Last January, this iconic lighthouse was destroyed in a fierce winter storm. It's not the first time this happened. Since the original was constructed in 1903, it's been knocked down by waves as well as fire. On this occasion, the townsfolk came together to fund a replacement but moved it back several feet from the breakwater on a new foundation. Perhaps that will spare the wooden structure from the worst of the waves as they come crashing ashore in a gale. It still looks a bit unfinished and I'm hoping it will be shingled by cedar shakes as the previous version was.
As for my composition, I was looking to recreate some of the big rollers that come into the harbor from Georgian Bay - using the waves of stone on an adjacent beach.
The Pond Inlet tank farm is a vital piece of infrastructure in Nunavut’s Arctic landscape. Each year, petroleum, oil, and lubricants are delivered during the annual sealift, ensuring the community has fuel for domestic heating, the local airport, the power house, and transportation including snowmobiles and vehicles. Set against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, this facility is a testament to the logistical challenges and resilience of northern communities.
Interior das ruínas da antiga Igreja da Misericórdia de Sortelha, instalada, no século XVII, na primitiva igreja medieval de São João, situada extramuros da aldeia histórica do Sabugal. A estrutura em granito, hoje desprovida de cobertura, permite observar o arco triunfal de volta perfeita que separava a nave da capela‑mor, bem como o altar em cantaria acessível por degraus laterais. À direita, as mísulas salientes testemunham a existência de um coro alto em madeira, enquanto os vãos gradeados revelam posteriores adaptações de uso e segurança. Integrada na rede das Santas Casas da Misericórdia, fundada em 1498, esta igreja articulava funções de culto com assistência a pobres, doentes e peregrinos, em ligação com o antigo hospital vizinho. O atual estado de ruína, resultado da perda de funções religiosas e do despovoamento da Beira Interior, transforma o espaço num lugar de leitura das camadas históricas de Sortelha e da evolução do seu território para além do recinto amuralhado.
Interior of the ruins of the former Church of Misericórdia de Sortelha, built in the 17th century on the site of the original medieval church of São João, located outside the walls of the historic village of Sabugal. The granite structure, now roofless, allows visitors to see the round triumphal arch that separated the nave from the chancel, as well as the stone altar accessible by side steps. On the right, the protruding corbels bear witness to the existence of a high wooden choir, while the barred openings reveal later adaptations for use and security. Part of the network of Santas Casas da Misericórdia (Houses of Mercy), founded in 1498, this church combined worship with assistance to the poor, sick, and pilgrims, in connection with the old neighboring hospital. Its current state of ruin, resulting from the loss of religious functions and the depopulation of Beira Interior, transforms the space into a place where one can read the historical layers of Sortelha and the evolution of its territory beyond the walled enclosure.
Situadas extramuros em Sortelha, uma das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, encontram-se as ruínas da Igreja da Misericórdia, também referida como Igreja de Santa Rita ou de São João, com origens que remontam, pelo menos, ao século XIV, embora a estrutura visível date maioritariamente do século XVI, com possíveis ampliações em 1626 e decoração posterior no século XVIII. Construída em granito, a igreja, de nave única e planta retangular, evidencia um portal principal em arco abatido e um arco triunfal de volta inteira, além de uma sacristia adossada a sul e vestígios do campanário em ferro forjado. Próxima ao antigo hospital da Misericórdia e de uma necrópole com sepulturas escavadas na rocha, a igreja integrava um importante polo de apoio religioso e assistencial. Desativada no século XX, a estrutura em ruínas testemunha a presença e ação da Irmandade da Misericórdia na comunidade, refletindo o papel destas instituições na assistência a necessitados em núcleos rurais fortificados.
Located outside the walls of Sortelha, one of Portugal's Historic Villages, are the ruins of the Church of Mercy, also known as the Church of Santa Rita or São João, whose origins date back to at least the 14th century, although the visible structure dates mainly from the 16th century, with possible extensions in 1626 and later decoration in the 18th century. Built in granite, the church, with a single nave and rectangular floor plan, features a main portal with a lowered arch and a triumphal arch, as well as a sacristy attached to the south and traces of a wrought iron bell tower. Close to the old Misericórdia hospital and a necropolis with graves carved into the rock, the church was part of an important center of religious and charitable support. Decommissioned in the 20th century, the ruined structure bears witness to the presence and work of the Brotherhood of Mercy in the community, reflecting the role of these institutions in assisting the needy in fortified rural centers.

