“Norman Rockwell’s eleventh and final ‘Willie Gillis’ cover for the Post. Here, Rockwell paints Willie Gillis at peace with a new life as a college student under the G.I. Bill, surrounded by subtle keepsakes from his war days. By incorporating military souvenirs without overemphasizing them, Rockwell illustrates the impact war has played in shaping this young hero’s life. Among the props Rockwell included are a patch designating the rank of Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and a certificate of honorable discharge.” – Norman Rockwell Museum

Gillis matured over the course of the series until he is almost unrecognizable in this final work. Rockwell created a good ending for the series by depicting Gillis relaxing while studying at college. We know that things ended well for him, It didn’t for so many others.

For some unknown reason....my husband decided to start cleaning out the attic yesterday. Oh my goodness....we found some old... old.... things. Guess that's to be expected when you've lived in the same house for 35 years. These are my text books when I went to business school......1963.....typing, business law, shorthand and an English handbook. I know they should have gone in the trash.....but for some reason....I just couldn't do it. Maybe tomorrow....

I have always admired the work of Kim Klassen She is a true artist. Her images are always so soft and full of light. I've taken a number of her online classes and she's a terrific teacher as well. This is my attempt to imitate one her images: www.flickr.com/photos/kimklassen/6785749757/

I am ready for a new semester! I'm taking Studies of Major Authors: Edgar Allan Poe; Expository Writing; Healthy Living; and Intermediate Algebra. Wish me luck with math! I'm an English major - I can't math very well! ;)

After asking a number of professors and students about which history textbooks they like most, we've finally come up with a list.

blog.bookgator.com/list-of-best-history-textbooks/

A small sampling of my text books.

*The bottom three 'course readers' are marked for your viewing pleasure with their appropriate titles.

*Volume 2 of 'Politics' is not yet available.

*Two books are missing because they are "either no longer in print or out of stock" at the bookstore. The professor said he'll "work on that. There are ways...," he says.

*This does not inlcude the various 'primary sources' handouts that I must print from the internet.

I really love that my German Professor creates her own textbook. That's what I call a great and engaging teacher.

Students hitting the college bookstore this fall will get a stark lesson in economics before they've cracked open their first chapter. Textbook prices are soaring. Some experts say it's because they're sold like drugs. www.nbcnews.com/feature/freshman-year/college-textbook-pr...

College students overwhelmingly report that the biggest problem with textbooks is their cost. Whereas tuition costs are a built-in budgeted expense, the cost of textbooks is added on at the beginning of each semester.

Our survey of hundreds of college students looked at perceptions about textbooks, buying habits, and what students pay each semester.
