Iris florentina is the white flowered variant of Iris germanica now classified as Iris germanica nothovar. florentina. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions almost worldwide. Iris florentina is a rhizomatous perennial from southern Europe, mainly Italy (including the city of Florence) and France. It has a thick violet-scented rhizome, sword-like green or grey-green semi-evergreen leaves, a tall branched stem, and many flowers that are white and tinged or flushed with blue, pale blue, or lavender in spring or summer, and a white and yellow beard. It is also grown to produce orris-root, a scented substance used in perfumes, soaps, tooth cleanser, and clothes washing powder. Medicinally it was used as an expectorant and decongestant. It is made from the rhizomes of Iris florentina, Iris germanica and Iris pallida. (wiki)

Salt water is good for everything except drinking. Pretty sure that's completely true....maybe? :-) Doesn't matter....whatever excuse to get me to the ocean works for me!

Hope you all have a soul cleansing Friday. Can we all agree that beer might be a good soul cleanser as well???

Just a little palate cleanser in between photos of chamois :-)

A little palate cleanser between photos of chamois... I wish they would pose nicely in this photogenic part of their forest, but they seem to prefer underbrush, brambles and woodpiles.

...and on the surface.

It's Comet Cleanser. I actually took this shot for last Macro Mondays "Soap" theme. The can top diameter is just under 3 inches, so it fits within the size limit. But I wasn't sure that the group's arbiters would accept it as "soap," so I went with something else. I kinda like this image, though, so here it is.

Here's a little snapshot of Heidi... a sort of palate cleanser in between the orchids and beach photos LOL. We'll both be glad when the hot temperatures will drop. It was far too warm today. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Some bright morning when this life is over

I'll fly away

To that home on God's celestial shore

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away in the morning

When I die hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone

I'll fly away

Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly

I'll fly away

I'll (fly away) fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away in the morning

When I die hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

Oh, how glad and happy when we meet

I'll fly away

No more cold iron shackles on my feet

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away in the morning

When I die hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away in the morning

When I die hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then

I'll fly away

To a land where joys will never end

I'll fly away

I'll (fly away) fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away in the morning

When I die hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

I'll fly away

OK. Now that we all seem to have survived the Orson Wells type Halloween attack of the giant alien brains, where were we? Hmmm? You know, before we get back to my slide show of “past vacation shots never posted,” how about a little pallet-cleanser? Let me offer you this little sorbet of bleeding heart and dandelion water drops.

A close up of a loofah

Since my lifer shots this week are not of a quality I'm proud of, I thought I'd post a "palette cleanser" - something that hopefully shows the grace and beauty of a bird rather than just a species documentation shot. Great egret coming in for a landing on Pond 2 of the Gilbert Riparian Preserve

Our view from the top of the mountain at sunset.

The previous weekend these prairie grasses swayed and glistened in a cool wind, I imagined the ground announcing a change was coming in a few days and winter would bring a blanket of snow for a lengthy six months. Snow fell on Tuesday and now the Southern Alberta landscape is cold and brilliant white. I had discovered this area a couple weekends ago, while looking at the old house a rustling noise along the small pond revealed a white tail buck bolting behind me, leaving me startled. I turned and grabbed a sudden shot with the deer in mid air. On the hillside a truck was stealth parked, this is hunting season! I suggested to Dancer to maybe consider a new flight path.

English Electric Class 50 No. 50046 'Ajax' restarts 'The Night Riviera' Sleeper from its penultimate set down point at Hayle on 16th June 1981, with just St Erth to follow before arrival into Penzance after its overnight journey from London Paddington. The locomotive is named after the Royal Navy's 'Leander - Class light cruiser HMS Ajax, which had a distinguished record of action during the Second World War, most notably its involvement in the Battle of the River Plate which resulted in the German Deutschland-class Panzerschiff, nicknamed by the British as 'Pocket-battleships', 'Admiral Graf Spee' being scuttled. However, the younger generation of enthusiasts at the time christened 50046 'The Foaming Cleaner' after a tv advert for a cleaning product called 'Ajax'. Such is life! My daily palette cleanser - a shot from last year I've not yet posted.

From the top of the Eiffel Tower. A photograph taken thousands of times a day, every day, but still... you've got to do it.

I wasn't done shooting last August 10, but it was on to "real" trains away from the museum. I figured this segue could be a good time for a brief break in the chronology. In that vein, here is a jump of 6 months and 20 years.

There is some history happening in this scene on the west side of Wausau, WI. The pair of wig-wag signals protecting Garfield Ave hint at the C&NW history of this track. Indeed it was once a mainline continuing west from Wausau to Marshfield and ultimately the Merrillan connection to the Twin Cities-Chicago mainline. In an era when C&NW pruned many of its secondary lines across Wisconsin, the line through Marshfield was abandoned. The remnant to the west side of Wausau was kept to serve both small customers and a significant shipper, the 3M roofing granules plant.

After the long C&NW tenure, UP operated this island of track left at Wausau for a couple years. The logical move was to sell this track to Wisconsin Central and that's what happened. WC ran here until CN purchased them. The CN era brought a wider mix of locomotives and we see evidence of that here. 18 years later, CN would spin off this track to Watco's Fox Valley & Lake Superior. Business has remained steady the whole time and FOXY keeps these west side rails active.

The IC GP40 is the only thing looking a little out of place in this center of central Wisconsin scene. There is a fresh blanket of snow, a towering white pine, the signals looking at home with either a 400 or a peddler freight passing by, and a venerable pickup truck, its years of hard service in evidence with a homemade wood box to replace the original no doubt destroyed by road salt. Much of the smaller 4 axle power used by WC didn't last long after the CN takeover. In it's place, plenty of IC and GTW Geeps came to Wisconsin to work the local jobs. Southeastern Wisconsin still has a lot of them working the yards and industries. 3106 in particular would labor on in IC black for another 10 years before getting a fresh coat of CN colors while keeping its IC designation and number. I have a fair number of Autumn pictures this year filled with orange, yellow, green and red so I'm inserting an overexposed picture of Jimmy to help reset your eyes to neutral before continuing with more traditional fall pictures.

I don't think any collection of desserts will ever top what we had at Pierre Gagnaire 2 years ago, but the desserts we had at GR were delicious and fun and a satisfying end to a memorable meal.

Above dish: Pineapple soup with toasted coconut and rum to cleanse the palate. I've always found the term "palate cleanser" funny and pretentious, but that's what they're called at these types of restaurants. Fruity, frothy, perfect sweet-tartness. Yes, those are glass straws!
