Popular tradition suggests that the song originated with female prisoners at HMP Wakefield. The prisoners exercised by walking around a mature mulberry tree in the prison yard

The nursery rhyme describes the historical structural deterioration and repeated repairs of the actual London Bridge over the River Thames. One unsupported theory claims it references Viking wars that destroyed the bridge and others to a rumour that children were buried alive under the bridge’s foundations as sacrifices to ensure its stability.
