Assumption Cathedral on the right and Annunciation Cathedral on the left....The Assumption Cathedral is now the main temple of the Moscow Kremlin, and in the XV-XIX centuries it was the main Orthodox church of the Russian state. All Russian tsars were crowned here. Weddings and baptisms took place here. They prayed here before the military campaign. Metropolitans and patriarchs were elected here and buried here.....The Annunciation Cathedral ("the Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos that the Great Sovereign has above" or "on the porch") is an Orthodox church in Moscow, located on the Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin. Consecrated in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, it was the first house church of the Moscow grand dukes and tsars of the XVI century and the first tsar Mikhail Fedorovich before the construction of the Verkhospassky Cathedral......Golden domes shine,

Crowning temples exalted faces,

And years and centuries are reflected in them,

The stories are many-sided.

Golden domes are burning,

Casting off the sun 's glare,

Displaying as if in mirrors,

The harsh fate of a great country.

The difficult history of the Slavs,

Their knights on the battlefield scarlet tunics,

That they fought to the death keeping the motherland,

Defending Russia from the encroachments of the wild steppe.

From the hordes of foreign basurman,

With the sword of those who came to the boundless expanses,

And other quirky tyrants,

Creating ruin and strife.

But Russia did not disappear and did not dissolve

Within the infinite universe,

And preserved the memory for centuries

About the exploits of the great and conquests.

And the golden domes did not go out,

The exalted faces of the temples have not been erased,

And reflected in them as if in mirrors

The harsh history of a great country.

And there is no need to praise an already great country,

She will declare herself properly,

But no one should forget history,

And you don't need to take swords out of their scabbards either.

St Mary's is next to the coastal salt marshes. Domesday Book mentions it and a substantial part of the existing church dates to those times - the 11th Century.

Externally, the flint tower's tapering base is probably Saxon and is topped by a cylindrical Norman construction suggesting that it was completed after the Norman Conquest. St Mary's great attraction is its quaint Medieval 'spirelet' of lead coated timber frame. Outside view of tower and 'spirelet'

Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou (Greek: Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου; 29 March 1943 – 17 May 2022), known professionally as Vangelis (/væŋˈɡɛlɪs/ vang-GHEL-iss; Greek: Βαγγέλης), was a Greek musician, composer, songwriter and producer of electronic, progressive, ambient, and classical orchestral music. He was best known for his Academy Award-winning score to Chariots of Fire (1981), as well as for composing scores to the films Blade Runner (1982), Missing (1982), Antarctica (1983), The Bounty (1984), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and Alexander (2004), and for the use of his music in the 1980 PBS documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan.

Having had a career in music spanning over 50 years and having composed and performed more than 50 albums, Vangelis is considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of electronic music, and modern film music. He was known for using many electronic instruments in a fashion of a "one-man quasi-classical orchestra" composing and performing on the first take.

(from Wikipedia)

Blade Runner is my one of my all-time favorite movies, its soundtrack is spectacular. I guess almost of us have heard some of Vangelis' music sometimes and have felt something warm inside of us.

This is my tribute to him.

Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the mid-13th century when King Béla IV of Hungary moved the royal seat to Buda. During the same period, the castle of Esztergom was built on the site of ancient Roman castrum. It served not only as the royal residence until the 1241 (the Mongol invasion), but also as the center of the Hungarian state, religion, and Esztergom county.

After changing his residence to Budapest, Béla IV gave the palace and castle to the archbishop. Following these events, the castle was built and decorated by the bishops. The center of the king’s town, which was surrounded by walls, was still under royal authority. A number of different monasteries did return or settle in the religious center.

Meanwhile, the citizenry had been fighting to maintain and reclaim the rights of towns against the expansion of the church within the royal town. In the chaotic years after the fall of the House of Árpád, Esztergom suffered another calamity: in 1304, the forces of Wenceslaus II, the Czech king occupied and raided the castle. In the years to come, the castle was owned by several individuals: Róbert Károly and then Louis the Great patronized the town.

