In the long forgotten past before Sat-Nav (Satellite Navigation) and GPS (Global Positioning System) , we had to find out where we were and where to go using paper maps and strange little manual devices called…..Compasses!

Lid of an old pocket compass - Macro Mondays

Up-loaded for Macro Mondays theme 'Contraption'. An image of my Dad's 1930's compass.Although I can use it to steer North, South, East or West, what all the mirror, holes and arrows are for is a complete mystery to me.

Local pub at Hemingford Abbots, Cambs

The Axe and Compass is a historic pub located in the village of Hemingford Abbots, which is about 15 miles west of the city of Cambridge in England. The pub dates back to the 17th century and has a charming traditional English pub atmosphere with wooden beams, cozy fireplaces, and comfortable seating.

The Axe and Compass is known for its selection of ales, beers, and wines, and serves classic British pub food such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and Sunday roasts. The pub uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, including vegetables grown in its own garden.

The pub hosts regular events throughout the year, including live music, quizzes, and beer festivals. It also has a private function room that can be hired for events such as weddings and birthday parties.

Overall, the Axe and Compass is a charming and popular pub that offers a traditional English pub experience with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and a welcoming atmosphere. Its location in the picturesque village of Hemingford Abbots, combined with its historic charm and excellent food and drink, make it a must-visit destination for anyone in the Cambridge area.

Excerpt from www.goderich.ca/en/town-hall-and-services/resources/Herit...:

North Harbour Rd., Compass Minerals (formerly Sifto Salt) operates the largest rock salt mine in the world producing nine million tons yearly. Salt was discovered

accidently in 1866 by Samuel Platt while drilling for oil. For many years extraction involved evaporating salt from a brine solution brought to the surface and this process continues on the east side of town. In 1959, the first shaft was sunk here beginning underground extraction. The total length of roads under the lake bottom but within the salt layer is now greater than the length of all streets in Goderich.

i like to draw dumb stuff on my arms

Lack of objects for today shooting.

Then I saw my compass on my backpack, idea came!!

I placed the compass on yellow paper for color contrast. Realized no magnets to create magnetic field to rotate the compass.

Found my beads magnet. Setup a LED light and smartphone shutter for 1sec. Moved a cluster of beads magnet to spin the

It worked and also leaving a trail of reflected lights from the beads, bonus!!

Hope you like it !!

A photographers sun compass, with modern technology and apps this doesn’t get much use now. I pulled it out for this photograph for the Flickr Friday “North” theme.

A classic, almost prehistoric-looking prairie wildflower. The tallest one in the middle was around eight feet tall, or about 2.4 meters. Thompson Prairie, where this photo was taken, was filled with them, making for an interesting sight.
