This memorial was unveiled in 1952 to commemorate the Elite force known as the ‘Commandos’ which was set up in 1940 on the orders of Winston Churchill.
Although there had been Commando units before 1942, Winston Churchill personally ordered the raising of this elite force back in the summer of 1940. Although previous specialist training had been given, it had proved unsatisfactory and it was decided that one centre was needed to ensure a regular flow of trained troops. Achnacarry was chosen as the location of this important Centre.
After arrival at the Centre, the trainees were taught tactics, war techniques, and devised many new ones. The trainees used the latest weapons and equipment and trained to be experts in handling captured weapons. They were also taught unarmed combat and survival skills in the unpredictable mountain climate of Lochaber

"... no churz zum hütige Abe ...

The Commando Memorial in Lochaber is a monument in Scotland, dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Situated around a mile from Spean Bridge village, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it has become one of Scotland's best-known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction offering views of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mòr.The monument consists of a cast bronze sculpture of three Commandos in characteristic dress complete with cap comforter, webbing and rifle, standing atop a stone plinthThe three Commandos are depicted looking south towards Ben Nevis."United we conquer" is inscribed around the top of the stone plinth, while the original plaque on the stone plinth reads: "In memory of the officers and men of the commandos who died in the Second World War 1939–1945. This country was their training ground."
A Garden of Remembrance, which was subsequently added to the site, is used by many surviving World War II Commandos as the designated final resting place for their ashes. It has also been used as a place where many families have scattered ashes and erected tributes to loved ones who belonged to contemporary Commando units and who have died in more recent conflicts such as the Falklands War or in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Nearly missed it! This Lockheed MC-130J Commando II 16-5839 landing at Mildenhall caught me by surprise, and was already past the threshold before I could bring the camera to bear. However, this view shows much interesting rear detail :o))) Including the stowed refuelling drogues in the outer underwing pods, with which these Special Ops Hercs top up the based Ospreys.
The Sea King is nearing the end of its long and distinguished Royal Navy career. The opportunity to photograph them as much as possible at this year's Air Day was too good to refuse. Here's hoping that the Commando Assault as we know it survives, when the Merlins arrive.

Title pretty much covers it. It's a Modelcraft design, I think it's from 1942 (of course, the airplane and the picture are much more recent).

Lympstone Commando railway station is located on the Avocet Line, a branch line from Exeter to Exmouth
The station used to be for the exclusive use of visitors to the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre at Lympstone only. In recent times a new footpath and cycleway has been built between the railway and the camp so now the station is available for anyone to use.
