There was a time when my family and I had an aquarium with 4 fish (one for each member of the family). My mother's fish was very conceited and his name was Nabucodonosor. My sister's was the prettiest. She was always the spoilt child of the house, that's why she could choose the most beautiful fish. His name was Nepomuceno. Mine had to be red, because I was always red of the "Reds" of Anfield, Liverpool and their a cappella song and sporting liturgy "You'll Never Walk Alone". He was an unruly, playful fish I called Nicéforo. And the one my father chose looked helpless and defenceless. He called him Norberto. He chose him because for my father all people deserved respect, but especially the most helpless and defenceless. He also picked up from the street an abandoned and defenceless cat that he also called Norberto. His fixation with this name has always caught my attention. It's strange that my parents didn't decide to call me... Norberto. Someone explained to us that fish have a memory of only a few seconds. Hence the phrase "you have less memory than a fish". But that's not true. Some fish can remember their predators for at least a year. Post-traumatic stress. One of the animals with the shortest memory are seals. Good thing we didn't decide to have four seals at home. The bathtub would have always been occupied. Since the fish didn't pay much attention to us, perhaps because of their lack of memory, we decided to shorten their names. Nabucodonosor became "Na", Nepomuceno "Ne", Nicéforo "Ni" and Norberto "No". They were the "NaNeNiNo". The cat was lucky... He kept his name and continued to be called Norberto. Little by little and one by one, the "NaNeNiNo" left our lives. Nicéforo was the last one. He was left alone in the aquarium / Forbidden City. He was its last tenant and emperor. He appeared one day on the surface with his body arched and lifeless. It was a very sad day for me. I had lost my little "Red", the last emperor of the "NaNeNiNo" dynasty, my little friend "You'll Never Walk Alone"... I lost Ni.
This picture is dedicated to my parents, my sister and the "NaNeNiNo". Well... I also dedicate it to Norberto the cat, although I suspect his feelings towards fish were different from the rest of the family. The aquarium was always dirty on the outside and with smudges of his nose and paws on the glass. Norberto, the cat, had no memory, he lived absolutely in the future, a future more tasty and succulent for him... When he watched the fish, his lower jaw collided with his upper jaw and his teeth began to "chatter". He would run his tongue along the glass of the aquarium, trying to catch one of the "NaNeNiNo".

PS: Parents almost always have solutions for all their children's problems. The loss of "Ni" was replaced by the arrival of a ten-day-old puppy dog, who, if not adopted, was going to be put down. Our particular jungle, which also included a parakeet called "Periquito" ("Parakeet"... It's strange that my father didn't call him Norberto) and two tortoises called Raquel Welch and Brigitte Bardot, was joined by a new member in the form of a puppy dog that we had to feed with hundreds of bottles. What I never understood, and I don't think I ever will understand, is why I named him... Música (Music).

Caught this girl in a moment of what looked like quiet reflection, and it got me wondering if such creatures actually think, they say for every idea conceived somewhere else it exists. It also took me back to the rhetorical question from the movie the Fly (1986) when Brundle asks, "Have you ever heard of insect politics?! Neither have I." As later explained insects do not have politics but therein lies just how much worse the human thinking is, we have politics and still are brutal, but have a conceited and externalising sociopolitical excuse to pardon ourselves or blame others whilst remaining so appalled at the way natural predators behave. Is it little wonder that so many people prefer the company of animals and not other people?!

Κατά την βυζαντινή εποχή η Καπερναούμ ήταν αναγνωρισμένη ως εκ των σπουδαιότερων χριστιανικών προσκυνηματικών κέντρων γιατί συνδέονταν στενά με τα γεγονότα της Καινής Διαθήκης. Μετά την αραβική κατάκτηση της Αγίας Γης, η Καπερναούμ άρχισε να παρακμάζει και τον 11ον αιώνα κατεστράφη από σεισμό και έκτοτε εγκαταλείφθηκε οριστικά. Much like the Atlantic, the Alps have my heart. Not just for the skiing and trekking, but for the sheer serenity the scenery always brings me. There's something about the massive trees and the absolutely gargantuan landscape that helps me reset and recalibrate.

I sometimes wonder whether the folks at Nikon wish that I would stop posting photos.* Other people take such beautiful pictures with the same camera that I have, except mine are out focus, badly composed, and incorrectly exposed. I can't be making their camera look good.