The Ottoman conquest of Mohács in 1526 brought a decline to the previously flourishing Esztergom as well. In the Battle of Mohács, the archbishop of Esztergom died. In the period between 1526 and 1543, when two rival kings reigned in Hungary, Esztergom was besieged six times. At times it was the forces of Ferdinand I or John Zápolya, at other times the Ottomans attacked. Finally, in 1530, Ferdinand I occupied the castle. He put foreign mercenaries in the castle, and sent the chapter and the bishopric to Nagyszombat and Pozsony.

However, in 1543 Sultan Suleiman I attacked the castle and took it. Esztergom became the centre of an Ottoman sanjak controlling several counties, and also a significant castle on the northwest border of the Ottoman Empire. In the 17th century Esztergom was besieged and conquered several times during the Ottoman-Habsburg Wars. Most of the buildings in the castle and the town that had been built in the Middle Ages were destroyed during this period, and there were only uninhabitable, smothered ruins to welcome the liberators.

In 1761 the bishopric regained control over the castle, where they started the preliminary processes of the reconstruction of the new religious center: the middle of the Várhegy (Castle Hill), the remains of Saint Stephen and Saint Adalbert churches were carried away to provide room for the new cathedral.

Bayeux Cathedral, also known as Cathedral of Our Lady of Bayeux (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux), is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Bayeux in Normandy, France. A national monument, it is the seat of the Bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux and was the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry. The cathedral is in the Norman-Romanesque architectural tradition.

The site is an ancient one and was once occupied by Roman sanctuaries. The present cathedral was consecrated on 14 July 1077 in the presence of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England. It was here that William may have forced Harold Godwinson to take the oath, the breaking of which led to the Norman conquest of England. Wikipedia

......................................................

I'll start by saying that this photographic story of mine has only been partially realized. The Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Messina) Good Friday procession was cancelled this year due to bad weather. The heavy rain, this is the explanation, could have seriously damaged the papier-mâché statues of the floats of the two components of the procession, that of Barcellona and that of Pozzo di Gotto. Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto is currently a single town, in the past they were separate, the historical memory of the two original villages has never completely merged, continuing to be reflected, almost like an ancient reflection, in the solemnity and distinction of the two historic Good Friday processions. Despite the fact that the photographic narrative is only half-finished, I still felt great satisfaction in taking these photographs. I was welcomed with great kindness and cordiality by those who represent "the Jews of Pozzo di Gotto" (mostly members of the historic La Spada family of Pozzo di Gotto). I truly thank them from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to take "behind the scenes" photographs in a welcoming home, where they had gathered for their preparations, especially dressing up, with their characteristic clothes and helmet-like headdresses. A brief introduction: for a few years, my nurse friend Antonio, originally from Pozzo di Gotto, had been telling me about the "double procession of Barcellona and Pozzo di Gotto," with figures present in the procession of Pozzo di Gotto that seem to recall characters of pre-Columbian, Mayan, Inca, or Aztec inspiration. Furthermore, the town was only called Barcellona in 1639. Sicily was then part of the Kingdom of Spain. The most widely accepted theory among historians suggests that the name "Barcellona" was given to it to honor the power of Spanish Barcelona. Therefore, hypothesizing a direct link between these customs and the Spanish conquistadors was highly suggestive. Furthermore, I have worked many shifts at the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto hospital, and I know the town at least in part. All this was more than enough to spark a deep interest in me! My "target" was aimed primarily at those commonly understood as "Jews," who are actually "Roman centurions," or guards of Christ's tomb, Roman soldiers who guard the Dead Christ; To understand the origins of these figures I'm about to describe, a concept must be introduced. Sicily has been dominated by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish. Those who succeeded previous rulers never completely erased what had existed before, so traditions were stratified and transformed. Instead of disappearing, each layer remains beneath the next. During Spanish rule, many Passion Plays were born. The "Roman-Jewish Soldiers" of Good Friday in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto are among the most complex and layered performances in all of Sicily. There is no single explanation, but rather a blend of religion, theater, Spanish history, and popular symbolism. The Roman-Jewish soldiers (of Pozzo di Gotto, but not only) are a symbolic figure who embodies the persecutors of Christ, the power that mocks and condemns, they are a ritual mask inserted into the Passion, extremely characteristic their helmet-headdress with long peacock feathers at the top, and rooster and turkey feathers at the bottom, the peacock is a symbol of vanity, arrogance, pride, the long feathers represent an ostentatious wealth and power, such long feathers belong to Baroque theatricality; the red color of their armor and cloaks is the color of condemnation and brutality, this color recalls blood and violence, passion (in the most dramatic sense), aggression; the Roman soldiers show themselves carrying "halberds", here it is clear how these soldiers are a popular reconstruction influenced by the Spanish domination in Sicily, the halberd was born in the late Middle Ages in Europe between the 15th and 17th centuries, also used by the Spanish armies; On their little finger they wear a handkerchief tied with a red ribbon, with multiple layers of meaning, identifying those who are part of the group of Jewish soldiers, and having a ceremonial appeal. The capovara wears a white collar called a "gorget" around his neck, originating from ancient Spanish fashion. In his hilt, he holds a broadsword, reminiscent of the ancient Spanish conquistadors. In short, we are not witnessing first-century Jerusalem, but the "Passion" reinterpreted in Spanish Sicily and transformed into a popular sacred theater.

