Tucked away behind the immensity of Liverpool Street station is K10 Appold Street. The second such K10, it took them 12 years to open this one (but weâre glad they did). K10 started back in 2000 in Copthall Avenue - the premise, I think, was to offer modern Japanese food and a modern Japanese dining experience to people in The City, and at this, they have succeeded. Why âmodernâ? Well, they have taken something of a âfusionâ approach - they use a lot more sauces than traditional , and the flavours are probably better calibrated to Western tastes (read: more over the top!). So even if you have a sushi skeptic in your dining party, youâll probably be able to find a non sushi dish that satisfies (prawn tempura, anyone?)
As you can probably see, K10 is a âkaitenâ (or conveyor belt) restaurant - which means watching your food glide by on colour coded plates (each colour corresponds to a different price). This means that, if you see what you want, you can start eating then and there. It really is fast food. Alternatively, if you order a hot dish from the kitchen, service is quick. Itâs a pretty streamlined operation. You can watch the chef working in the open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant. Watch him making & dropping things onto the conveyor belt. Watch him making your dinner. I guess real proof of freshness is having seen the guy make it in front of you, right? This will never get old to me...
As for drink - a small selection of sake (most by the carafe or small 300ml bottle) - a reasonable selection of wines (goes without saying in The City), plus lots of Japanese beers, including OWA - a Japanese beer brewed in Belgium (yeah, I dunno how that works either), Hitachino Nest (excellent if only due to the multicoloured owls on the bottle) and of course, Asahi. Standout dishes? Black cod served on a bed of salad in some kind of incredible sauce. celestial perfection. Or the tuna tartare - a real masterpiece of understated, well balanced Japanese flvour, and also a real bastard to eat with chopsticks.
Itâs also pretty economical, I reckon you could eat well for about £15-£25 a head (maybe without drinks and being entirely ravenous?). This is unless you start going to town on the mobile-oriental-cornocopia that is the conveyor belt, which would beâ¦understandable. As K10 is based in the Broadgate Estate business district, itâs not open on weekends. So head down in the week and observe the frenetic hustle & bustle of City Life through the glass facade, as you enjoy a Zen moment with some kind of deep fried sea creature...
While driving past the White House I saw this Code Pinkster dressed as Dick Cheney in prison attire.
