Cushendun (from Irish Cois Abhann Duinne, meaning 'beside the River Dun') is a small coastal village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It sits off the A2 coast road between Cushendall and Ballycastle. It has a sheltered harbour and lies at the mouth of the River Dun and Glendun, one of the nine Glens of Antrim. The Mull of Kintyre in Scotland is only about 15 miles away across the North Channel and can be seen easily on clear days. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 138 people.

It is part of Causeway Coast and Glens district.

The nearby hamlet of Knocknacarry is located approximately 0.6 miles to the west.

Cushendun village, was designed for Ronald McNeill, the Conservative MP and author later Lord Cushendun in the style of a Cornish village by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis. He is buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard near his nationalist cousin Ada or Ide McNeill, Roger Casement's friend and admirer who died in 1959.

Since 1954 most of the village and the parkland around Glenmona to the north has been owned by the National Trust. Cushendun's picturesque coastal setting in the heart of the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, together with its architectural inheritance, resulted in designation as a Conservation area in 1980.

The nearby caves of Cushendun have been used as backdrop in the series Game of Thrones.

The Big Story

Conservative group pushes ACA tax credits

As lawmakers in the House struggle over potential deep cuts to Medicaid, a conservative group is pitching an extension of ObamaCare subsidies to blunt the coverage impact on the public and the political blowback to lawmakers.

Plymouth Union Public Advocacy (PUP Advocacy) — founded by former heads of the Republican Governors Association, Republican State Leadership Committee and Republican Attorneys General Association — said in a new memo shared first with The Hill that extending the subsidies while also cutting Medicaid spending through reconciliation could be the key to political success.

“Cutting Medicaid is unpopular, could jeopardize the GOP’s chances in the midterms, and could derail President Trump’s agenda during his final two years in office,” the group wrote. “Congress should use the same reconciliation process to extend the enhanced tax credit.”

Extending the enhanced tax credits is a “free-market policy position” that could save upwards of $540 billion if paired with the Medicaid cuts already under consideration, the group argued. Unlike Medicaid, the tax credits allow people to buy insurance on the private market.

The Congressional Budget Office said permanently extending the subsidies, which come in the form of tax credits, would cost $335 billion over the next 10 years. Republicans have balked at the cost, arguing the credits hide the true cost of the health law and subsidize Americans who don’t need the help.

Extending the subsidies permanently has been a key Democratic priority, while Republicans have been hesitant, at best, to back the effort.

But the group cited polling conducted in February by President Trump’s pollster Tony Fabrizio that found extending tax credits was supported by four out of five swing district voters, and it ranked as a top vote mover for them to vote for a Republican candidate.

The survey also found that 78 percent of Trump voters supported extending the health care premium tax credits.

Millions of enrollees have come to rely on the enhanced subsidies, and they’ve helped boost health insurance enrollment to record levels.

My name is Homer Simpson.....My name is Homer Simpson.....My name is Homer Simpson. Will the real Homer Simpson please register to vote! The Obama administration has repeatedly said that Americans are too stupid to understand issues. They liken us to Homer Simpson (I'm honored). However, I do understand the issues and won't be bought off by a doughnut. I'm registered to vote and the liberals are O-U-T!

I'm Homer Simpson and I approved this message!

Please fave this photo so it can make explore and reach many more people for support of this plight.

This protest is from a group that runs a program to help addicts have a clean and safe environment for injection. It is the only one of the four pillars approach that has been implemented. It saves lives by giving the addict a clean place to shoot up and less risk of overdose as they have nurses that monitor the users. They have prevented many deaths and therefore a savings on the medical system.

The Conservative government had the RCMP raid their site in the morning for no apparent reason. This gov't says they want to help addicts and yet they want to cut funding of this unique site.

I personally don't condone injectible drugs, but it is not my place to judges those who do for they are not all in that position by choice. I think prevention and detention are not a cure totally. There has to be a sustainable effort to treat and support people who live in the poorest district of this country. The lower standard of living makes drugs more of an escape with no positive outcome. This is only one program that a right wing government feels is not an issue during an election. There are many more issues affecting the poor that have only been discussed by the parties vying to prove they are for the people and not just big business.

Let's hope this election creates a new direction for the people who fly under the radar of politcal hiearchy and gets acknowledgement for support and funding.

Gee, which society is really the one that's behind?

I think appearances can be very deceiving.

The way we were.

I finally figured out this difference after talking to so many different people when the reign of Trump occurred and gauged their reactions. We've all been told there are major issues like abortion, immigration, health care, education...

But, I figured it out...the only real difference between a liberal and a conservative is that a conservative only reacts, votes, and advocates along certain lines when an issue directly effects them...so, the woman that votes for Trump even though her husband and father of her 4 kids is an illegal immigrant and then gets outraged when he's deported...or the many Americans who will get outraged when/if Trump completely defunds Obamacare and they are left with nothing...they don't think on the "we" basis. They think only about the "me."

But a liberal, a liberal cares when anything negatively impacts a member of our community. Because, we see the connection..it's not just about human rights we're talking about here, although plenty of liberals care about that. But, what I'm saying is that liberals understand their place in the world in a more holistic sense. We realize that if a member of the community, whether it is a Black man wrongfully killed by police or a an anti-Muslim ICE raid that leads to a harmful deportation and disruption of family lives, this negatively impacts the quality of life of everyone in the community and we cannot ignore it. A liberal realizes that all humans should be honored based on the identity they choose vs. the one they happen to be born with even if we ourselves are heterosexual because it makes for a more accepting world. A liberal realizes we need to invest in climate change solutions before we're actually under a rising sea level. A liberal realizes putting guns in the hands of people who are mentally ill so easily without any background checks is a detriment to the safety of all.

I realize liberals have gotten a bad name in some circles and media outlets...and, it's not hard to see why...we live in a self centered world where profit is a god and many conservatives all out for themselves are both unhappy and rich. They own so many more major media outlets and they control the message. But, let's be clear, money doesn't buy you happiness...being part of a community does bring happiness and increase your quality of life. And, if more people thought about the community aspect..more about the we and less about the I...the world would be a much better shared safe space for us to live in.

Just ask Denmark, the famous masters of hygge or happiness. They care more about the we. They make sure all people have some basic protections. And, though they seem fond of burning a bunch of candles around wooden furniture, they still have much fewer fatalities.