I am often shocked by how unrecognizable I am to myself. This is me, but it doesn't look like me. Does that mean that I wish I could be someone else? I don't know. But I do know that I am a beautiful person. No matter how much I beat myself up or put myself down, I can't help but look at this picture and see a beautiful woman. Fortune is unreliable. A man may rest in her arms, but only a fool would place his trust in her. Although she is inconsistent, greedy men chase after her. She is a mistress, unfaithful from the beginning. If a man truly possessed Fortune, he could never lose her. Many seek Fortune, but in death, she will desert them. Her beauty is deceptive, her allure is sweet, yet she is bound to no one. She has made no vows to anyone. Men lust after her, though she never truly satisfies. What she gives is never enough to satisfy. Man, in his void, longs for more.
If Fortune is fleeting, then she is a warning of what is to come. Wisdom, on the other hand, calculates the outcome of matters. In spite of this, many have divorced wisdom. They have been seduced by Fortune. Yet Fortune, in her very essence, cannot bring true happiness. She will desert her lovers in the end. Those who become infatuated with her will suffer from the blindness of ignorance. If Fortune pursues those who are greedy, then is she really worth pursuing? Is she really trust worthy? Does Fortune turn bad men into good men? What constitutes a good man? If a man has broken one of God’s laws, is he a good man? Those who seek fame are really seeking a kind of immortality. They want to leave a legacy, they want to be remembered. Many who seek Fortune also pursue fame and popularity. Many become shallow and conceited, forsaking virtue and a good conscience. Fame cannot lengthen a man’s life.
Fortune, on the other hand, has two sides: Good Fortune and Bad Fortune. Good Fortune can be good, if a man is not deceived by her. Good Fortune can be good, if a man does not trust her. Bad Fortune can give a man an opportunity to reflect, to learn, and to grow. Bad Fortune reveals that she is untrustworthy and unreliable. Good Fortune, by contrast, brings pleasure; thus, she hides the fact that she is untrustworthy and unreliable. Good Fortune enslaves the minds of those who enjoy her. Bad Fortune reveals that happiness is fragile. She reveals that life is frail. Adversity can make a man wiser. Adversity can cause a man to mature. Bad Fortune gives a sober picture of reality. A fool will learn little from adversity. He will continue down the path of folly. Good Fortune frequently lures men away from the good path. Bad Fortune can humble a man, causing him to turn back to the straight and narrow. Bad Fortune reveals a man’s true friends, while Good Fortune brings many impostors. When Good Fortune leaves a man, she takes what belongs to her. When Good Fortune leaves a man, she brings her friends with her. Yet Bad Fortune leaves a man’s real friends behind. Good Fortune attracts the insincere and shallow—those attracted to a man’s possessions and status—but Bad Fortune drives them away. A friend gained in a time of success may become an enemy in a time of misfortune. A friend, turned foe, can cause much injury. A man may mourn the loss of wealth, but he is left with something more valuable: true friendship. However, there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother!
God created man to have consciousness, not only in this life but in the life to come. The gift that Fortune offers is short-lived. Does a man lust after wealth, or does he lust after the prestige and power gained by wealth? Men hate those who are greedy, but they love those who are charitable. A man will gain a better reputation if he is generous. Therefore, why not be a giving person? “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” If a man lives in excess, he is lacking something on the inside. Since he is unsatisfied, he will fill his void with something from the outside.
Men strive for happiness, yet error leads many to seek what is falsely called good. Many think the highest form of happiness is found in the delights of pleasure. Some think happiness means gaining respect, influence, or fame. The greedy, however, are never satisfied. If a man is never satisfied, he is never truly happy. How can a man be truly happy, if he is never truly satisfied? Virtue, which is of great worth, is given to those who posses her. A wise man pursues virtue. The man who seeks perversity will never find true happiness.
Does a politician become more virtuous because he has attained a prominent position? Is he worthy of honour because of the office he holds or because of his good moral character? Does power corrupt, or does it reveal the corruption in men? Does a celebrity become more virtuous because he has attained popularity? Does fame corrupt, or does it reveal the corruption in men? What about wealth? Does wealth corrupt, or does it reveal the corruption in men?
Earthly happiness is only a shadow of true happiness. A man may own many possessions, but his possessions will not last forever. Can a man find true happiness in what is perishable and imperfect? True happiness is eternal and perfect. God is eternal and perfect. He offers man eternal happiness through salvation. The perfect is greater than the imperfect. True happiness is found in God. He is the essence of true happiness. He is its source. Thus, it is infinitely valuable to know God.
God is all-powerful. If God is all-powerful, there is nothing He cannot do! Yet God can do no evil, He cannot sin. God is perfect, therefore, He is righteous. God is perfect, thus He is without sin. Sin is imperfection. God cannot be imperfect.
When wicked men rule, virtue is trampled underfoot. The wicked are worthless vessels, and their sin will not go unpunished. In the end, virtue will not go unrewarded. Good and evil are opposites. Virtue and vice are opposites. Reward and punishment are opposites. They are in conflict. Just as wealth does not quench one’s desire for possessions, authority does not quench one’s desire for power. What do greedy men and power-hungry leaders have in common? They both hollow themselves out. They are empty on the inside, never content. Sin is a disease that rots the inner most parts of a man. “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Men seek happiness, yet many become sidetracked by pleasure. They are weak, lacking self-control. In their weakness they miss the mark. What greater weakness can a man have than willful ignorance? Willful ignorance is cowardice, and cowardice is a vice. Courage, on the other hand, is a virtue. If a man abandons goodness to embrace vice, he has fallen victim to his weaknesses. Such a man is not living to his full potential. A man who fully embraces sin is like a walking corpse. He is alive on the outside, but dead on the inside. Although he desires true happiness, he has traded it for the pleasures of this world. He is deceived by pleasure. He is caught in its snare. The wise seek truth, while the wicked chase after pleasure. True happiness cannot be found in evil. Evil enslaves a man.
