"Ribwort plantain is a plant of grasslands, field edges and cultivated ground and tracks, and regularly pops up in lawns as a weed. It flowers between April and October; in contrast to the long flower spikes of Greater plantain, the short, oval flower heads of Ribwort plantain appear as if balanced on the top of their thin, wiry stems. Its seed heads remain for most of the winter providing food for Goldfinches and other seed-eating birds." Wildlife Trusts website

When exposing an image, many adhere to the notion of ETTR. (Expose to the right) For the most part, it achieves the purpose when working with histograms. However, in this shot, I purposely underexposed the image in order to emphasize the light on the horizon.
The clouds on the skyline were a vivid yellow, with dark clouds above. This helped deliver a brooding atmosphere. An ETTR exposure tended to change the yellow to a brighter white, which changed the narrative.
A location Eddie Holden took a fine shot of back in deepest darkest lockdown when delivering goods to Southampton. On our trip to Dorset last week I thought I'd check out the spot, mindful a Morris Cowley Oxford to Southampton East Dock was conveniently timed with our journey. The weather not dark and foggy and the shot doesn't do justice to the buidlings behind me, but in the end it was quite rushed. Having parked the car and placed the parking ticket on the dashborad, as I walked towards the crossing I was concious of the loco creeping to the right so only just managed to get to this side of the road as the crossing sirens started. No gates, just a man in orange to ensure compliance with the warning signs, and of course a large loco and heavy train which can do some damage to a car.
This couple not only belongs to different species, they are quite multicultural as well. The Bear is a Native American, the girl is Norwegian.
--
I bought this Bear somewhere in Arizona. The artist wanted $100, I believed $20 would do as well. So I tried to negotiate but the guy (a Native American) meant he had made the Bear in very special night that only comes once in 10 years, with the help of his ansestors and in compliance with with all the ancient rituals... and any price less than $100 would eternally offend his ancestors and his entire proud nation and all the ghosts of his nation... or whatever. I'm a nice guy and it was unthinkable to me to offend so many people and traditions (and ghosts) so I paid the price. But honestly, it was a good price at the end. I simply love this Bear and looking at him I remember some great places and some nice experiences. Good to have him with me.

If you looked at the couple on the left and you were wondering if they were socially / physically distant enough. If they live in the same household - there is no problem, there is no way to tell unless you were to check their IDs. Towards the centre of this picture, you can see someone in red crossing the road where they shouldn't be. Jaywalking is becoming very common now on the sidewalks of Toronto due to Social / Physical distancing (though we can't be 100% sure this was the case here).
When you looked at this picture what did you notice first? Do you see the changing of the times?

All the changes in the mortgage industry just keep coming and coming. I was having to recycled my knowledge (guidelines and compliance stuff). Now I have to recycle my career choice. Hmmmm, what to do? Anyone need a goffer to carry their photography equipment? ;-D

The theme for this weeks Macro Mondays entry is Backlit. A picture taken with back lighting.
I assure you that this picture is 100% in compliance, being lit by only one light source, and that source being behind the subjects in this photograph. No mirrors or reflective devices of any kind were used.
I am also fairly confident that a great many of you will instantly know how I setup and took this shot. If not, I will post an explanation at the close of entries for this weeks Macro Mondays posts.
HMM.
The setup
This picture is of two ordinary objects, a pen, and a small plastic bead, that have been lit from behind. The light source is slightly below the objects, and just out of frame to the right side of the picture.
The light source is what makes this picture special. It is an ultraviolet LED flashlight. Ultraviolet light is a form electromagnetic radiation (in the spectrum of light) whose wavelength is too short to be seen by the human eye. The ultraviolet light causes the objects to fluoresce. Fluorescence occurs when the plastics absorb energy from the ultraviolet light and then reradiate a portion of this energy at a longer wavelength that we can see. That is why the objects appear to be glowing. They are actually producing light within the spectrum that we can see.
The light is actually only hitting the top portion of both objects. After a little trial and error, I found out that if both objects were completely lit by the light, that they produced very strong internal reflections which created some very over exposed areas. You can see some of this effect if you look closely at the bottom edge of the bead.
Many people are familiar with ultraviolet light when it is referred to by its common name, black light. Many common things will fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Some minerals, soaps and detergents, different types of plastics, and even scorpions fluoresce when lit with ultraviolet. Oh and also just about anything that is a ‘fluorescent’ color. Think highlighter pens.
So as I have explained I was completely in compliance with the theme. No one said what type of light we had to use.

I realize that I am behind yet again and your art is all important to me. After going to a protest yesterday at noon in Chicago, I went to see Hidden Figures at Logan Theater in Logan Square. I had just paid and found my seat when I heard about the protest against Trump's anti-Muslim ban at O'Hare airport and decided to leave, even though I didn't have my camera with me and don't live in that area. My friend Joshua Mellin posted some amazing photos to his Flickr site here: www.flickr.com/photos/joshuamellin/ and I posted a photo and a few videos to my Instagram account here: www.instagram.com/kirstiecat_photo/ There's another protest happening at Terminal Five at O'Hare Airport at 6pm as Trump continues to defy all other government branches, act like a fascist, and appoint a white supremacist with Steven Bannon. If you are an American and you don't stand up to this , shame on you. It doesn't matter what race you are. We are all accountable for making sure our leaders follow the Constitution and adhere to Democracy vs. fascism.
After losing the ability to convene with loved ones for celebrations, I had the idea to create an image that told a story of loneliness on ones birthday in the midst of the pandemic. This is my 7th composition in my “Covid Compliance” series.

Three times my life has opened
Three times my life has opened.
Once, into darkness and rain.
Once, into what the body carries at all times within it and starts
to remember each time it enters into the act of love.
Once, to the fire that holds all.
These three were not different.
You will recognize what I am saying or you will not.
But outside my window all day a maple has stepped from her
leaves like a woman in love with winter, dropping the
colored silks.
Neither are we different in what we know.
There is a door. It opens. Then it is closed. But a slip of light stays,
like a scrap of unreadable paper left on the floor, or the one
red leaf the snow releases in March.

With the PTC compliance deadline looming, New Hampshire Northcoast sent their GP38-2 No. 3823 down to the MBTA/Keolis for testing. Here, the locomotive leads a 5 car consist with rebuilt F40PH-3C No. 1061 pushing from the rear as they head East through ABS 3.6 in Everett, MA. The MBTA's Eastern Route was an odd place to see a NHN locomotive, but it was chosen due to Green Line Extension work obstructing testing on the Fitchburg Main and New Hampshire Main. For several hours, the crew ran numerous tests between Revere and Salem before they could officially certify the system on the NHN 3823.

This photograph is a part of my most recent series, “Covid Compliance.” When the pandemic struck, and the ability to go out and photograph the world was no longer an option, I struggled in my identity as a photographer. “Am I still a photographer when I have no one to photograph anymore?” I asked myself. The change was sudden and tumultuous. We were forced into such intimate isolation with ourselves. This photo was birthed out of Trump’s commentary about ingesting bleach paired with those feelings of loneliness, isolation, and confusion that I was so intimately left with. Every photo in this series was taken in the confines of my basement and uses me as both the subject and photographer. The intimacy of the loneliness in the pandemic catalyzed in me a revival in my artistic practice. The confines of the loneliness expanded my imagination, and demanded I find new ways to tell stories. In this photograph, I use painted clouds to communicate the distance I felt from the outside world, the dead flowers to indicate the grim realities of our mortality during the pandemic, and the manipulated clock to communicate how disorienting time became in isolation. I created images to feel as dystopian and as surreal as reality felt during that time.
