Some of the movements of birds in flight look increasingly dramatic to me. I view the RAW shots of this hawk and imagine Beethoven's frustration and anger as he lost his hearing and hear his strong Fifth and Ninth Symphonies in my head—something I couldn't see, hear, or express when looking with binoculars.

I feel so grateful for camera gear now.

Perhaps these birds express fierce frustration at and inconsolable sadness with human slowness to respond to their climate and habitats and trees.

I'm reworking this piece using coal we usually use in our garden (for our orchids) to join an art competition with a "Climate Change" theme- I know I'm never gonna win but, for me, it's not about the prize...it's about the cause ;)

We are just one among millions of species sharing a single planet oasis, with limited resources, in the vast desert of space. We don't get a second chance at this - once tipping points are breached there will be no way for us to return to the world that we know and depend upon. We are already consuming more than our world can provide and we have to change the way we live to save a liveable future for our children. We must stop destroying our home - now.

Every day is #EarthDay

Yesterday peaceful French climate activists and school strikers were sprayed with teargas.

The same day, it was 45,9° in France in JUNE. It shattered the old record of 44,1° (which was set in August 2003).

This is not “the new normal”.

This is only the beginning of #ClimateBreakdown and #ClimateEmergency .

Captured in April 2019. The children are our future and we have let them down, all of us. Be the change that matters - every little step makes a difference.

Mendenhall Glacier face with lake reflection, February 2025; Juneau, Alaska.

I integrated charcoal & graphite on this piece. Charcoal powder is diluted for the background. The eye is selectively colored in red color pencil to portray some sort of "possession" so as to add more mystery to it's overall composition.

Parts of the feathers are drawn in coal we usually use in our garden (for our orchids) to add more depth. Coal has long been the primary power source in my home country (the Philippines), and large-scale power plants act as a safety crutch in the country’s quest for energy security. But the advent of cost-efficient renewable energy technologies is challenging coal’s dominance as the go-to energy source. Climate change is coal’s most serious, long-term, global impact. Chemically, coal is mostly carbon, which, when burned, reacts with oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas. When released into the atmosphere, carbon dioxide works like a blanket, warming the earth above normal limits.

Nae taps required. To play on words in both English and Scots.

It's going to be another hot one today in the UK. Europe, however, is seeing record temperatures day after day and terrifying wildfires are threatening life. The new normal. This will most likely be the coolest year of the rest of your life. We did this. We are still doing it. Very little is being done to prevent catastrophic climate change.

In the meantime, if you are caught in the heat, seek shade and stay hydrated. Please keep an eye on those that are more vulnerable to heat.

Just a tiny part of a huge Climate Strike march in Glasgow, Scotland, in September 2019.

Today thousands of children are marching through Glasgow once again. Our one earth is their one chance of a future - we must stop destroying it for them. We owe our children a world in which they can live and thrive.

While I can't be there in person today with my camera, I am there in spirit. We are one species surviving on one oasis of life in the vastness of space. We cannot survive on an earth that we destroy.

Taken in in July 2019 when an Extinction Rebellion protest closed roads in a few major cities including here, at Tollbooth Steeple in Glasgow. Irrespective of your opinions of the actions of the Extinction Rebellion group, their motives should be a rallying cry for us all. We are living through a mass extinction era that is almost entirely man-made and we still have the power to stop the worst of it from coming to pass - if we act now! *

We share one world, one tiny planet in the vastness of space, where each ecosystem is delicately balanced with the next. The more we screw up the greater the knock-on effects will be. Every day is Earth Day.

#EarthDay #ClimateEmergency #ExtinctionRebellion

* I am not a member of Extinction Rebellion and I do not condone unlawful protest, I am just a photographer documenting life in the city. I do, however, see and understand the irrefutable science behind our climate emergency.

After trying to convince Alaska’s Murkowski (R) and a few other senators, I will focus on trees. This is special 3-way soil just delivered for the next trees to arrive, along with backhoe and strong arborists and planters. This soil, unlike garden soil, has less chance of mushrooms sprouting, and apparently that's important.

From their website:

“... rich, black soil—it’s fertile, virtually weed-free and stays loose and drainable. Our 3-way topsoil mix includes our signature compost that allows the soil product to retain moisture without turning to mud. It has a balanced pH and therefore, does not need lime. You won’t find any clay-based soil in our mixture.”

The native red cedars and maples to arrive Wednesday should be even larger than those we had planted in 2016 and 2018--those trees have withstood wind gusts and the wetland season with impromptu ponds and streams. I'm so excited!

An electrically powered personal vehicle is the future of transport when most journeys in cars right now are made with just one single occupant. Sadly these personal electric vehicles are illegal on the road and illegal on the footpath in the UK. They can only legally be used on private land at the moment. Such a shame. An electric scooter would make a massive difference to my mobility!

I'll not have any comments here about these things being dangerous and a menace to society. Any vehicle used irresponsibly is a menace and a danger and, frankly, the amount of kinetic energy behind a car is so many times greater that the argument is mute. We have been programmed for decades into a 'car culture' existence and it is completely unsustainable with finite resources, a growing population and limited space.