Good deeds are honourable. Good deeds are virtuous. Those who attain true happiness are called children of God. Therefore, true happiness is attained through faith in Christ. “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” True goodness leads to unity—unity with God. Wickedness leads to separation—separation from God. Therefore, sin separates man from God. When a man is punished for his wicked deeds, it is good—it is just and righteous. God is the just and righteous judge. In the end, He will judge every man according to his deeds. When a man fights against virtue, he is fighting against God.
Do not let adversity defeat your virtue, but use adversity to strengthen it. God has given man a mind to reason, to make judgments, and to make decisions. Man has the free will to decide whether he will follow good or evil. Man pursues what he deems desirable. A man is a slave to what he obeys, whether to righteousness or to sin. A man who pursues wickedness lacks proper reason, judgment, and wisdom. A man who has turned his eyes away from the light of truth will become blinded by the darkness of ignorance. He once walked by the light of day, now he gropes in the darkness of night. When a man yields to his sinful passions, he is enslaved by his own free will.
If God has foreknowledge of a man’s actions, thoughts, and desires, does man really have a free will? God is independent of all things that exist, including time. “Then God said, ‘Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God’s provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years.’” God is eternal and sees the past, the present, and the future. On the sixth day God created man. God foreknows a man’s beginning and end. God foreknows a man’s timeline. God foreknows the outcome of a man’s choices. Men have the free will to choose what is right or wrong, and God knows the outcome of their choices. God knows what is going to occur in the future. Nothing is concealed from an all-knowing God who is everywhere at all times. But just because God is all-knowing, does not mean that man has no free will. Adam and Eve had the free will to choose between right and wrong. So do you! God foreknew that man would sin, so He provided man with salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. Therefore, the foreknowledge of God is relational. Remember: “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Indeed, God has invited you to become a member of His family.
Human reason is inferior to God’s foreknowledge. Human reason will crumble before God’s wisdom. Human reason is unable to see the future. Human reason is limited, yet God’s wisdom is boundless. Man lives in the present. He has lost yesterday, and he does not possess tomorrow. Man cannot know the length of his life. Human reason is blind to the future. Man’s reason has no knowledge of the future. Man has lost much of his knowledge about the past, he has lost much of his history. God, however, has always been. “I AM that I AM!” Man, on the other hand, has a short lifespan. God’s knowledge transcends man’s knowledge. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.” Man cannot fathom all things, but God does. God is the spectator of all things. Man lives in the sight of a judge who sees and knows everything. God will, therefore, reward or punish each man according to his actions.
A righteous man must never grow weary of doing right. During temptations, trials, and tribulations, remember this: we must endure until the end, so that our faith may grow strong and mature. Trials try us, troubles test us; indeed, we are refined in the furnace of affliction. The genuineness of our faith is tested and purified in the refining process. God tests the hearts of men. “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”
Why do bad things happen to good people? “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” Men are rebels and lawbreakers. Men are sinners, prone to evil. A man has the free will to choose between acting upright or causing harm. A man’s actions can affect others. A man has the free will to take responsibility for his misconduct. A man also has the free will to avoid responsibility for his misconduct. Furthermore, a man may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A man may suffer due to a random accident. He may die or get injured. Time and chance—or luck as we call it—can befall a man. The elderly die of old age, for man is born to die. “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” In a world tainted by sin, a man may suffer or die of disease. Man sinned, and the earth became corrupted. Therefore, man lives in an imperfect world. Sin brought death. Thus, a man dies. Metal is strong, yet it rusts and corrodes; nothing in this life lasts forever. Jesus Christ, however, will return to bring restoration: “Creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.”
The more a man embraces sin, the easier Satan can manipulate him. Sin degrades a man. The more society embraces immorality, the easier it can be manipulated. It is easier to persuade a wicked man to do evil, than to persuade a good man to do wrong. It is easier to persuade a wicked society to follow evil, than to persuade a good society to follow immorality. A hedonistic society is an empty society; it lacks true meaning and purpose. A man who loves the truth will find meaning and purpose. A man who loves falsehood will find emptiness and unfulfillment. A decaying society embraces this vice: the tolerance of evil.
Man’s senses are being degraded by technology. His senses are being manipulated. If his senses are being manipulated, then so is his perception. Manipulation is a form of witchcraft. It is a form of control. Artificial Intelligence is indeed artificial. The Digital World is indeed fake. The artificial is a copy of what is real. Without a doubt, Artificial Intelligence is lifeless. The Digital World is lifeless too. Can what is lifeless produce life? Virtual Reality is a cheap imitation. It is a counterfeit of reality. Can true happiness be found in what is false? A man’s intelligence is degraded by Artificial intelligence, his creativity too. Transhumanism will degrade man. It will usurp man’s free will. Man, who is imperfect, cannot make what is perfect. Artificial Intelligence is modeled after sinful man. The imperfect cannot create what is perfect. However, many will worship the Image of the Beast, many will receive the Mark of the Beast. A tyrant can control a man by harming his body, yet a man cannot be controlled if his mind is free from the cares of this life.
Philosophy is one of many tributaries that flow into wisdom. I am not talking about the philosophy of this world, which is only a copy of the real thing. The consolation of philosophy is this: Christ is the power and the wisdom of God, which brings salvation to all who believe. A broken man can be forgiven. A broken man can be restored. “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

