When working with older British-made puzzles it is accepted that the quality can sometimes be a little hit and miss, particularly when compared with contemporary European or North American jigsaws. This past week has been an interesting experience…
The first two days were spent fighting with an old Whitman puzzle, which after 30-40 pieces placed was dismantled and returned to the box. A combination of poorly fitting pieces made from wafer thin card, which has warped in the intervening years, rendered this one unbuildable, at least for me. If the pieces were placed correctly they didn’t stay together and an incorrectly placed piece could not be extracted without all of the adjoining pieces becoming disconnected in the process.
So I selected this old Philmar puzzle instead, which is hardly seeking a safe haven in terms of quality.
Built using my preferred method of beginning with the horizon, then working up towards the upper edge before working downward from the horizon to the lower edge.
The fun began almost immediately. I had two halves of the horizon but the middle two pieces didn’t join together. Although I counted 44 columns, which seemed right for a nominal 1200 piece puzzle, I assumed that perhaps I had missed a piece, or some pieces needed rearranging, and I continued.
By the time I had finished the sky, I had two halves of a puzzle. There is a definite vertical seam, not unusual in larger piece counts, but the picture on either side of the seam did not line up. This is perhaps most obvious on the two chimneys nearest the photographer.
Working downward through the picture, keeping the two halves separated for now, I start having problems with alignment on the horizontal. A row count confirms that there is a horizontal seam too, and the picture doesn’t align there either! See the lower edge of the roof on the nearest cottage, not to mention the walls at the end of the road centre right. On the guide picture there is a single wall, in the puzzle there are two walls, such is the offset!
Finished off the puzzle as four separate quarters, only fitting them together for the sake of the picture of the final image.
As well as two missing pieces, and a number of others that have been chewed by a cat at some stage, there is a piece in the grass that does not fit the gap in the grass. I cannot work out where the incorrectly placed piece is, and as there were five of these when I initially finished I am happy that I was able to correct four of them.
Despite this, I am pressing on with my original plan to build the companion title next, if only because I am now familiar with the pieces and the idiosyncrasies of these puzzles!
