getting back to the garden (again ;-)
Another favourite photograph taken by a visiting friend, a wonderful photographer, in winter 2018, and processed by me this week.
The image posted below in the first comment box is also from the series of images taken by my friend during winter 2018.
Sorry about the previous confusing intro!!! :-( Tho I wish I could perform the magic editing imagined... it's beyond me.
Last winter (2019) there was an abundance of wild food and it was also a very mild winter.. so no birds needed feeding here. This year there is real winter... and to my amazement, after 20 months away, the silvereyes returned.. and remembered me. Well... they remembered peanut butter ;-) On their first day back some even nibbled it from my fingers. Now they come to meet me. The brave ones land on my hand to eat, the clever ones find the peanut butter jar in my other hand :-) On the first day one jumped repeatedly on my head but not at all since. Another landed on my lens barrel, looked me straight in the eye, and told me to get on to more important things :-)

Captured this golden-hour shot of some new crop circles near the historic Alfred’s Castle in Wiltshire. The way the low sun hits the fields makes the contrast pop against the ancient earthworks.
Alfred’s Castle itself is a fascinating spot. Despite the name—which is actually an 18th-century attempt to romanticise the site—it’s not a medieval castle. It’s actually a small, hexagonal Iron Age enclosed settlement, likely built around 400–360 BC. It served as a defended farmstead and even saw later Roman occupation, with stone footings of a villa found inside the ramparts. It’s definitely a bit of a time-travel experience to stand near these ancient banks.
Then, there’s the crop circles that appeared 2 days ago. Crop circles have been a massive part of the Wiltshire landscape’s "mystery" since the phenomenon really took off in the late 1970s and 80s. While they were famously linked to UFOs and otherworldly theories back in the day, most(!) of these elaborate geometric designs are created by humans using simple tools like ropes and boards.
Whether you think they’re just clever art or have a bit of that old-school mystical vibe, there’s no denying how cool they look from the air. Seeing modern geometric designs right next to an Iron Age fort definitely makes for a surreal contrast in my opinion

Early in the morning the great spotted woodpecker woke me up with a loud tok tok tok. He sat in a cherry tree right in front of my house and hammered constantly. Later I could see that he had very cleverly pinched a hazelnut in order to crack it. You can still see the nut pieces on the beak...
Tôt le matin, le pic épeiche m'a réveillé avec un fort tok tok tok. Il était assis dans un cerisier juste en face de chez moi et martelait constamment. Plus tard, j'ai pu constater qu'il avait très astucieusement pincé une noisette pour la casser. On peut encore voir les morceaux de noix sur le bec...

Clever little creatures, these great spotted woodpeckers: They wedge the walnut into a crack in the tree and can crack it open effortlessly.
Pad's has quite canny fur in that it shapes to points in rain and water just runs off without penetrating .. a quick shake and he's nearly dry ... useful in a tent in that you get a soggy damp dog rather than a soaking wet one:)
One of the first things I saw when I walked into the garden centre. A well crafted sunflower by a clever craftsperson.
The walking path is lit by these solar powered lights. As you can see here they are attractive to both birds and little bugs.
