Donald Willis introduces the "first experimental digital magnetic recording head I made in 1948/9 at the Mathematical Laboratory, Cambridge when I joined the team to develop magnetic recording for the EDSAC. This was for a magnetic drum, but this was not used as we switched to magnetic tape when it first became available."

Donald kept it out of simple nostalgia: "it was the first magnetic recording head I had made".

Just picked up this snazzy metal shelf from Target. It works perfectly for containing the pile of hardware I have lying around.

I took this photo of my new Asus P8Z68 Motherboard. I love that all the components are shades of blue. It gives the board a very nice look.

I wish I would have taken my time and took some more shots of this board, but I was too excited to put my new PC all together.

Currently, I'm using this shot as my wallpaper. It's kind of neat to have a visual reminder of what's making all this computer work possible.

It was 1.33GHz G4 processor and maxed out with 2GB of RAM

John Ferguson, Head of IT & Office Services at The Archbishops' Council of the Church of England (the church's organisational headquarters), sent in this photograph of a very venerable old machine...

John says: ' The 'Millionaire' is generally acknowledged as the first commercially-successful calculating machine that could perform multiplication directly rather than by repeated adddition. This is a genuine artihmetic machine, still in working order, dating from 1895.'

He goes on to say: 'This is the mainstay of our Doomsday site in the event of a compete universal long-term power failure combined with a battery shortage in London!' (He's joking... I hope...)

The PCB pictured is from an IBM Model M keyboard, specifically a M5-1 made in 1993. The M5-1 has a small trackball mouse just above the cursor keys. This board is for the mouse. The keyboard's mouse recently quit working, so I took it apart to diagnose the problem. I think the capacitor pictured (center; blurry metal cylinder) has failed based on what looks like corrosion on the board below the capacitor. They can leak, and the leakage damages the board.

Here is a cool dual screen computer set up and what's interesting is that

you can have multiple windows up at the same time and multitask to your

heart's delight. But this photo is not about the actual screens themselves,

it's really about the information you have access to within the system. The

screens are just a tool to get to the really cool learning stuff. That's

why I think language fits this photo. Because with the technology today you

can easily listen, watch, or create many different sources of entertainment

in different languages. Notice from left to right: anime that can be

listened to in Japanese, Songs translated into Korean and analyzed

by Canadians, and a Rainbow Dash subtitled into 30 different languages. How

awesome is that? Language is now less of a barrier than before and

technology is the key to facilitate it. MLP FIM Rules!
