composition for P5.

This is the frame after the application of composition ornaments. Composition ornaments, or "Compo" is a primitive plastic material first developed in the 17th century to enable mass production of carved details for the decorative arts. If you have a victorian house with curlicues around the fireplace or newel post, for example, that's most likely compo.

Compo is made with animal hide glue, pine rosin and whiting (powdered chalk). It's soft and flexible when it's fresh, and can be heated on a steam tray to apply to most any surface. Since it's made out of glue, when steamed it becomes it's own adhesive. Over time (months or years) compo dries and hardens to a brittle hard plastic material.

The Campos Garden ,..is the scene of this "Thorn Gate" , and is located at 12 St., between Aves. B & C , in the East Village of NYC , NY.

This community garden is part of the "Green Thumb" program of the NYC Dept. of Parks.

The Green Thumb Program was NOT consulted about the thorn branch "decoration" ,..which has been installed in order to prevent the local children from climbing the fence to enter the garden. ( Some children had been accused of trying to look at a bird's nest in an apricot tree , after public hours.)

The branches of a living rose bush were cut up and lashed to the top of the garden gate ,.. using uncoated metal wire , which can rust and cause tetnus.

This is the action of "Chris" and "Denis" ,.. and was never discussed or voted on by the membership of the Campos (Community) Garden.

Some feel the thorns are not appropiate for this "Community Garden" , and others are concerned that the City will be sued if injuries result.

What do YOU think?