This is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. Building began in 1209 but the Cathedral was not officially consecrated until 1326.It contains all the hallmarks of the great Fench cathedrals of the time. In 1570 following the Ottoman conquest of the city it was converted into a mosque .

Those of you familiar with 80’s ambient electronic music might appreciate the title’s nod to a track by Greek artist Vangelis, of whom I’ve been a fan since I watched the first Bladerunner movie in my teens. I might’ve played it once or twice while processing!

The peak in the background that the boss of the squadron (and friend) is passing in front of is Skollis, in southwestern Achaea, Peloponnese, a mountain popular with hikers and is approximately the same height above sea level as Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Wales & England.

I just about managed to frame a shot of one of the jets as they passed us, twisting backwards to shoot through a few heads!

Being near the ramp for this sunset flight, I couldn’t get close to the windows but I don’t think I did too bad with side-ons looking back at what I managed.

Continuing my 'Venice from up high' series...the view from the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore towards the Arsenale. from Wiki...

The Venetian Arsenal is a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together in the city of Venice in northern Italy. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic's naval power during the middle part of the second millennium AD. It was "one of the earliest large-scale industrial enterprises in history".

Construction of the Arsenal began around 1104, during Venice's republican era. It became the largest industrial complex in Europe prior to the Industrial Revolution, spanning an area of about 45 ha, or about fifteen percent of Venice. Surrounded by a 2 mile rampart, laborers and shipbuilders regularly worked within the Arsenal, building ships that sailed from the city's port. With high walls shielding the Arsenal from public view and guards protecting its perimeter, different areas of the Arsenal each produced a particular prefabricated ship part or other maritime implement, such as munitions, rope, and rigging. These parts could then be assembled into a ship in as little as one day. An exclusive forest owned by the Arsenal navy, in the Montello hills area of Veneto, provided the Arsenal's wood supply.

The Arsenal produced the majority of Venice's maritime trading vessels, which generated much of the city's economic wealth and power, lasting until the fall of the republic to Napoleon's conquest of the area in 1797. It is located in the Castello district of Venice, and it is now owned by the state.

Like much of England, the site of the New Forest was once deciduous woodland, recolonised by birch and eventually beech and oak after the withdrawal of the ice sheets starting around 12,000 years ago. Some areas were cleared for cultivation from the Bronze Age onwards; the poor quality of the soil in the New Forest meant that the cleared areas turned into heathland "waste", which may have been used even then as grazing land for horses.

There was still a significant amount of woodland in this part of Britain, but this was gradually reduced, particularly towards the end of the Middle Iron Age around 250–100 BC, and most importantly the 12th and 13th centuries, and of this essentially all that remains today is the New Forest.

