Lamar Dodd
From This Earth - 1945
William Lamar Dodd was a painter and university administrator committed to advancing arts education in his home state of Georgia and throughout the South. Dodd was born in Fairburn, Georgia, on September 22, 1909. Dodd’s artistic talent was recognized early, and he began taking art classes at the local college, LaGrange Female College, as early as the sixth grade. After one year at the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a year teaching high school art in Alabama, Dodd moved to New York in 1928 and enrolled in the Art Students League. He studied with George Bridgman and Boardman Robinson (American, 1876 - 1952) and took private classes with George Luks (American, 1866 - 1933) and Charles Martin. Dodd returned to Georgia in 1930 and married Mary Ridley Lehmann the following year. After his first solo exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta in 1931, Dodd returned to the Art Students League in New York, this time studying with Jean Charlot (American, born France, 1898 - 1979) and John Steuart Curry (American, 1897 - 1946) and working as a sign painter to support his family during the Great Depression. In 1934 Dodd left New York for Birmingham, Alabama, where he worked for several years in an art supply store and painted at night.
Dodd gradually rose to prominence during the 1930s by winning several awards in national competitive exhibitions. This increased recognition led to his appointment as artist-in-residence at the University of Georgia in 1937; he became chair of the department the following year. Dodd was an able administrator who, during the course of his nearly 40-year career at the university, transformed the art school into
Modernism in the South
To most people, modern simply means “up to the moment.” But modernism in art was a specific movement that began, perhaps, as early as 1870 and lasted until after World War II. The South was as open to its influence as any other part of the country, and Modernism in the South reflects those influences. Most of the major artistic movements that emerged in Europe early in the twentieth century can be seen here: cubism in Paul Ninas’s Abstraction, surrealism in John McCrady’s I Can’t Sleep, and expressionism in Lamar Dodd’s From This Earth.
It is also clearly demonstrated here that the influence of these European movements was both indirect and late, usually filtered through the experiences of other American artists who had spent time in Europe, where they had direct contact with European modernists between the world wars.

Located on the Riverwalk in historic downtown Augusta, the Morris Museum of Art, the oldest museum in the country that is specifically devoted to the art and artists of the American South, is noted for its multifaceted permanent collection of 5,000 works of art and a rich variety of continually changing special exhibitions and public programs. The Morris is dedicated to the continued interpretation of the culture of the South in all its forms.
Located in historic downtown Augusta, Georgia, on the Savannah River, the Morris has preserved the history and culture of the South for more than twenty-five years. The museum’s permanent collection, dating from the late eighteenth century to the present, is arranged thematically in ten galleries. In addition, the museum hosts temporary special exhibitions throughout the year as well as a rich array of public programs and events for children, families, and art lovers of all ages.
The Morris Museum’s permanent collection was established in 1989 with the purchase of 230 paintings from Dr. Robert Powell Coggins, a pioneering collector of Southern art. That acquisition set the museum’s mission and identified its special interest in the art and artists of the American South. When it opened in 1992, the collection included approximately 700 objects, half of them paintings. Today, the museum’s collection includes 5,000 works of art that represent fifteen states and the District of Columbia. In recent years, its traditional strengths in paintings and works on paper have been significantly enhanced by the creation of important collections of photographs, folk art, and studio art glass. The Morris Museum’s Center for the Study of Southern Art, a comprehensive research library, has also grown to include 20,000 volumes, 28,000 vertical files, 1,350 media resources, and a rich archive that includes artists’ letters and papers.
