Lights up. I tape a smile on with duct tape and habit, energy drink in the other hand.
My threadbare top, striped pants, and boots know every backstage splinter.
A capuchin filches my pen and files a complaint in squeaks; I let it win.
The gorilla sighs like a slow drum; I answer with a sandwich and a shrug.
The tiger pads by, punctual and unimpressed; I call him Alarm and mean it.
A lion yawns like a broken foghorn; tiger cubs use my laces as a playground.
The elephant hums domestic thunder; I time my naps to its breathing and lose.
A panda, wide awake and conspiring, taps my knee for attention like a furry metronome.
I juggle buckets, schedules, and the occasional hat that belongs to no one.
Between acts I nap standing, chin on hay, one ear on the big-top gossip.
Curtain call: a roar that smells of sawdust and trust; I bow, ridiculous and awake.
I leave a trail of half-eaten crackers and good intentions and go home to count breaths, not sheep.

This is a super close-up portrait of a Ruddy Turnstone sandpiper. He appears to still have much of his breeding coloration, so I am assuming he only recently arrived from the breeding grounds in the arctic. I took this shot on the Barnegat Jetty, where there was a group of about eight Turnstones lazily hanging out on the rocks. These birds will likely stay around all winter, as I have seen them there in January and February. Gotta love the clown-like coloration facial coloration on these shorebirds. Clown Duck - How low is low enough? The new articulating screens on the new cameras are actually surprisingly handy to get eye level with the water without ruining my neck/back/shoulders as I used to do several years ago.
