Amsterdam has been called the "Venice of the North" for its more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the grachtengordel. Alongside the main canals are 1550 monumental buildings. From: wikipedia, this article also features information on this particular canal; Prinsengracht

Koek-en-zopie is a Dutch term used for the food and drink sold during ice-skating periods.
In the 17th to the 19th century Zopie consisted of a mixture of bock beer and rum. Due to this blend eggs, cinnamon and cloves to add and then to heat arises Zopie. Nowadays there are mainly hot chocolate, pea soup, mulled wine and almond cake sold.
Until the nineteenth century restrained the legislature liquor stores where located on land or water found. From the ice was no question and as long as the weather would allow there were Koek-en-Zopie tents. For the same reason also gamble and whore tents run on the ice.