I sometimes wonder whether the folks at Nikon wish that I would stop posting photos.* Other people take such beautiful pictures with the same camera that I have, except mine are out focus, badly composed, and incorrectly exposed. I can't be making their camera look good.* And yes, I am conceited enough to think that the folks at Nikon even see my photos.

The mosquito was not invited to the composition but, you know, some people are quite stubborn and conceited.
The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There was just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter. The little prince was not able to reach any explanation of the use of a street lamp and a lamplighter, somewhere in the heavens, on a planet which had no people, and not one house. But he said to himself, nevertheless:
"It may well be that this man is absurd. But he is not so absurd as the king, the conceited man, the businessman, and the tippler. For at least his work has some meaning. When he lights his street lamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower. When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep. That is a beautiful occupation. And since it is beautiful, it is truly useful."
What the little prince did not dare confess was that he was sorry most of all to leave this planet, because it was blest every day with 1440 sunsets!

Did you all see the amazing images from the James Webb Space Telescope?
So many incredible galaxies spinning so many millions of light years away and each containing millions upon millions, maybe trillions, of stars! It's incredible to comprehend the vastness and that these images are just a tiny portion of the known universe. I look at such images and am utterly convinced that there is intelligent life out there amongst the stars, just as we are, and I think it would be incredibly conceited to think otherwise!