Edificada em pedra granítica e hoje arruinada, permite ainda reconhecer elementos renascentistas, como o arco de volta perfeita que marca o acesso ao interior e os muros em cantaria aparelhada, indícios da qualidade construtiva original. A sua degradação acompanha o despovoamento das aldeias de montanha ao longo do século XX e a consequente perda de função destas estruturas de apoio comunitário. Integrada no conjunto monumental de Sortelha, classificada como conjunto de interesse público, a antiga igreja oferece atualmente um ponto privilegiado de contemplação da paisagem e convida à reflexão sobre o tempo e a transformação do território raiano.
The ruins of the Church of the Misericórdia de Sortelha, in the district of Guarda, stand as a striking testament to the religious, social, and charitable history of this historic village, which has been linked since the 16th century to the network of Santas Casas da Misericórdia, whose origins date back to 1498. Built of granite and now in ruins, it still reveals Renaissance elements, such as the semicircular arch marking the entrance and the walls of dressed stone, evidence of the original quality of construction. Its deterioration parallels the depopulation of mountain villages throughout the 20th century and the consequent loss of function of these community support structures. Part of the Sortelha monumental complex, classified as a site of public interest, the old church currently offers a prime vantage point for contemplating the landscape and invites reflection on time and the transformation of the border region.

At the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region, I had the honor of meeting my dear brother Mr. Anas Ayoub Zebari, Head of the Organizations Department at the Office of the President of the Kurdistan Region, His Excellency President Nechirvan Barzani.
It was very emotional to be present in Christchurch, New Zealand, and experience the level of love, aroha, and community support at the Hagley Park Vigil to mourn the loss of innocent lives at the 15/03 Terrorist Attack.

The scene evokes a sense of both sadness and a quiet desperation, highlighting the invisible struggles faced by many individuals living on the margins of society.
Recently, the Ambassador-At-Large of IIMSAM in Iraq, Mr. Kawa Abban, had a meeting with the General Consul of Hungary, Mr. Attila Tóth, at the General Hungarian consulate in Erbil. The two discussed IIMSAM-KRG activities from 2017 to 2023, and Mr. Toth warmly welcomed Amb. Kawa Abban. During the meeting, Mr. Tóth expressed admiration for IIMSAM's GS- Mr. Remigio Maradona and congratulated him for selecting such an outstanding staff in the Kurdistan Region Government. Furthermore, Mr. Tóth promised to visit Mr. Abban at the IIMSAM-KRG office to collaborate with IIMSAM-KRG soon.

Acting Mayor of Squamish, John French, unfurled the pride flag in today's ceremony atop the District of Squamish building. He then raised it to the top of the pole alongside our B.C. and Canadian flags.
John stated the the event was especially meaningful for him as he has a transgendered child.

ontinuous heavy rainfall has caused severe waterlogging, pushing the sufferings of ordinary residents to an extreme level. Main roads and alleyways have been submerged under knee-deep water, completely halting normal vehicular movement. In this dire situation, patients needing emergency medical attention are facing the worst difficulties.
Due to the heavily flooded street, no ambulance or motorized vehicle could reach the spot. Left with no choice, a sick individual is being transported toward the hospital on a flatbed cycle van. Holding umbrellas to shield themselves and navigating through the dirty, flowing floodwater, this risky journey raises fears of worsening the patient's critical condition.

Em ruína há mais de cinquenta anos, perdeu a cobertura, deixando expostas as paredes de granito, o arco triunfal e a fachada com portal em arco abatido e janelas que iluminavam o coro alto. A ausência de telhado permite observar claramente a organização interna, incluindo vestígios da sacristia e elementos como a base do púlpito. Kawa Abban Founder & CEO of World Group visited the Middle East Technical University (METU) campus in Lefka, Cyprus, where he met with Mr. Maxim Zaid, Director of International Students from the Middle East. They discussed the situation of Iraqi students at the university and signed an academic cooperation protocol between World Group Organization for Educational Services and METU.
