Trek to the crater of Maderas Volcano
With a height of 1,394 m, Maderas is the smaller of the two volcanoes which make up the island of Ometepe, situated in Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua, Central America. Unlike Concepción, the other volcano on the island, Maderas has not been active in historical times. Its crater contains a crater lake.
The slopes of Maderas are one of the few places on the Pacific side of Nicaragua where cloud forest grows. The only other place where this is found is at the Mombacho volcano. Cloud forests are characterized by a rich plant and animal life, made possible by the high levels of humidity in the climate. Prehistoric petroglyphs have been found at the Maderas volcano.
The volcano is so tall that it support three different climatic zones. The upper reaches of the volcano are almost always ridden with mist and that nourishes the cloud forest with condensation.

In many of the manifestos Mangelos expounded his theories on the evolution of society and the nonevolution of art, or the crisis and death of art, ascribing it to the gap between two civilizations: manual and machine, the former based on the old "naïve and metaphorical thinking," and the latter on "functional thinking." Mangelos claimed that technology triggered changes that in turn canceled many of the disciplines associated with the old way of thinking - above all philosophy and art.
Mangelos was often playfully ironic in the formulation of his manifestos, in the contrast between the pretentiousness of the message and the banality of the sentence. Aware that his writing by no means reflected the precise, functional thinking he advocated, he tried to condense his information and present it as clearly and concisely as possible, in a super-Wittgensteinian manner. The brief manifestos written on globes appear to be conclusions of some of his theories ("the first machine is the first model of functional thinking"; "sein=nichts / anderssein=andernichts" ["to be = nothing, nothingness / to be different = different nothingness"]; "kitsch does not exist in art / kitsch is merely an instrument of negation of the value of feeling for another kind of beauty") or a summing up of his manifestos in a single important word such as energy, which he spelled out in various fonts.

As cheesy as this page might seem, it's one of my favorites in recent history. The story was about this local 14-year-old who moved to Hollywood to pursue her acting career. I wanted the page to look like a director's table, with headshots, photos and film spread across his or her desk. I also liked the font choices because that Gotham Condensed all caps looks like the Hollywood sign and the Serifa Black remind me of old-timey script fonts.