There are around 250 round barrows within its boundaries, and scattered boiling mounds, and it also includes about 150 scheduled ancient monuments. One such barrow in particular may represent the only known inhumation burial of the Early Iron Age and the only known Hallstatt culture burial in Britain; however, the acidity of the soil means that bone very rarely survives.

Following Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain, according to Florence of Worcester (d. 1118), the area became the site of the Jutish kingdom of Ytene; this name was the genitive plural of Yt meaning "Jute", i.e. "of the Jutes". The Jutes were one of the early Anglo-Saxon tribal groups who colonised this area of southern Hampshire. The word ytene (or ettin) is also found locally as a synonym for giant, and features heavily in local folklore.

Following the Norman Conquest, the New Forest was proclaimed a royal forest, in about 1079, by William the Conqueror. It was used for royal hunts, mainly of deer. It was created at the expense of more than 20 small hamlets and isolated farmsteads; hence it was then 'new' as a single compact area.

The New Forest was first recorded as Nova Foresta in Domesday Book in 1086, where a section devoted to it is interpolated between lands of the king's thegns and the town of Southampton; it is the only forest that the book describes in detail. Twelfth-century chroniclers alleged that William had created the forest by evicting the inhabitants of 36 parishes, reducing a flourishing district to a wasteland; however, this account is thought dubious by most historians, as the poor soil in much of the area is believed to have been incapable of supporting large-scale agriculture, and significant areas appear to have always been uninhabited.

Two of William's sons died in the forest: Prince Richard sometime between 1069 and 1075, and King William II (William Rufus) in 1100. Local folklore asserted that this was punishment for the crimes committed by William when he created his New Forest; 17th-century writer Richard Blome provides exquisite detail:

In this County [Hantshire] is New-Forest, formerly called Ytene, being about 30 miles in compass; in which said tract William the Conqueror (for the making of the said Forest a harbour for Wild-beasts for his Game) caused 36 Parish Churches, with all the Houses thereto belonging, to be pulled down, and the poor Inhabitants left succourless of house or home. But this wicked act did not long go unpunished, for his Sons felt the smart thereof; Richard being blasted with a pestilent Air; Rufus shot through with an Arrow; and Henry his Grand-child, by Robert his eldest son, as he pursued his Game, was hanged among the boughs, and so dyed. This Forest at present affordeth great variety of Game, where his Majesty oft-times withdraws himself for his divertisement.

The reputed spot of Rufus's death is marked with a stone known as the Rufus Stone. John White, Bishop of Winchester, said of the forest:

From God and Saint King Rufus did Churches take, From Citizens town-court, and mercate place, From Farmer lands: New Forrest for to make, In Beaulew tract, where whiles the King in chase Pursues the hart, just vengeance comes apace, And King pursues. Tirrell him seing not, Unwares him flew with dint of arrow shot.

The common rights were confirmed by statute in 1698. The New Forest became a source of timber for the Royal Navy, and plantations were created in the 18th century for this purpose. In the Great Storm of 1703, about 4000 oak trees were lost.

The naval plantations encroached on the rights of the Commoners, but the Forest gained new protection under the New Forest Act 1877, which confirmed the historic rights of the Commoners and entrenched that the total of enclosures was henceforth not to exceed 65 km2 (25 sq mi) at any time. It also reconstituted the Court of Verderers as representatives of the Commoners (rather than the Crown).

As of 2005, roughly 90% of the New Forest is still owned by the Crown. The Crown lands have been managed by the Forestry Commission since 1923 and most of the Crown lands now fall inside the new National Park.

Felling of broadleaved trees, and their replacement by conifers, began during the First World War to meet the wartime demand for wood. Further encroachments were made during the Second World War. This process is today being reversed in places, with some plantations being returned to heathland or broadleaved woodland. Rhododendron remains a problem.

During the Second World War, an area of the forest, Ashley Range, was used as a bombing range. During 1941-1945, the Beaulieu, Hampshire Estate of Lord Montagu in the New Forest was the site of group B finishing schools for agents[18] operated by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) between 1941 and 1945. (One of the trainers was Kim Philby who was later found to be part of a spy ring passing information to the Soviets.) In 2005, a special exhibition was mounted at the Estate, with a video showing photographs from that era as well as voice recordings of former SOE trainers and agents.

