This is a fibroblast, a connective tissue cell that plays an important role in wound healing. Normal fibroblasts, have smooth edges. In contrast, this spiky cell is missing a protein that is necessary for proper construction of the cell's skeleton. Its jagged shape makes it impossible for the cell to move normally. In addition to compromising wound healing, abnormal cell movement can lead to birth defects, faulty immune function and other health problems.

Spreading Awareness one of the ways I am able to...

 

September is Invisible Illness Awareness month,

And I bring to you, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

I've been working on this project for a while now, and let me be the first to say; YES it hurt very much, eventually, after taking 300 shots to get the right images...

 

Even though it "doesn't hurt" for me to bend my thumb all the way backwards, when your ligaments and tendons are this extremely lax it DOES cause wear and tear, and ultimately damage. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is more than just being "double jointed"... for me, mostly it involves exhaustion, subluxations, frequent injuries and pain.

 

After doing this shoot, I experienced an entire new kind of pain accompanied by my body saying, "WHOA, you should NOT be DOING THIS TO ME!"

 

EDS is a genetic disorder I looked-over many, many times in my research for "the answer to my problems"... And I did do a TON of research learning about all kinds of systemic disorders, including congenital and acquired genetic, gastrointestinal, endocrine, nervous system, cutaneous,... among several others in the process of learning what could be wrong with my body systems.

 

Only after reading up on and looking at pictures of various cutaneous (skin) conditions on August 14th, 2012 did I notice an image of a thumb bending all the way backwards, touching the forearm (LIKE ME!); and lo and behold, it was labelled as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with Hypermobility.

 

It was then I knew I was right about what was wrong in my life-- and learned that there is no cure at this point in time. I was diagnosed with EDS-III by a genetic specialist on November 5th, 2012.

The drawings were done with felt markers on a white board in the lab during the morning of the day a particular topic was being studied in the course. When the laboratory session began, the drawings were briefly discussed, and they could be seen by the students throughout the laboratory period.

Adipocytes are huge fat-storing cells which can be found in clumps or isolated in many supporting tissues. In adipose tissue they form the main cell type and each is surrounded by a thin extracellular material rich in blood vessels. In this micrograph, adipocytes are found in clumps (on the right - unstained) throughout loose connective tissue (on the left - collagen in green) supporting a stratified epithelium (red).

A couple of days ago my Maine Coon cat suddenly had one floppy ear. I took her to the vet but he said that it isn't really a problem and there is nothing they can do about it.

 

Seems like the connective tissue has become loose for some reason. Could have been due to a fight or touching an electric fence, but is not an infection or disease. Could come right over time.

 

Update: It is now 10 days later and is still floppy so may not ever come right.

 

Update: It took 3 weeks and it was back to normal!

Tissus conjonctifs lâche et dense. Le premier, visible ici au centre, est assez pauvre en fibres. La substance fondamentale y est abondante, mais elle apparaît sous forme de larges espaces incolores, car elle a été dissoute par les solvants lors du traitement de l’échantillon. La gauche

de l’image montre du conjonctif plutôt dense, plus riche en fibres et dont les noyaux des fibroblastes se distinguent aisément. Malgré des critères théoriques de différenciation assez précis, la distinction entre tissus conjonctifs lâches et denses n’est pas toujours aisée.

This micrograph illustrates loose (at the centre) and

dense (left) connective tissue. In the former the open

spaces between collagen fibers are filled with ground

substance which is not stained in this type of preparation due its dissolution during sample processing. In the dense part the fibroblast nuclei are clearly visible. Despite these criteria of differentiation, the distinction between loose and dense connective tissue is not always easy.

For decades, researchers have used the American bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, as a model for studying the physiology and biomechanics of skeletal muscles. Thanks to its disproportionately large skeletal muscles, this common amphibian has played a critical role in helping to build the knowledge base for understanding how these muscles work in other organisms, including humans.

Paroi abdominale de rat. L'animal a reçu une injection intrapéritonéale d'encre de Chine dans le but de mettre en évidence les macrophages (ici en brun) du tissu conjonctif dermique.

Les macrophages sont des globules blancs, d'ordinaire immobiles sauf en cas d'inflammation. Ils possèdent une activité phagocytaire, c-à-d que ces cellules sont capables d'englober des particules et des microorganismes, puis de les digérer. La phagocytose joue donc un rôle important dans les défenses de l’organisme contre des infections diverses. Les macrophages sont aussi des cellules qui présentent à leur surface des antigènes de corps étrangers qui vont stimuler la réponse immunitaire.

On distingue plusieurs types de macrophages, selon les tissus (conjonctifs, os, poumons, système nerveux central, foie ...) où ils se trouvent.

Rat abdominal skin. The animal received an intraperitoneal injection of Indian ink in order to highlight the macrophages (here in brown) in the dermis.

Macrophages are large white blood cells, with high phagocytic activity. They are usually immobile but become actively mobile when stimulated by inflammation. Their main function includes phagocytosis which is the process of ingestion and digestion of other cells, bacteria, foreign particles. So, phagocytosis plays a central role in defending the host from infection.

Macrophages are also the "professional" antigen-presenting cells to lymphocytes. In this way, they also stimulate the immune response.

These cells take different names according to their tissue (bones, lungs, brain, connective tissue, liver...) location.

Vue globale de la peau abdominale de rat (voir aussi M1a_006). Cette coupe met en évidence les tissus conjonctifs, tissus vascularisés, qui ont des rôles fondamentaux comme la jonction entre organes, le soutien de ces derniers et des épithéliums, mais aussi dans les liaisons métaboliques et les défenses de l'organisme... De haut en bas, on distingue le fin épiderme (en bleu) et sa kératine (en noir), le derme superficiel (large couche mauve), une couche importante de cellules graisseuses (adipocytes - incolores), le derme profond (couche au milieu de la micrographie et riche en cellules), à nouveau une couche d'adipocytes (incolores), et les larges faisceaux de muscles abdominaux (rose foncé) qui occupent le 1/4 inférieur de l'image.

They contain blood vessels and allow the exchanges between tissues and the circulatory system. They also play a role in the defense of the organism ...

From top to bottom, we can distinguish the thin epidermis (in blue) covered by keratin (in black), the superficial dermis (large purple layer), a thick layer of fat cells (adipocytes - unstained), the deep or reticular dermis (layer in the middle of the micrograph and rich in cells), again a layer of adipocytes (unstained) and the elongated fasciculi of abdominal muscles (dark pink - lower 1/4 of the image).
