental Asylum

Caputh was first mentioned in a document in 1317. Compared to the development of neighbouring villages, it is therefore conceivable that a sacred building was also erected in Caputh in the 14th century. However, there are no confirmed findings on this so far. What is certain is that in 1820 there was a building that had become dilapidated. As the number of inhabitants grew, the parish supported a new building, which was erected between 1850 and 1852 according to a design by Friedrich August Stüler, Architecture Consultant of King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. The church furnishings are uniformly from the construction period and were influenced by the king. The baptismal font from around 1840 was made of porcelain in the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur in Berlin according to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Two neo-Classical chandeliers with rope wheel suspension belong to the further equipment.

There are several meanings of the word 'baller' although in this instance it probably relates to the sporting world. Used by younger fans, baller is a fairly recent arrival in British football terminology. It seems to have come from basketball in America where it is used to describe great players.

I had to ask my personal consultant on all things American as to what Subway were advertising. Answer : A meatball sub!

Americans have lost confidence in their government. We no longer trust our legislators and the Supreme Court to solve our country’s problems: income inequality, affordable health care, a woman's right to decide what’s best for her health, the economy, and climate change. Governance has become a series of battles. It’s no longer just political ideology. We are at war over cultural issues while our politicians ignore our basic needs.

The morals of our GOP legislators and their sycophants are just as important as their economic policy. How can we trust a party that Alex Patton, a Florida-based Republican consultant and pollster, has characterized as a party that “has become mean and driven by emotion on whom we dislike.”? “But,” he says, “that is the driving force in American politics right now.” That is the driving force of the GOP, not the Democrats. This is not an example of the equality of "bothsidesism."

In my essay, “It’s Time to Release Our Own Kraken!” I outlined the history of the Republican Party’s “below the belt” tactics. They continue to be underhanded to this day. But with the low level of civility in our present polarized country, many Republican legislators now in office have hit new ethical lows.

As a visual artist who has spent over a decade creating posters about the sorry state of American political discourse, this year I began a new series of portraits, “Faces of the Republican Party.” The men and women in this series deserve to be taken to task for their unwillingness to compromise, belief in conspiracy theories, and disdain for the LGBTQ+ community, women’s rights, and our children’s education. The purpose of our government is to solve our nation’s problems. It’s not a place for personal vendettas or manufactured cultural issues.

“Faces of the Republican Party” is not a partisan series of portraits. Merriam-Webster defines the word as “a firm adherent to a party, faction, cause, or person, especially one exhibiting blind, prejudiced, and unreasoning allegiance.” The people depicted in these images are the partisans. Instead, my series is a documentary and op-ed showcasing the facts in 2022. All of these people had a hand in trying to overthrow the government. These images are MAGA Republicans who put their blind allegiance to Donald Trump and their careers ahead of the needs of the American people.

The results of the 2022 midterm elections showed we are tired of autocratic and self-absorbed politicians. We would simply like our officials to do the jobs we elected them to do. Everyone deserves a piece of American Exceptionalism. As it stands, there is nothing exceptional about the tribalism these people promote.

Republicans are perfect examples of Patton’s “driving force.” This force is dirty, mean, misogynistic, selfish, and wastes our tax dollars. These people are just a small sampling of individuals responsible for the loss of credibility and faith in America’s institutions. And worse, they couldn’t care less.