Further New Forest Acts followed in 1949, 1964 and 1970. The New Forest became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1971, and was granted special status as the New Forest Heritage Area in 1985, with additional planning controls added in 1992. The New Forest was proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 1999, and it became a National Park in 2005.

With The Tower of London being built in 1078 this photo shows just under 950 years of London's 1,979 years of history. The Romans first settled in London in AD 47 or 1,979 years ago!

The iconic Tower of London, officially His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic citadel and castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which is separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded toward the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was initially a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new Norman ruling class. The castle was also used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard, Bishop of Durham) until 1952 (the Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times, and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public record office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of England. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II in the 17th century, the monarch would traditionally prepare for several nights at the Tower, and lead a procession from there to Westminster Abbey for their coronation. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower was in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century, the Princes in the Tower were housed at the castle when they mysteriously disappeared, presumed murdered. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle, its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery.

The zenith of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Elizabeth Throckmorton, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture and death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists and 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the world wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin and John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures.

In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired, and the castle reopened to the public. Today, the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower, operated by the Resident Governor of the Tower of London and Keeper of the Jewel House, and guarded by the Yeomen Warders, the property is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site.

St Michael’s Church

Situated in St. Michael’s Alley, Cornhill, London, EC3V 9DS

St Michael’s is a medieval church with pre-Norman Conquest foundation. It is believed that the church was in existence in the early 1130’s. However the medieval part was lost in the Great Fire of London (apart from the tower) and replaced with what is now the present building.

Some early history shows that the church was in possession of the Abbot and convent of Evesham until 1503 when it was settled on to the Drapers Company. A new tower was built in 1421. There were lodging for the choristers which were maintained by Sir John Rudstone, unfortunately these fell into decay after his death in 1530.

Some early folklore tells a story of an apparition ‘an ugly misshapen sight’ which appeared when the bell ringers were ringing in a storm. This caused them to faint, they later discovered scratch marks in the masonry. These became the ‘Devil’s Clawmarks’.

According to the Monuments of London (City), Sir Christopher Wren had the church completely rebuilt after the Great Fire at the cost of £4,686.10s,with the exception of the tower which was restored. In 1721 Wren also replaced the tower. Sir Nicolas Hawksmoor completed the upper stages of the tower.

More repairs in 1790. The church then went through further restoration work under Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1860. More work took place in 1868.

There many things to see inside St Michael’s, the reredos (altar screen) representing Aaron and Moses was painted by Robert Streater. Decoration over the main porch was by John Birnie Philip ‘St Michael disputing with Satan. Many of the columns are adorned with angels.

Stained glass by Clayton and Bell was installed. The Representation of Christ in the large circular East window to be admired. The organ originally built by Renatus Harris in 1684 but much altered and enlarged, last restoration 2011.

There is a First World War memorial outside the church, a statue of St Michael by Richard Reginald Goulden.

Fortunately the church escaped damage in WWII, it was designated Grade 1 listing in 1950. In 1960 the Victorian paintwork was replaced by a more subdued scheme of Gold, Blue and White. In 2011 a new set of 12 bells were installed in the tower cast by Taylors of Loughborough.

La Provence is named after the time of Roman rule after the first conquest of Gaul (between 58 and 51 BC) when it is integrated into the Roman province whose capital is Narbonne, Gaul Narbonense. So, Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars says move from province to Narbonnensisen when crossing the Rhone, which explains that from that time only the lands east of the river will be called Province.

Today the town of Tenby is a mix of old and new with the original castle walls dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest and the town walls to the 13th century.

During the middle ages the town had a thriving fishing industry but following the English Civil war the town went into decline and by the middle of the 18th Century it was in ruins and many of the houses were abandoned.

However, during the Victorian era many of the buildings we see today were refurbished and painted in a variety of pastel colours, this gives it a unique feel which attracts the many tourists to the town and it is these tourists that the town depends on for its prosperity today.

Modern Tenby depends on a thriving tourist industry