We all know that electric is the future right now, be it battery or hydrogen fuel cell, but we also need to think smaller and more efficient too. Embrace change rather than resist it because of a precious petrol powered car. Oh, and before you argue against me, I was a petrolhead and highly qualified driver. I love cars but I love our earth more.

It's 'Transport Day' at #COP26 in Glasgow.

Enjoy!

Why do we need bees?

Bees are essential to a healthy environment and healthy economy. We rely on them and other insects to pollinate most of our fruit and vegetables. But bees are under threat and without them so is our food and economy. You can make your garden, street and community bee-friendly. It's also vital that we persuade the government to take action. Join the generation that saves bees. #friendsoftheearth

Captured in August 2019, a Friday School Strike action inspired by Greta Thunberg echoing her famous "Our house is on fire..." speech.

We have seen California burn.

We have seen Australia burn.

We have perhaps not cared to look when Siberia was burning!

Currently Europe is burning and today...

Today London is burning.

Not just empty fields but houses, homes, precious items and memories.

We need complete system change. Tipping points have been breached already - I fear that some feedback loops have started already too. We are so far away from the 1.5 degree warming target that was proposed some years ago now - we're looking at 2 degrees and more.

I read a disturbing scientific report a few days ago that had clearly modelled that continuing as we are we would face 50% of species extinction on earth by 2050.

We can't afford to wait for politics and industry to take action - we need to take action individually - they will follow, there will be no choice.

We can't undo the damage already baked in for a long time ahead but we can limit how far we push the world to the apocalypse.

There is a way back but it will be hard and painful. We will have to see 2019 as peak hedonistic humanity. We need to work together and we need to realise that our very survival depends upon it.

Stay safe and stay hydrated my Flickr friends.

Captured at the September 2019 'Strike for Climate' march in Glasgow, Scotland. Thousands upon thousands gathered in George Square calling for urgent action to prevent irreversible climate disaster.

On the eve of #COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, this image feels as poignant as ever so I gave it a re-edit with a little bit of 'Photoshoppery' to remove a clipped sign from the edge of frame.

I wish that the pandemic was under better control in the UK and that it would be safer for me to be in the city to document the occasion - it is heart-breaking for me that I cannot be there. I do, however, have some suitable images for the event captured over the past few years.

I can but hope that "fine words turn into even finer actions" from the world leaders. I can, however, make personal changes that, if most of us took on board, would make a massive difference too. A lot of those changes I have already made.

COP26 is the last chance to keep the goal of 1.5C of temperature rise, above pre-industrial levels, alive. Every percentage of a degree matters. When it comes to temperature - small numbers make massive differences.

We are one species sharing one tiny blue oasis in the vastness of space. Earth is our home and we cannot live without her.

Stay safe.

A tiny section of the enormous Ineos PetroChina oil refinery at Grangemouth, Scotland.

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) gets underway in Glasgow from 31st October 2021. Described as our last chance to save the world from an irreversible climate catastrophe.

With over 30,000 people attending including former US President Obama, an a street march by thousands lead by Greta Thunberg, and many, many demonstrations and strike action in the city - it will be a lively period and with absolute surety, a Covid19 Super-spreader event.

I'm absolutely broken that I can't be there with my camera documenting the occasion amongst the everyday people of the city. I'm just weeks away from being due for a booster shot so my immunity is now at it's weakest while cases are soaring.

Personally I think we are closer to 'running out of time' than we fear. Several tipping-point events have already occurred in the past couple of years and some feedback loops are starting to get going. It is going to be a rocky road ahead.

I cannot see how our whole economy is viable. We are consuming many times more than our earth can provide and corporations and governments are looking for year upon year growth and expansion. We are over-resourcing our finite resource already. Truly drastic change to society, culture, attitude and our way of life is needed and I don't see that it will, or can, happen. Too many attitudes of selfishness and entitlement abound when we can only succeed if we work together to look out for each other.

I come back to a statement I have made many times here on Flickr with my photographs.

We are one single species on one solitary earthly oasis in the vastness of space.

Our earth can thrive without us but we cannot thrive without our earth. It is long overdue that we stopped choking the life out of our home in the universe. Time that we stopped raping our earth of resources. Time that we just stopped, looked and cared for our world... our home... our life.

Be safe.

Defying the odds.

Our road into town, all those favourite bends and special places... some unrecognisable.

Compare this panorama with the one I took from the Gornergratt only 10 years ago. The loss of ice across the area is distressing and alarming.

At an image level in just a decade, both better cameras and better processing software have led to vast improvements in the quality of panoramas. This is multiple images seamlessly merged in Photoshop. The original TIFF exceeded the maximum size 4gb. I reduced the size!

I had a nigh on 6 hour return drive today to Cooma to find a doctor and an X-ray machine for my youngest's wrist after she fell off her bike yesterday... The trip wasn't for nothing (it was broken, poor wee lamb), and we came home in this afternoon with enough time to stop for some photos along the way.

It was a heart wrenching drive. The Monaro would never be described as easy country, but the devastation the prolonged drought is wreaking now truly stills the heart.
