Beautiful velvety snow covered the river Dundonnel, and these sinuous curves gave away it's presence. I didn't know what to choose for a title, so Clowns on Velvet by Frank Zappa is as good as any.

I'll tell you the story of Cloony the Clown
Who worked in a circus that came through town.
His shoes were too big and his hat was too small,
But he just wasn't, just wasn't funny at all.
He had a trombone to play loud silly tunes,
He had a green dog and a thousand balloons.
He was floppy and sloppy and skinny and tall,
But he just wasn't, just wasn't funny at all.
And every time he did a trick,
Everyone felt a little sick.
And every time he told a joke,
Folks sighed as if their hearts were broke.

One day he said, "I'll tell this town
How it feels to be an unfunny clown."
And he told them all why he looked so sad,

This is a super close-up portrait of a Ruddy Turnstone sandpiper. He appears to still have much of his breeding coloration, so I am assuming he only recently arrived from the breeding grounds in the arctic. I took this shot on the Barnegat Jetty, where there was a group of about eight Turnstones lazily hanging out on the rocks. These birds will likely stay around all winter, as I have seen them there in January and February. Gotta love the clown-like coloration facial coloration on these shorebirds. Very attractive in my opinion. View large for best Clown- Face (aka Ruddy Turnstone) experience.

Clowns, known as Atsaras, play a vital role during Bhutan’s religious festivals, especially the Tshechu. They keep the audience entertained with humor, often cracking bold and vulgar jokes. But their role goes beyond comedy — they also help explain the meanings behind the sacred dances, adding to the lively and engaging atmosphere of the celebration. They’re the only ones who can joke freely with the monks and lamas attending the event. They remind me of the jesters from medieval courts — the only people who could make fun of kings, princes, or landlords without risking their heads.
This image was taken at the Thimphu Tshechu festival. While Atsaras play such a big part in these celebrations, they’re often overlooked in photos representing these events.

I clown, conosciuti come Atsara, svolgono un ruolo fondamentale durante i festival religiosi del Bhutan, soprattutto durante lo Tshechu. Intrattengono il pubblico con il loro umorismo, spesso con battute audaci o un po’ volgari. Ma il loro compito va oltre la comicità: spiegano anche il significato delle danze sacre, contribuendo a creare un’atmosfera vivace e coinvolgente. Sono gli unici a poter scherzare liberamente con monaci e lama durante le cerimonie. Mi ricordano i giullari delle corti medievali — gli unici che potevano prendere in giro re, principi o signori senza rischiare la testa.
Questa immagine e' stata scattata durante lo Tshechu di Thimphu. Anche se gli Atsara hanno un ruolo centrale in queste celebrazioni, sono spesso ignorati nelle immagini che le rappresentano.
