Wheal Coates is an old mine we passed while hiking along the South West Coastal Path.

The first wave of the storm arrived in the wee hours of the morning with thunder, snow squalls, and continued high winds. The snow covered all except the steepest rock faces and the areas protected by the overhang of White Rim Sandstone. A layer of ice coated many of the rock surfaces as the snow melted initially and then froze. A brief respite in the storm with a few breaks in the clouds after sunrise allowed a view toward the Maze District of Canyonlands NP, including Ekker Butte in the center of the frame.

Deep inside a beech forest. Not a person for miles, nothing that you can see moving, yet the air is full of the sounds of movement.

The most beautiful feature of the snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is also the major reason why it is a vulnerable species. That coat has to be (along with the majestic Tiger) one of the most beautiful of any creature. And look at its wonderful big tail here. Almost as long as the body itself.

Tomorrow I'll have some photos of the cats in action, and their speed and agility surprised me. Such wonderful animals, lethal in their natural environment, but endangered by just one other creature - the most destructive of any species to have ever inhabited this planet - homo sapiens.

But the snow leopard was also fortunate to have one of the truly great naturalist writers of the 20th century document its plight. In 1978 Peter Matthiessen (1927-2014) wrote "The Snow Leopard", an account of his two-month search for the snow leopard with naturalist George Schaller in the Dolpo region on the Tibetan Plateau in the Himalayas. It was a book that moved me greatly, as did his more recent work on rare Japanese cranes, "The Birds of Heaven: Travels with Cranes" (2001). In 2017 Peter's son Alex recreated his quest for the snow leopard: www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/04/zen-following-fathe...

I liked the colourful coat on this horse in the fields beyond Loosely Row. Taken on my walk last week

After a hard day at work, I was out and about and I wanted to enjoy the fresh air and the beginning of autumn. I also hoped for one or the other photo. Just switch off and enjoy. There was a classical concert in the nearby castle and suddenly I saw a neighbor in the distance. She waved to me with something in her hand. She is friendly and nice, but also very curious, which for me was a kind of Code Red :-)! She said she had a ticket left and whether I wanted to go with her. Usually am friendly and explain why I something don't want . To this day it is an enigma to me how I managed to say, briefly and directly - no, thank you. I quickly took the photo, put on my headphones and beamed myself up with Metallica :-) because that was, what matters for me that day.

Thank you for taking your time and looking at it, I really appreciate it.

Another one of my fave areas of Cornwall with all the old mine workings, This is at Chapel Porth near St Agnes on a rare sunny day .

Taz losing her winter coat. How interesting the colour change.

This photo was taken mid-September and now Taz has completely lost her winter coat is is looking rather sleek in all black.

A carnivorous animal in the same family as weasels, badgers, mink etc. that lives primarily on a diet of fish but also includes frogs, crayfish, crabs and even a few waterfowl.

A coat of long guard hairs over their insulated underfur keeps them warm and dry so they can stay comfortable throughout the North American winters. They are very successful at hunting prey in our rivers, streams and ponds aided by their webbed feet, long muscular tail and sharp claws coupled with the ability to hold their breath for extended periods. As a preventative measure to becoming waterlogged they do spend a lot of time on land and enter the water only to hunt or travel much unlike the sea otters that spend most of their lives in the ocean. An overland sprint of 10 to 18 miles while searching for prey is not uncommon.

River otters seem to have the ability to live alone or in pairs but are quick to socialize in groups when other members are encountered. After mating and going through a gestation period of 80 - 90 days a female will give birth to 1 - 5 pups in a den called a holt or couch which she excavates under tree roots or a cache of rocks. Prior to the birth the female called a bitch or sow will drive the male (dog or boar) away and the pups or cubs will be tended to by the female and older offspring if still around. The pups will begin emerging from the den at about 1 month of age and mom will entice them into the water for their first swim at about 2 months. After the pups are weaned dad may return and help raise the juveniles until probably 1 year of age. Females attain sexual maturity at 2 years of age and males at 3.

River otters range in size from 10 to 33 lbs and 2.5 to 5 ' in length with females being about 1/3 the size of males. When not hunting prey they spend much time playing and frolicking with each other. This individual is one of a trio that has clawed its way onto the ice to enjoy the spoils caught underwater.

the little snow fall didn't last long and by the next day, was just a memory...

He seems to be a juvenile, curious about everything and lacks natural fear of other species.

Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. It is much appreciated.

The Bison on a local farm have heavy coats to deal with the snowfalls this winter. Today, my coat kept me very warm on our walk but my cheeks got truly rosy with the cold temps.

What do you do when you and your daughter walk into a store and both fall in love with the same coat????

A drone photo from above the Cuillin ridge from my Skye trip in November, on a perfect winter day. I must admit one of my best ever memories was doing the ridge in summer, , and even though I've done a few sections in winter under snow and ice, I don't think I'c be up to doing the whole ridge in such conditions. My favourite stretch in winter was a day on Pinnacle ridge on Sgurr Nan Gillean which is the prominent mountain in this view. The cloud inversion made it so special. Coats of Ice is by Damien Jurado. I need to head north again soon if there's a chance of snow.

Wheal Coates is a historic tin mine located on the rugged cliffs of St Agnes in Cornwall, England. Established in the 18th century, it became renowned during the 19th century for its significant tin production. The mine's iconic engine house, perched dramatically above the Atlantic Ocean, is a striking remnant of Cornwall's rich mining heritage. Wheal Coates closed in 1914, but its preserved ruins, including the Towanroath Shaft engine house, are now a popular tourist attraction and part of the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. The site offers stunning coastal views and insight into Cornwall's industrial past.

Joseph's Coat Moths found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia. They are also known as Painted Vine Moths.

The moths are day flying, with black, red, pale blue and yellow colours. Male and female look similar except the female is a bit larger and with larger white area on thorax.

In the days like these you can even believe that you live in the candy world- everything outside was coated with frost "sugar". So, since looks can be a lie, why not find out if taste is tricking us too?

A fellow dog walker made Jack a coat. I put it on him and he refused to move, it was almost like a straightjacket on him :-)
